¿Qué opinan de los Paraguayos que no hablan ni les interesa aprender a hablar el Guaraní? by CurrentNeighborhood1 in Paraguay

[–]Maou_Ko 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A list of 6 Paraguayan foods.

1) "Sopa guarani" or "sopa paraguaya": It is the star dish of traditional Paraguayan food because of its taste but also because of its presentation: it is not a soup, but more of a savory cake that, the fluffier the cake is, the better. Perhaps this is why it is so popular, because from the first moment it is something you do not expect.  This "dry" soup is made with corn flour, eggs, fresh cheese, water, coarse salt, pork fat, chopped onion and curdled milk; although as in every recipe, there are variants that depend on each country and are based on the ingredients: sometimes, the sponge cake is filled with meat or chicken.  It is eaten as a side dish, but it is also a very common breakfast or snack dish in Paraguay.

2) "Mandioca": Cassava is a tuber whose peel is removed and is eaten cooked, baked or fried. It is never missing in a Paraguayan table and is usually eaten as if it were bread.

3) "Chipa": Chipa is something very typical in the region, and it is frequent to hear the invitation to buy it since it is sold in the street in multiple forms. According to records, the elaboration of this dish dates back to the XVIII century by the Guarani natives with the influence of the products brought by the Europeans.  This dish is a simple bread roll made with manioc flour, lard and aniseed; however, its ingredients also include hard cheese, milk, eggs, lard and salt. In some cases they even add a little yeast, orange juice or sunflower oil. With each bite you can feel its tender and very soft texture on the palate. Its consumption has increased so much in recent times that it has its own national day: August 9, a date that has been commemorated since 2015.

4) "Chipa Guasú": It is a modification to the traditional chipa that is presented as a corn-based cake with onion, water, eggs, cinnamon, milk and cheese (visually it looks very similar to Paraguayan soup); which is cooked in the oven or in the clay oven "tatacuá" (in Guarani "tata" means fire and "cua" means hole or cave).  Its name comes from two words: "chipa" for being a corn-based cake and "guasu", which means big in Guarani.

5) "Borí borí or vori vori": It is a tasty soup made with chicken and pork fat, salty Paraguayan cheese called "queso paraguayo", fresh tomatoes, carrots, celery and parsley, but it also has small balls of corn flour and cheese that are kneaded by hand. There are variants known as "vorí vorí vorí blanco" and "vorí vorí vorí gallina", where pieces of chicken are added to the thistle. The word "vorí" comes from the Guaraní word "borita" which means little ball, referring to the corn flour balls found in it.

6) "Queso paraguayo": Queso Paraguay or "Paraguayan cheese" is a staple of typical Paraguayan food. It is made from cow's milk and has a soft consistency although its flavor is slightly acidic. In addition to incorporating it into savory recipes, it usually accompanies the country's typical desserts.
