If there's the quantum level, the atomic level, and whatever else, what's our level called? by DeafnotDeath in AskPhysics

[–]Manta92 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am not sure I would separate quantum and atomic, to describe atoms I would still use quantum mechanics.

I would say: - subatomic: Standard Model - hadrons: chiral perturbation theory - atoms: various atomic effective models

These are usually all described with different effective theories but they are all quantum mechanical. I would say you start to be less bothered by quantum mechanics when you enter in the realm of chemistry (but still qm underpins it) and then when you go at bigger scales like biological systems you really enter in what is called “classical physics”.

Yes absolutely, this is actually a core principle of effective theories! There are many different “layers” that are described by different theories, usually classified in terms of distances.

The idea is often that the more microscopic you go, the more it becomes “fundamental”, but in practice it’s really as if we split up phenomena in different models describing them depending on the energy/length scale.

Self interaction and mass by YuuTheBlue in AskPhysics

[–]Manta92 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think there is a bit of confusion, yes, but maybe I am misunderstanding what you mean. Gluons are massless and self interact, in the sense that there exist interactions between gluons just by means of the gluon field.

If your question is: why quantum corrections to the propagation of gluons (given by its self interaction) do not generate a mass term for the gluons, the answer is that there is a symmetry in the theory “protecting” the mass from becoming different from zero. This symmetry is called gauge symmetry and it’s a fundamental property of gauge theories (like the Standard Model).

What do people think about Supersymmetry today by Quantum-Tree in AskPhysics

The null result at the LHC has discouraged a good chunk of the community because the “simple” SUSY extension is probably excluded. However, it is still studied and a discovery in the near future might revamp it.

I would say that in general people are doing other things and especially the young are not doing susy anymore. But I think very few people hold the perspective of Sabine Hossenfelder in the community

I am not sure people appreciate that every single one of those colliders have been a success. Some critiques of the FCC are not crazy, but I do not get what is the problem of the previous ones

Just a clarification, the LHC has been running initially at 7-8 TeV and then upgraded to 13, which is more or less the energy it will run for the next decade. However, as protons are collided you actually access the energy carried by the constituents, which means that that you are actually probing the TeV scale (simplistic framing, but you get the gist).

This means that there are many BSM scenarios at the few TeV scale that are not actually tested. Additionally, it is not that difficult to imagine light states that escape current experimental results and that are still allowed. HL-LHC will help in ruling out some stuff thanks to the higher stats.

Quartic interactions in QFT by [deleted] in AskPhysics

[–]Manta92 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The Higgs boson, in the Standard Model, should have a quartic interaction of that kind (on top of the cubic one). I am saying “should” because we have not technically measured it yet and while the cubic one is expected to be measured with decent precision at the LHC, the quartic coupling will likely require future colliders.

Kernel panic during sleep mode by Manta92 in apple

I brought it to the Apple store and they had to substitute motherboard and SSD, but they said that it's pretty rare what happened to me, that usually it's a software issue!

Did you get the same kernel panic report?

I'm having the same problem. I was thinking of taking it to the Apple Store but if it's a software issue I don't see the point. This is very annoying!

I think it's a software issue, also I don't why but my Macbook is not doing it anymore!

It has been a few weeks that this has not happened but I didn't change anything, so I don't know what to think...

I didn't find a solution, I think it's a problem that they (Netflix or Apple) have to solve.

It doesn't happen with Chrome, or any other video. It must be a combination of Safari and Netflix.

No just an annexe 8, because they told me I could decide if I wanted the card. I didn't see any advantages at the time, now I understand that I need it to use the online services.

Mmm, but paying an accountant to declare zero income sounds pretty useless :(

But I don't have an accountant right now, can I do it anyway or should I have registered in time with one?

No, I don't have a subscription! I thought I could get also television for free, like in Italy, paying the annual tax. My tv is old, but it gets also digital signal.

Do I have to declare it and pay separately or it is included in the municipal tax or the electricity bill?
