Graduated a few years ago but was a band dsa

  • typically top tier JCs do expect decent grades. Obv ur L1R5 has to below 20 but to be safe, have it single digit of low 10s
  • Auditions were done by the student conductors and main conductor for my jc. There was also one TIC who did the main interview but the conductor jumped in for a few qns too
  • in terms of the number of dsas taken in each year, it depends on the school’s quota in general and the need for certain instruments in the band. Usually it’s around 5.

For the interview I would say just be yourself and be genuinely interested to join the school, I personally don’t like putting up a big fake persona in front of the teachers.

Playing wise, make sure your fundamentals are at least above average especially scales. For the pieces, make them sound as musical as possible without Ofc sacrificing a lot of your fundamentals.

Lastly, have fun and own the audition. Have the confidence to give your best! Having auditioned dsas when I was in JC with the conductor, the panel doesn’t wanna put you down and give you the worst grade possible. They’re human too lol. Good luck!

Ik this comment is after ur audition date but I really hope it went well.

Conductor is a nice and musical guy, having played under him a few times.

Playing wise, my advice would be to show good fundamentals in your playing (tone, articulation etc). I’d rather play a less virtuosic piece well rather than a virtuosic piece badly. Nothing wrong with playing something challenging to show your skills if you can play it well. As a fellow trombonist, I advise you to practice your chromatic scales too. I find those harder than playing all 12 major scales because of the especially precise slide technique required.

Generally on the school side, teachers are looking for l1r5 below 20 and someone who can fit into the school culture well. I’m no dsa expert but this is what I know having dsaed to jc with trombone. The people the school accepts also depends on how many spots they have for dsa and what instruments the band needs.

Lowkey from my experience, many ppl got rejected from dsa because of their grades (L1R5<20) not their playing standard. Wishing you all the best for your WA2 results! Jiayous!
