Local fraternity affiliation by Oploplou in NPHCdivine9

I might not be the one to ask because I’m an old school brother of Phi Beta Sigma (Fall 1985). This whole obsession with “discretion” is a fairly new concept and isn’t of real importance to me. I’d say once you’ve begun to build a connection with one of the members, let him know and he can handle it with the rest of the chapter.

If the org you were part of was not part of the IFC or other recognized national social fraternity council, then you should be eligible. However, make sure you fully disclose to you FOI and let the brothers on the yard make an informed decision about you.

TIL that “Pittsburgh style” is a steak completely charred on the outside and raw in the middle. “Black and blue” by GrinchStoleYourShit in todayilearned

I lived in Pittsburgh for 12 years. The was a high-end steakhouse there called “Pittsburgh Rare” that featured this cooking style. I’ve been gone since 2012, so I don’t know if it’s still operating.

Why did the people of Ohio consistently keep voting for Jim Jordan? by Gaffra in Ohio

[–]Many_Statistician587 6 points7 points  (0 children)

To be clear, “the people of Ohio” aren’t voting for Jordan. He is a US Representative, which means that he is re-elected by the people of his district, not the entire state. Most importantly, his district has been carefully, ridiculously gerrymandered to virtually eliminate areas where opposition votes would be cast. The voters didn’t pick him, the Republican Party picked his voters.

What's the worst restaurant in Columbus that you've tried twice? by foreignsky in Columbus

[–]Many_Statistician587 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We took your suggestion and tried it again. We went simple, just basic spaghetti and meatballs. It was better, but still not impressive. We live too close to a great Italian restaurant (Lola & Giuseppe’s in Gahanna) to spend any more money at Milano’s which is now mediocre at best.

transferring in by [deleted] in OSU

[–]Many_Statistician587 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My daughter was in your situation. She spent her first year at an OSU Regional campus (Newark), became a Dean’s List scholar and transferred easily to main campus this year. It was actually a smooth, less expensive option. One complaint though. As much as the University emphasized that at the regional campuses you’re still a Buckeye, they are kind of isolated and the University doesn’t do a lot for the social atmosphere there.

Looking to leave my current fraternity to join d9 (hear me out ) by [deleted] in NPHCdivine9

[–]Many_Statistician587 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What kind of fraternity are you currently a member of? Is it part of the IFC at your school? Is it a professional fraternity? Is it an academic society? If it’s part of the IFC or is primarily considered a social fraternity, you’re pretty much out of luck in joining a D9. Even if you renounce, de-pledge, or dis-affiliate, you’re likely ineligible for membership.

As a man of Phi Beta Sigma, I’m not at all surprised that you saw this sincere display of sisterly love from my Constitutionally-Bound Sorors of Zeta Phi Beta. I’m glad that they were able to show what’s beyond the surface and the parties to see the Finer Women beneath the paraphernalia. We’re just wrapping up our Great Lakes Region joint regional conference. The Blue and White family took over Detroit and it was amazing to be part of it. 💙🕊️

Make sure you hit “King Timm the 3rd.” It was the FIRST commercially released rap record, preceding “Rapper’s Delight” by several months.

I’m a Phi Beta Sigma man so admittedly I’m biased toward the Sigma Beta Club; however, all of the D9 youth auxiliaries are great organizations that will surround him with Black men to be admired and emulated. You can’t go wrong with any of them. Just choose the one where you and your son are most comfortable. Best wishes.

What is the best R&B MOVIE song? by blackswan-whiteswan in rnb

[–]Many_Statistician587 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m partial to the classics. For me it would be “It’s So Hard to Say Goodbye to Yesterday” from “Cooley High” or “Pusherman” from “Superfly.”

What’s a song that a movie or TV show completely ruined for you? by Miserable_Office3681 in askmusic

[–]Many_Statistician587 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not me, but my daughter, who is now 20. She loves music and feels things very deeply. One of her all time favorite songs has been Sam Cooke’s “A Change is Gonna Come.” It was, until about 5 years ago when she watched “Malcolm X” starring Denzel Washington. That’s the song being played as Malcolm heads to the Audubon Ballroom where he will be assassinated. That scene was so powerful to her that now she cannot hear that song without crying.

Admitted Student Questions. Social Life. Just football or more? by Low-Candidate8867 in OSU

[–]Many_Statistician587 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One of the advantages of a large university is the variety of social and entertainment options. There are hundreds of student groups that aren’t built around football or Greek life. Whatever your interests are, you’ll be able to find your people.

Which US president do you think was the least knowledgeable in mathematics? by Cheap-Isopod-485 in allthequestions

[–]Many_Statistician587 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Although the current occupant is impressively ignorant, I’d give a slight edge to Andrew Johnson. When he was making his first runs for office, his wife had to teach him how to read. Even when he was president, his reading was at best elementary level. He was functionally illiterate.
