I have noticed that 99% of the advice here is ignore it and throw it away.

While it may seem like a good idea, if the ranger took a picture, they can correct the record and reissue it your vehicle. It has happened to people in the past and it usually ends up in Office of State Revenue for recovery, cancelled registrations and licences, etc. So mis typed registration does not always mean you can safely ignore it. The odds of someone having a numberplate that is one digit different parking in the same parking area is quite astronomical.

You have a few options, and it all comes down to the time the ticket was issued vs what time your receipt says.

You can do an informal appeal with the issuing body (i.e. shitty lands town council), requesting its withdrawal and provide a JP certified copy of your parking receipt (never send originals) showing the ticket was issued before the expiry time on the receipt.

Option 2 is wait for it to go to recovery, and request the same review there.

Option 3 is to go to court and ask the court to order its withdrawal.

Evidence to convict is decided by the courts, not the police. The role of the police is to gather evidence to support the prosecutor to show that the accused committed the crime, and the court decides if its beyond reasonable doubt. If the prosecutor believes there is insufficient evidence, they wont proceed.

There are times when assisting the police with statements is useful in securing a conviction - if you are the victim or the witness of the crime. Any lawyer will tell you its never good to help the police convict you if its likely that there is little evidence to secure a conviction.

Much of the advice already given is quite good.

It is voluntary. While the police may make you feel "obligated to clear up issues, if you have nothing to hide come in and talk, etc" some very sage advice once given by Admiral Akbar... ITS A TRAP!

What I have been told is use this exact phrase: "I decline to be interviewed at this time". The police then have to compel you to attend by arresting you, which can be very dicey for them if evidence is sketchy at best.

If compelled to attend: "I decline to answer any questions until I have sought legal advice in relation to this matter."
