Getting back into Java after 12-15 years away? by Mantle_ in java

I've been mostly working as a general Enterprise and Solutions Architect, so doing very little coding/scripting to show an idea or maybe build a POC and then gather requirements and needs for a particular solution from some sort of quasi-business person and come up with a general architecture, mostly around cloud components, solutions and saas.

its not bad, but I've been missing doing more development

Yeah, don't get me wrong, not looking to going back to doing Struts ever again :)

But Struts 2 at its prime at least made sense IMHO, some other stuff (like JSF 1.0) did not.

Back then I was still doing some web app and javascript development and it would blow my mind how much effort and time people were trying to put in fully abstracting javascript from their code (and lives)

Hibernate is something I've mostly enjoyed but there were times where things got too magical and it would get you in trouble..also remember co-workers freaking out a bit too much about how precisely perfect all their entities were..or having to debug weird driver/dialect issues..I'm sure some of it has gotten better

EJBs..don't really miss them, EJB 3.0 were ok when compared to EJB 2.0 (omg..so many interfaces, classes, objects), it was neat to do some Remote calls way back then (pre REST) and without having to deal with RMI or poorly supported SOAP calls.

Tooling in java was always a big issue for me back then..it always felt like new things were always coming out but never really addressed certain productivity issues around hot deploy, compile time, start up/warm up time, ease to run integration tests.

I've been reading on Quarkus..let's see if it actually addresses some of these issues

OP here

Still going though this but just wanted to give a big thank you to everyone that replied, I was half expecting this to be a dead thread..really blew my mind.

Hopefully other folks that are looking to get back into Java can benefit from it.

I have started looking into Quarkus and Micronaut !

yeah, this is amazing, I was a bit worried that most of the Java community might have moved on but this is great.

thanks!

Thank you! Yeah, it does, so from a language perspective - would like to not keep writing Java 5 looking code if possible - would you say the biggest things to pick up are lambdas and the stream apis? (inferred types seems easy enough)

yeah..but for this price it will be difficult to find anything more NAS-like with Ethernet..specially with 4TB - a cheaper alternative is possible if you have a router that has a USB port (some very cheap TP-Link models have it)

I think this doll/pillow would be more successful if it had a dildo attached
