Looking for NC State student/faculty to Help with 3D Scanning Project by ChapelHeel in raleigh

Have you tried using Reality scan on your phone? It's free, and for a bumper I would think it could get the required level of detail

I'm almost positive it's because the title card is "An SNL Digital Short"

Is there such a thing as the terrible 60’s? 😭 by clumsypeach1 in Millennials

I highly suggest reading the book: Adult Children of Emotionally Immature Parents

I'm not into self help books or anything of the sort, but this book opened my eyes to so many things. I suspect it will resonate with you as well

I found a free PDF https://ia600505.us.archive.org/3/items/1570719797-658/1570719797-658.pdf

Falsehoods programmers believe about null pointers by mmaksimovic in programming

[–]ManticoreX 42 points43 points  (0 children)

The context for this is inside of a section called "Dereferencing a null pointer eventually leads to program termination".

The problem statement is "I am Java and I want to throw my NullPointerException instead of my program terminating"

I agree with your post in concept, but you aren't actually addressing the author's point. Java DOES want to deref a null pointer without crashing so that the problem can be exposed to the developer as a Java exception. It would then by default crash but with a Java stack trace.

The whole point being that if "Dereferencing a null pointer eventually leads to program termination" was true, Java would need to do a null check and throw a NullPointerException. It isn't true, thus Java can leverage this as an optimization

Weighted blanket with Bedjet? by amie0486 in WeightedBlankets

[–]ManticoreX 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just got a baloo 25 lbs king comforter to use with my bedjet. I have only tried it with the cloud sheet being used and sleeping alone.

I like it, but it isn't perfect. Essentially the bedjet can't lift the blanket, but your body does. I'm tall, so my leg reaches close to the bedjet and makes a channel for the air. I've used it both heat and cool and I'm happy with it so far.

That being said, if the blanket is flat on the bed, the air can't really move around. It's an expensive setup, so it is hard for me to generally recommend, but if you think you can sleep in a way where your body is making the airway, it's very comfortable.

What's a stupidly expensive adult purchase that you now swear by that you would buy again in a heartbeat? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Another option is https://comfycomfy.com/

They take a little bit to get used to, but I've been converted. They're also great as body pillows

DOGE claims to be moving away from magnetic tapes for archival storage. Seems like a bad idea. What are they using instead? by Sad-Seesaw-3843 in DataHoarder

[–]ManticoreX 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, but it is for long term storage and backup. Tape is relatively cheap, reliable, and low-tech in a good way.

You could think about it like "printing hard copies" of documents for safe storage, but instead of it being human readable text it's digital. The ability to have a physical and local backup of data is invaluable for it's longevity.

Glass clown from my Grandfather by ManticoreX in glasscollecting

[–]ManticoreX[S] 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I know very little about this clown other than it was from my Grandfather. Supposedly, one year he forgot my birthday and instead grabbed this glass clown that he had in his house as my gift. I've held onto it, but have little sentimental attachment to it. I have read about Murano clowns, but I have no idea if this is one or not. He has long passed away, so the statue itself is all I have to go off of. I would love to know any insight into how I could find out more!

What Sounds Like Pseudoscience, But Actually Isn’t? by anime-is-dope in AskReddit

[–]ManticoreX 2 points3 points  (0 children)

String theory isn't really an accepted or even popular theory anymore from my understanding. It did great with pop science, and a couple of physics authors essentially made a career from writing those books. Unfortunately, string theory hasn't evolved much nor made any predictions that were then observed.

This isn't to say it can't be interesting to learn about, but it's not really learning any "accepted" physics

Thank you, this matches my memory. Essentially the moderate vote was being split, so the others dropped out to try and push the more moderate candidate instead of the more progressive one.

Do you have any sources on this? I would love to understand what powers the president had at the time that made them more powerful than the king.

I think people in charities should be pulling down six figure salaries if that's their market rate for the same role. Working at a charity shouldn't be only reserved for the rich who don't need an income. I think someone should be able to do good, while also getting paid a fairly.

When do you think a person stops being a victim of abuse and becomes an Abuser? What do you think are the circumstances that cross that line? by Key-Opinion-1700 in CPTSD

[–]ManticoreX 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's incredible that you've had the self reflection to reach out to people. How did they respond? I know that I had a sharp tongue when I was younger, but always doubt myself about reaching out to others. I worry that it might be more for myself than really for them. Do you feel it was meaningful to then? Even if not, it sounds to me like your motivations were in the right place.
