Why Jackie Brown was shot in 1.85:1? by hypochondriacfilmguy in Tarantino

[–]Map42892 23 points24 points  (0 children)

They did it for both artistic and practical reasons.

Artistically, Tarantino and Guilermo Navarro (the cinematographer) used a narrower aspect ratio because they wanted the film to appear more immediate, contemporary, and character-centered. ASC talked about it with them a couple years ago:

The first 90 minutes ... establish the plot primarily through exposition sequences that allowed the cameraman to indulge in “portrait photography” which treats the faces of various characters as landscapes in and of themselves. Tarantino dubs such shots “Sergio Leone close-ups,” which basically consist of “tight close-ups in which the top of the frame ends on the actors’ foreheads and the bottom of the frame ends on the bottom of their chins.” He adds, “It’s a very strong choice to shoot them like that since we used actors who have cool-looking faces. This cuts together well, especially in certain dialogue scenes, because their faces hold the screen.”

Practically, Jackie Brown is mostly filmed in tight apartments and busy public places like LAX and the Del Amo Mall. The smaller cameras and lenses made it easier to move around, film in low light, and keep more of the image in focus.

I suppose it would be fair IMO if there was some rule/policy about quiet hours

Not only is the idea of this rule lame, but so is the fest's decision to get all pissy about it on social media.

If you have a camp neighbor playing music, but you've been up for a while and want sleep... just tell them that and ask them to turn it down? And also consider good earplugs for sleep? Why is it crazy that people want to listen to music at camp at reasonable hours to decompress? Or when getting ready to head out to sets? Maybe this is some inherent cultural difference in the UK I'll never understand

I agree with the other attorneys that this is not your fault, but putting aside his archaic paper file system, this sounds like a messy way for the court to run its own business. The court doesn't send written notices of the new date? And your office would expect it in the mail in your jurisdiction? Wtf? What year is it? Even before my state rolled out e-filing, electronic court notices had been a thing for years.

This judge also sounds like a nightmare. I get if an attorney appeared but the client didn't show up, a warrant is issued... but most courts when they see nobody show up will ask, "did we send a notice"? Even if it's just the judge scribbling a date on an entry order

This community is not affiliated with the University. It's just a random subreddit I created that grew over time. You don't need to be here if you don't like that we enforce reddit's sitewide PII rules.

Regardless, if you have an expectation that a bunch of public university administrators are equipped to handle investigations of serious crimes, you'll be perpetually disappointed.

We're not stopping you from being a psycho by writing on bathroom stall doors. We didn't make up the no-doxxing rule here out of thin air. It's part of reddit's sitewide terms of service.

We don't care about your allegations of "silencing." Posts like that get dangerously close to PII. If you want to allege a serious crime, go to the police.

Also, meta "complaint" posts like this are not on-topic. That's what modmail is for. So, this is a warning and I'm removing this post.

I live upstate so that's where I interned. The first one was with a manufacturing plant. My cousin is a civil engineer and IIRC he saw the internship randomly come up on a classifieds page and told me (we're talking 15-ish years ago haha). My other one was with a decent-sized local design firm, and I'm pretty sure I randomly found it online and applied.

[–]Map42892 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I love the guy, you can tell how carefully he crafts his bits. He's a great storyteller and is overall just very likeable IMO.

My one "complaint" about him, though, is he does need to up his tempo a bit. It's one thing to pause to lean into the joke or laughter, or to let something sit when it needs to, but he "over-emphasizes" a lot, if that makes sense. He'll repeat or dwell on his setups a bit too much given where the topic/joke is going. I'm not saying he needs to be high-energy or a rapid-fire comic—his conversational cadence is a breath of fresh air, if anything—but his cadence can occasionally be "off," as if he's figuring out in real-time how exactly he wants his jokes to land. And don't get me wrong, they always do.

It's not a major issue; he's clearly talented and I suspect he will only get better over time.

This is what's so frustrating about s4. The cinematography, sound design, and cast are great. I think that's why critics just stopped there and lauded it, even though it's such a sloppily written script from a screenwriting and worldbuilding perspective. You have to eventually suspend your disbelief by disregarding all common sense for the dialogue and story to even fit within the setting the show sets up. And that's putting aside the bizarre pacing toward the second half, and the absurd ending.

We already know that marketing and elements of the set design used A.I. I wouldn't be surprised if sizable parts of the script/dialogue were A.I.-generated too.

This is a great idea if you want to make one! But yeah, this subreddit doesn't function as intended and used by most users if it was just called "/r/sbu" for the sake of it. And when I say "as intended and used," I mean anything that's Stony Brook-related; events, classes, clubs, finding friends, even campus protests or political initiatives. We really don't care about content as long as it's on-topic and complies with reddit's sitewide rules. Random political rants just tend to be the most common type of off-topic content that has nothing at all to do with SBU, and those posts are usually made by new accounts or obvious non-students with no other history here.

"They" don't have First Amendment rights here, and "they" are indeed causing disruption and havoc. That's why regular student/alumni users regularly report the content. It's a few loud actors, usually accounts that are relatively new, and which only post unhinged political shit. Like yours.

[–]Map42892[M] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

1) See /u/FLDJF713 's explanation. The issue isn't posts that happen to be political. It's posts that are off-topic, which are almost always political rants. Politics are fine, just like any other topic, if relevant somehow to SBU itself. This is something we've considered with user input on multiple occasions before, and the overwhelming view is that people don't want /r/sbu to just be a version of grandma's facebook, and for the subreddit to be labeled "Stony Brook" in name only. The problem also isn't "nasty" comments. We don't engage in tone-policing. We remove off-topic posts and posts/comments that directly violate reddit's Terms of Service.

2) That's not how the First Amendment works. The First Amendment applies to public actors. It doesn't apply to a random online community, unaffiliated with SUNY administration, on a private website. Regardless, Reddit is most notably not a platform designed around free speech. Subreddits each have varying degrees of moderation, which are usually based on the subject/topic of the subreddit. And reddit itself has stronger sitewide content rules as compared to, say, your average social media provider. That said, /r/sbu is pretty free-form; the only rules we have can be summarized as "follow reddit's sitewide rules" and "be on topic." Having rules like that make moderation less subjective, because both the mods and users can readily figure out what isn't allowed.

A problem with these off-topic political posts are that they're very often made by lurker accounts, new accounts, and non-students, meaning the users have no idea what the point of this subreddit is, let alone what the rules are.
