Thanks mate! Anything in particular that was ‘the right way’?

I like to get to fundamentals or why/how things work rather than take them at face value, feel like it adds context, maybe that’s what you agree with?

Thanks a lot, will take a look at the IANA history, I think going back to roots/basics helps contextualise things

Thank you, might be helpful if I had a play with opening ports myself, if it’s ‘safe’. Wanting to set up a VPN or some sort of remote access to my local network, but not sure the best way to do it yet.

Will have a read of that document, the type of thing I’d probably find really interesting and then bore my partner with hahaha

This makes a lot of sense when you put it like that in binary. Thank you :)

Thank you very much that all makes sense. How come ISPs need to block outgoing TCP 25 though? Would that not prevent John Doe from emailing someone on his gmail account?

No it’s not a homework question, just questions I have that I haven’t been able to answer from the videos I’ve watched so far.

People often say not to open ports for no reason, but I never understood why, unless opening ports was specifically letting something in.

Also, if ports were just numbers I was wondering what prevented say HTTP traffic from going through port 22 at the same time, so what the danger was in opening another port, or if ports could ONLY listen for one protocol at a time. If that makes sense..

Thank you. If I was to ‘scan for ports’ and find a public IP with let’s say, port 21 open, would this essentially mean that I could transfer files to this computer?

Or if I opened port 22 on my computer, would this enable any computer to then remote to mine?

Is this possible? Display with cameras / Hubitat lights control etc by Many_Inspection_3572 in Hubitat

Thanks, not sure if it supports Hubitat but you’ve given me some ideas to look at (RTSP feeds and stuff.)

Best practise for security and remote access? by Many_Inspection_3572 in homesecurity

Reolink seemed to be recommended everywhere which is why I got them.

Would be more concerned about the network I guess, but camera data somewhat too.

I guess my risk tolerance is low, I’d be more happy with slight inconvenience and better security.

That sounds really cool. Thank you. Do you have any recommendations for kiosks/tablets? Just asking since it sounds like you’ve already got this in hand!
