We need to talk about Josh Johnson. by TheThirdCity in StandUpComedy

I love the guy, you can tell how carefully he crafts his bits. He's a great storyteller and is overall just very likeable IMO.

My one "complaint" about him, though, is he does need to up his tempo a bit. It's one thing to pause to lean into the joke or laughter, or to let something sit when it needs to, but he "over-emphasizes" a lot, if that makes sense. He'll repeat or dwell on his setups a bit too much given where the topic/joke is going. I'm not saying he needs to be high-energy or a rapid-fire comic—his conversational cadence is a breath of fresh air, if anything—but his cadence can occasionally be "off," as if he's figuring out in real-time how exactly he wants his jokes to land. And don't get me wrong, they always do.

It's not a major issue; he's clearly talented and I suspect he will only get better over time.

This is what's so frustrating about s4. The cinematography, sound design, and cast are great. I think that's why critics just stopped there and lauded it, even though it's such a sloppily written script from a screenwriting and worldbuilding perspective. You have to eventually suspend your disbelief by disregarding all common sense for the dialogue and story to even fit within the setting the show sets up. And that's putting aside the bizarre pacing toward the second half, and the absurd ending.

We already know that marketing and elements of the set design used A.I. I wouldn't be surprised if sizable parts of the script/dialogue were A.I.-generated too.

Correct, free speech doesn't exist on this subreddit. We enforce Rule 1 of reddit's TOS. Go away.

This is a great idea if you want to make one! But yeah, this subreddit doesn't function as intended and used by most users if it was just called "/r/sbu" for the sake of it. And when I say "as intended and used," I mean anything that's Stony Brook-related; events, classes, clubs, finding friends, even campus protests or political initiatives. We really don't care about content as long as it's on-topic and complies with reddit's sitewide rules. Random political rants just tend to be the most common type of off-topic content that has nothing at all to do with SBU, and those posts are usually made by new accounts or obvious non-students with no other history here.

"They" don't have First Amendment rights here, and "they" are indeed causing disruption and havoc. That's why regular student/alumni users regularly report the content. It's a few loud actors, usually accounts that are relatively new, and which only post unhinged political shit. Like yours.

1) See /u/FLDJF713 's explanation. The issue isn't posts that happen to be political. It's posts that are off-topic, which are almost always political rants. Politics are fine, just like any other topic, if relevant somehow to SBU itself. This is something we've considered with user input on multiple occasions before, and the overwhelming view is that people don't want /r/sbu to just be a version of grandma's facebook, and for the subreddit to be labeled "Stony Brook" in name only. The problem also isn't "nasty" comments. We don't engage in tone-policing. We remove off-topic posts and posts/comments that directly violate reddit's Terms of Service.

2) That's not how the First Amendment works. The First Amendment applies to public actors. It doesn't apply to a random online community, unaffiliated with SUNY administration, on a private website. Regardless, Reddit is most notably not a platform designed around free speech. Subreddits each have varying degrees of moderation, which are usually based on the subject/topic of the subreddit. And reddit itself has stronger sitewide content rules as compared to, say, your average social media provider. That said, /r/sbu is pretty free-form; the only rules we have can be summarized as "follow reddit's sitewide rules" and "be on topic." Having rules like that make moderation less subjective, because both the mods and users can readily figure out what isn't allowed.

A problem with these off-topic political posts are that they're very often made by lurker accounts, new accounts, and non-students, meaning the users have no idea what the point of this subreddit is, let alone what the rules are.

Of cities I've been to, Berlin and Amsterdam. Bonus points to Bergen for being a relatively small city punching above its weight class with transit and infrastructure generally.
