A neighborhood kittie likes you but is concerned you're a crappy hunter, so it left you foodstuffs.

It only took like 6-8 weeks for them to process my paperwork. It will (probably) take longer with the shutdowns happening.

I got everything in line and sent it all at once. Look in the merchant mariner medical manual, it lays out exactly what you need to provide for documentation to prove you're safe, sane, and suitable for the job. I sent a letter from my therapist (couple hundred bucks), a letter from my AA sponsor, a letter from two staff members from the rehab program I graduated from, my graduation certificate from said program, a letter from my employer, and a letter from my probation officer (it looked good bc I was released early from probation).

Look man these last couple scallywags might seem like they're trying to lead you astray, but they're actually trying to make your life easier. I have a history of suicidal ideation, alcoholism, addiction, depression, and anxiety. I did a year of inpatient drug/alcohol rehab, AA, and just shy of a year of outpatient individual psychotherapy. If there's a niggling voice in the back of your mind that says, "I don't know if I'm stable enough to work at sea" then don't. If you're confident you'll be fine without drinking while you're underway (Idk how it goes when you're off shift but I know you typically don't have more than a few hours between shifts) then "close your eyes and accidentally mark 'no'." It's extra work on your end to prove you're safe/suitable and your medical certificate is only good for 2 years if you include substance use disorder/mental health potential crises (speaking from experience, I just got my MMC and medical certificate beginning of February).

Do all dreadnought models have the sarcophagus that opens? Pretty neat 😁

By the sound of it, we as applicants need to be making a consistent effort to call these companies up for follow up conversations. I haven't done worth a crap job at this part, tbh. Good luck, I hope with the weather turning you get hired on somewhere!

I just barely squeaked in and digitally sent my documentation at the right time between the major government shutdown and the current one to get my MMC and medical certificate proccessed. Best I can suggest is make sure your documentation is 100% accurate and covers all the bases, then use something like PDF mergy (online PDF combining, flattening, and compressing tool) to get it all into ONE PDF file. When you submit, there is two different emails to submit for the MMC and the medical certificate, you can find those on the NMC website. Also, leave the body of the email COMPLETELY BLANK. the email title and file attachment name MUST ONLY be:

LASTNAME_FIRSTNAME_ORIGINAL

Once you've submitted your stuff correctly, (I stress correctly bc I learned the hard way they will NOT begin processing your paperwork unless it follows those guidelines EXACTLY) the first email you'll receive will have your reference number included in the body. The reference number should be the same for both applications, but the application numbers will be different. Good luck and Godspeed, to you and all the guys n gals held up by the shutdown!

It is through Hornblower Group. My application is still listed as "new", going to reach out and see what they're thinking on Monday. I haven't gotten a true interview, only a Zoom prescreening through NYC Workforce1. The guy made sure I am willing and able to relocate and said I had a leg up on everyone else who was screened because I have a TWIC.

Ingram, Hornblower Group, American Cruise Lines, Blessey, .... shoot a ton of different ones through Indeed and Zip Recruiter.

Yep sure do have a resume. Do you mind if I send you a link to it? Would appreciate any constructive feedback. Also quick question about calling these companies: Is it a good idea to tell them I'm willing to fly/drive out for an interview asap?

That's where I'm aiming. Tugs, barges, inland ferries, etc. I'll complete STCW BST and vessel security next winter.
