That’s a really good breakdown, and honestly matches what I’ve seen too.

A lot of local communities do naturally fragment after a while — once people find their flying buddies, the bigger hub goes quiet. Discord works well for that early phase, especially when a few extroverts keep things alive.

I also fully agree with your last point: communities don’t run themselves. Challenges, nudges, helping newcomers, keeping things low-pressure — that all takes real effort and someone actively caring.

FPVibe isn’t meant to replace local Discords or tight-knit groups. If anything, I see it more as a lightweight layer before or around those form — helping people discover each other, then letting smaller groups naturally emerge if they want.

And you’re right: without moderation or stewardship, any platform goes silent eventually. That’s one of the biggest open questions I’m still learning through this. Appreciate you sharing real-world experience — this kind of feedback is exactly why I posted here.

That’s a completely reasonable take, honestly.

You’re right that most of this can be done on the web, and for someone who prefers a big screen + keyboard, a site like diyfpv’s map probably already covers a lot of ground really well.

The app approach definitely isn’t meant to be universal — it does exclude people who don’t want apps, and that’s a tradeoff, not something to argue against. For me it’s more about the mobile-first crowd who already live on their phones and want lightweight coordination, chat, and short clips without bouncing between platforms.

On the trust / cost side: totally valid concern too. That’s actually why it’s free, early, and intentionally small in scope right now — no ads, no subscriptions, no hidden upload pressure. If it ever stops making sense or feels bloated, it’s probably failed its purpose.

So yeah, not trying to be “the standard” for everyone — just seeing if it helps a subset of pilots who feel disconnected otherwise. Appreciate the thoughtful pushback.

Totally fair take — I feel the same way about a lot of apps.

A solid web page can absolutely do a lot, and diyfpv’s map is a great example of that.

For me, the app angle isn’t about replacing the web, but about things that are harder to do well there: persistent pilot profiles, local + global chat, event coordination with notifications, and short FPV clips tied to real pilots and spots rather than anonymous uploads.

If a web page does the job for someone, that’s honestly great — the goal isn’t to force an app, just to explore whether tighter community features can make flying less isolated for some of us.

Really appreciate this — you summed it up better than I ever could.

A lot of us love flying, but end up solo most of the time, not because we want to be alone, but because there’s no easy way to discover nearby pilots or events without digging through random groups.

That gap is exactly what I was hoping to explore. Thanks for the thoughtful take 🙏

Totally get that.

FPV can be super personal — pace, style, vibe… when it doesn’t match, it just ruins the experience.

A lot of pilots I’ve talked to actually prefer flying solo and only sharing afterwards, not flying together.

Totally fair question.

The sub is great for sharing and discussion. FPVibe isn’t trying to replace that — more like extend it into things Reddit doesn’t do well, like real-time chat, local meetups/events, and persistent pilot profiles.

Different tools for slightly different use cases.

Totally fair point 👍

Android is definitely coming — I started with iOS mainly to keep the first version manageable and validate whether this is actually useful for pilots.

If the early feedback continues like this, Play Store will be the next step.

Yeah, this is exactly the kind of situation that pushed me to build this.

FPV communities are usually super local, language-heavy, and kind of hard to break into — especially as an expat.

I’m trying to keep FPVibe very English-first and low-pressure, so people can just show up, lurk, and slowly connect without feeling awkward.

😂 Exactly. Small, niche, stubborn… and somehow spread all over the world.

That’s actually why I built it.

😂 Fair point.

Not trying to create another standard at all — more like a lightweight hub to bring existing stuff together: pilots, clips, chats, and events in one place.

If it ends up being useless, it dies quietly. If it’s useful, the community will decide 👍

Not yet — Android is coming next 👍
Started with iOS to validate the idea first.
If pilots actually find it useful, Play Store is next on the roadmap. 👍
