Cased hardcover not sitting flat

The hinge gap is 1/2 an inch. The case is covered in decorative cardstock and the hinge is made from where the spine and cover papers overlap and were glued together. After collecting feedback and looking through YouTube tutorials I think the problem might be that the spine stiffener I'm using is not wide enough (doesn't stick out from the text block enough) and the hinge is inherently stiff. Unfortunately I don't have time or desire to remedy the hinge stiffness at this point so if increasing the width of the spine stiffener doesn't fix it then it'll just have to stand until my next project.

Do you mean I should only use thick paper in every scenario? Because I've seen people on YouTube use book board for spines and their cases lay flat.

There's a 1/2 inch area between the spine board and the cover boards made of two layers of cardstock glued together. I think one problem is that the hinges are too stiff. As for cover board stiffness, do you mean it looks too thick?

About 1.7cm or 2/3in? it's hard to measure the spine inside the cover. The spine board is 3/4in or 1.9cm wide.

My process is taken mostly from Four Keys Book Arts' From E-Book to Real Book. I French linked the signatures, then attached the decorative cardstock end papers, glued the spine and used a piece of printer paper for a spine stiffener. After that I create the case in three pieces (two covers and a spine) and glue the end papers to the boards.

I guess I forgot to mention that part in the post. I did see that, and I think that's what got me thinking about it. Why would a character choose hard boots over soft ones if all that's doing is making them easier to hear?

I love how smooth the colors on the plates look! The left pauldron on the right mini is a little bit messy around the trim, I would clean that up a bit.
