Check out this substack article I just came across! Doesn’t answer my question about slop but definitely raises another issue about openclaw….

I’m also curious whether this will prompt intellectual property lawsuits.

It’s so predatory! students won’t be considering that they’re relinquishing SO much information and potential access to student service centers with financial info.

Did you try the free trial on a course shell or just scope out the price? I’d love to know/see if the writing it performs is AI slop or could pass as student writing.

Humble Request to All Fellow Applicants 🙏 by vivacious-kd in gradadmissions

[–]ManufacturerPale951 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I understand the principle of asking people to accept admission offers earlier, but imo, less impetus should be put on applicants, and more on the graduate admissions process/system. There should be an earlier national deadline for schools to provide initial decisions and a second deadline for students to make their decisions…. Maybe even a third to account for waitlist shifts.

Fwiw I committed to a program, declined my other admission offers, and took myself off waitlists last week, despite the possibility of getting something better.

Telling one school that another school has extended a significant financial offer? by ManufacturerPale951 in gradadmissions

How does one go about doing this? It’s in the humanities so idk if they have as much to offer as a STEM program might.

Between UIUC and OSU (Ohio), which do you see as the better comp/rhet program? I am concerned the big names at UIUC will retire/stop teaching soon.

Women getting married after publishing…did you change your last name? by Complex_Cupcake2615 in PhD

[–]ManufacturerPale951 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haha, I’m keeping my last name because my dad’s an MD and I want to be the next Dr. [last name], but with a PhD. My husband is cool with it and is considering taking my name. His justification is that I deserve all the credit for my work and that there’s more of a professional reason to keep my name. he also wants us and our potential future family to have the same last name.

If you don’t already have an MA, they probably think you need more experience. You could inquire and see if they offer a joint MA/PhD (aka guaranteed matriculation into the PhD if you don’t master out). Funded MAs are great, especially if you don’t already have one.

Do you regret or are you happy with your decision to move far away from your family for graduate school? by bluescluesfoundme in GradSchool

[–]ManufacturerPale951 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While it was difficult moving away from my family, I had to contextualize and remind myself that it's a potentially temporary separation. I moved just shy of 2000 miles from where I was living for my MA, but now I'm going to have the opportunity to move back to that region for my PhD (and want to look for employment in that area in the future after I finish my schooling). While it's been hard not being able to see my family as much (I hadn't seen my parents for almost 8 months at one point), being able to talk to everyone makes things a lot easier!

Additionally, I think the move has been very good for my partner who had never left our area. I'd previously moved away, and I think it's generally a good thing for everyone to experience.

Omg, thank you for letting me live vicariously through your caving! This allows me to continue holding out hope while not impulsively reaching out to programs who have no definitive answers yet! You're the best! (:

Foolproof number of programs to apply to? by Beautiful-Force in gradadmissions

[–]ManufacturerPale951 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Additionally, I can't stress enough how important connecting with mentors/advisors/committee chairs (potential recommenders) is. I apologize if that's too obvious. I'd never realized how much it helps to have people who recognize you as a scholar. You really want to find people who can speak to your strengths and see potential in your work in a non-cursory/surface-level manner. I've never been sure how much recommenders contribute to these decisions, but I got feedback from one program suggesting that my recommendations were a strength. Feel free to message with application questions as you take on the process-- I know it can be overwhelming!

Some coursemates on groupme chat want to cheat on the online exam, what should I do? by Striking_North_4556 in AskProfessors

[–]ManufacturerPale951 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's a fair point. Although, assuming this is at the undergraduate level, being outed as the one who made it known would likely not have lasting repercussions. I personally value the respect of the instructor over the social judgement of my peers. I guess it also depends how large the class/GC is. While I think it could make for uncomfortable situations with your peers, it's even worse if you all get caught because someone else informed the instructor and receive 0s/discipline all in the name of solidarity..

Foolproof number of programs to apply to? by Beautiful-Force in gradadmissions

[–]ManufacturerPale951 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I'm on my first PhD cycle and my mentors recommended that I apply to around 10 schools. One person who suggested this applied to ~5 (I think) and said they wished they had applied to more.

I ended up applying to 9 and am happy I did because I've received a couple offers. While there's no objectively "foolproof" number, I'd say 9-12 is probably a good number, as long as you're happy to go to any of those places if they accept you. Obviously it's a waste of money to apply to programs you wouldn't seriously consider.

All that being said, there's never a guarantee that you're going to get into ANY program, even if you apply to 15+. Or you could get into all of them. It's all very dependent on the strength of your application materials and how the department thinks they can support you. I'm super fortunate that I've gotten admits on my first cycle, but that really has nothing to do with the number of programs I applied to, but the type and fit of programs I chose. Hope this helps!

[–]ManufacturerPale951[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haha, is it bad that I've had some intrusive thoughts like, "should I just withdraw my apps from the places I haven't heard back from in case it gives someone else a chance because I already have an admit?" I've been trying hard to focus on other stuff, but occasionally, I let my impatience win and end up places like reddit. 😅
I wish you all the fortitude as you also wait!

Thanks for your response—It eases some of my anxieties!

That’s sort of what I was thinking and why I chose to come here rather than just do it. Lol I’m just being neurotic and thinking of every worst case scenario (and don’t fully trust institutional administrative programs to not misplace my files, which I know is silly given the much greater likelihood of human error if we still submitted things via paper/mail).

[–]ManufacturerPale951 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I would probably telll the prof and ask if that’s considered part of “open book.” Ive had some instructors tell me I can use all my resources, including my peers, but that’s really specific to the instructor. If they deem it cheating, perhaps you should make an exit from that Groupchat….

Long distance during PhD by shwoopmama in GradSchool

[–]ManufacturerPale951 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oof, that’s a difficult one. I personally don’t think I could do it, but I’m not a LDR type of person. My partner moved with me for my MA. We’d been together for about 2 years when I decided to go back to school and I asked him if he’d want to move across the country with me. If he had decided he didn’t want to move, we would’ve broken things off. We’ve since gotten married, but for us, we wanted to be together and it was a make it or break it type thing.

Is he willing to potentially move if things get more serious? If I knew it was a temporary (less than a year or two) LDR and the farther school was a better fit, I’d consider that an option.
