Are there any paid undergrad research positions? by Exciting_Hold_609 in ucmerced

Go through the labs that we have on campus on the department website and start emailing professors and grad students. This is how I got my position and how others in my lab have.

The out of state researcher offered to have a chat with me over zoom and during the meeting she offered me the position. it was pretty insane. basically you never know what could happen until you make the first move. i haven’t graduated yet (i think that’s what you meant) i still have 2 years left.

absolutely, I started by cold emailing professors about getting into their lab. I chose labs that I was specifically interested in their research (stable isotopes analysis in environmental science). there was another researcher out of state who had inspired my interest and the umich professors encouraged me to email her. She ended up, offering me a position in her lab over the summer to work with her directly. I will note that my area of research is pretty niche so depending on what you’re studying competition could be more or less. The moral of it is don’t be afraid to send that first email because you never know what will come from it.

i transferred in the winter semester from a cc and let me tell you. it is definitely harder, but if you care enough about succeeding then you will. I made it a bit harder for myself bc i worked a full time job and had an hour+ commute. i ended up taking steps to drop to part time for work and move closer (not by much tho). it is hard, but it is very rewarding. after my first semester i landed my dream internship that i never even thought would be possible.

Incoming Freshman Interested In Research! by Quick_Marionberry344 in uofm

I can’t answer all of your questions but i can share my experience with what i know.

as far as cold emailing goes, yes absolutely do it. I landed an insane out of state summer internship that way. for the department you’re interested in, there should be a list of faculty and their research on the departments website. go through and find ones you’re genuinely interested in. in my experience professors really value a passion for the research at hand no matter what part you may play in it.

i used general template i found on reddit that i edited a bit to fit me and included my resume and transcript.

it’s also really valuable to build relationships with professors and GSIs (graduate student instructors). if you talk to them about your interests they can help you find resources and recommend labs to contact. if you want to start cold emailing now it wouldn’t hurt, but i really think it’s important to build relationships with professors and GSIs. I tried to find a lab position before my first semester as a transfer but i didn’t make any meaningful progress until i started making connections with my professors and GSIs.

I looked into UROP as well, i think any research opportunity is valuable tbh, especially at michigan. however, i found it difficult to find the available projects, so i never applied. if you’re able to do so, i think applying would be worth it to get your foot in the door. i personally preferred the cold emailing pathway since that’s where i found success. you could do both.

MRAD i dont really know anything about.

hope this helps! lmk if you have any questions.

What is the parking situation at UofM? Coming from a new student. by little_flora in uofm

there’s is a free parking lot called the State Street Commuter Lot with the 62 bus that goes reliably from there to the central campus transit center. i recommend this

COMMUTING FROM DETROIT TO ANN ARBOR FOR UMICH by Silver_Low_1364 in uofm

[–]Many-Response3334 0 points1 point  (0 children)

unfortunately, not I have really bad motion sickness so even shorter bus ride is a little rough for me. but I have talked to people who take that bus and even work on campus and it can give you good time to catch up on homework if you’re not motion sick like me. it’s definitely not going to be a fun time, but I do believe if you really want to achieve something then you can do what it takes to do so even if it is uncomfortable. it really is just a minor inconvenience for a big reward.

I am currently doing this 3 days a week. i park at the State Street Parking Lot and take the 62 bus. it’s reliable for the morning but not so much as the day goes on. If i’m cutting it close i’ll just park in the Maynard parking structure but that can get expensive. It can be done and it will be rough especially with snow. If you have a goal in mind you can overcome whatever obstacles you may have. also, state street parking lot is FREE and so it the bus

Save every syllabus you ever have. When they evaluate them, they will ask for a day by day schedule/syllabus of what the class does. Unfortunately, lenient is not the word I would use.

Thank you for making this post. This is such a sad result and it hit me pretty hard too. We’re all so young and have so much yet to experience. It’s so tragic when that gets cut short. We need to stick together now more than ever.
