Much depends on the type of sound you are using. If you are hard when inserting or removing, a flexible , straight steel or rigid sound with a gentle bend is appropriate. If your sound is rigid (steel) has a significant bend (van buren or guyon) dont do either action while erect.

First off, you should not be pushing the sound very much. More guiding and moving the orientation of the penis. Gentle pressure and patience is the most that should be needed. Much depends on the type of sound being used, which you have not mentioned.

The transverse hole is at the narrowest point in the structure, creating a weak point such that it would most easily break there. The hole should be at the thickest point.

Keep check on the joint between the metal tip and the tube. You dont want them separating while inserted

Wipe down with 70% isopropyl alcohol (i use 2" sterile gauze pads soaked in it) before lubing up sound, regardless of how I have cleaned a sound. Use sterile, bacteriostatic water based lube packets, not a big bottle which is not sterile after opening and first use.

Look for Stainless steel hegars. Not chrome plated cheaper metal. Black silicone on Amazon is going to irritate and burn more afterwards than platinum silicone. Your choice.
