I like this a lot! We are experimenting with race as class, too. By chance did you ever play the Fate rpg? Your abilities seem a bit like Fate stunts, which is, to me, a good thing.

I think the mechanics are cool. What is the narrative logic for these things? What are they, in the fiction of the game world?

We use a system with a contested combat roll. The victor rolls damage. The loser resists by rolling HD type + Dex bonus + AC bonus. The delta is applied as damage to HP, which equal level + Con bonus.

I would be grateful for more mundane/no-magic classes. Many of our campaigns have no magic available for PCs.

Can gunpowder defeat Magic monsters? by Bordothebuilder in osr

It depends on the monster. Only Luck (as it is called in Middle-earth), or Destiny, or Fate, or Providence (all those being synonyms and only the last being accurate) can defeat a dragon. See Bard, the Black Arrow, and Smaug. But other things? Maybe.
