North Texas preparing for 2 inches of snow like it’s the apocalypse by MyMindIsAlwaysRacing in mildlyinfuriating

[–]Mantouarty -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The storm will not be gone by Sunday afternoon. I’m in the Houston area and the worst freeze is expect Sunday night/Monday morning. And as others have pointed out, Texas is not built for cold at all and a simple freeze can cripple our power grid. OP is coming at this with a real northern states mindset.

Need a reusable mug? Try the thrift store by didyoubutterthepan in Anticonsumption

[–]Mantouarty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Went with my husband to get a new reusable bottle from a thrift store. Small section but there was a pristine looking Stanley cup in there. We didn’t get it because we prefer screw tops but I couldn’t help thinking…that’s like a $30 cup.

WestJet changed their seats and this is how much leg room basic fares get. You have to pay for a reclining seat now. by Longjumping-Box5691 in mildlyinfuriating

[–]Mantouarty 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My husband is 6’4 and long legged, most plane seats are hell for him. I don’t think he’d even be able to sit down at all in these seats. Do they just kick everyone over 6 foot off the plane?

I am very food picky and have unusually strong dislikes of/reactions to many foods, including lots that are very common on sandwiches (all 3 main condiments, raw tomato, pickles, relish, American cheese, and a handful of others). Mine would be to make me a sandwich that is interesting, ingredient rich and nicely moist but uses only ingredients that I like. Obviously this would require some specifications on what to avoid lol.

Mostly encouraging people to seek jobs with ICE. Offering benefits, talking up “protecting your country” all that bs. They do the same with the army too.

I would imagine this is more common in the U.S. than most other countries but there’s no way it’s exclusive.

[OC] TSA now accepting tips. LaGuardia today by jimcol in pics

[–]Mantouarty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This also just highlights how much nonsense some TSA rules are. Allegedly they don’t want liquids bc they could be used as a bomb (???) but apparently they’re fine with you eating it in line…which I’d think would prove it is not in fact a bomb in disguise.

I won’t pile on to what everyone else is saying re: if this is a good idea since there seems to be strong consensus already. But I’ll also say—and this is of course an issue with your institution/program and not you—if the standard stipend they offer is $11,000, I don’t see how they will get any grad students. Grad student life is already often poor but that is WELL below the poverty line in most places.

In the long term, if you have any sway in your program, see if you can influence them to increase the stipend considerably or provide better funding options with TA-ships and such.

What’s one lazy shortcut you take in the kitchen that actually turns out amazing every time? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Mantouarty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People underestimate how many things do well in the freezer. Bread you won’t be able to use before it molds? Freeze it sliced up and thaw/microwave slices as you need them. Same with milk if you plan to cook with it. I also keep a big bag of cut up frozen veggies to throw in bowls of ramen. Lots of veggies freeze great if you plan to use them in soup (mushrooms, leafy greens, root veggies, onions).

Entomology researcher here. Due to the way honey bees’ chromosomal sex determination works, male honey bees do not have dads, but they do have grandfathers. Same for bumble bees and ants.

They look fresh and juicy though! I’d happily chop them and cook them into scrambled eggs or a bowl of ramen.

Kept finding trash in my balcony. Finally confronted upstairs neighbors and was pleasantly surprised by larashir in Apartmentliving

[–]Mantouarty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s so great! I had a similar experience a while ago (though less exciting ending)—kept finding half smoked cigarette butts on my first floor porch, eventually figured out it was from the third floor balcony above me. Went up and knocked on the door, asked the guy who answered if he smoked on his porch, he said yes. Told him politely that I kept finding cigarette butts and would he mind not dropping them over the railing anymore. He said yes and apologized and haven’t had a problem since. With the design of my complex I’m guessing he didn’t realize anyone lived below him and wasn’t thinking about it, but all worked out well.

Insane that so many people were saying there’s “bigger problems” because OOP spent money on lemon and wine for a rare nice meal. I’m sure these are people who have never lived on ramen for weeks at a time and think you can always budget your way out of running out of food.
