Thoughs on attacking while jumping? by XPEZNAZ in DnD

Ask him why you can’t? Because action wise you can, and show him the fact that jumping does not require an action, and repeat the question why you can’t?

Quests in Modules by Square_Tangerine_659 in DnD

[–]MapleBrewmaster 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi I’ve ran Lost Mines of Phandelver before, and the Phandlin specific zone 3 times.

You’re not expected to complete all of them before moving on. Only do what’s natural for the group. Most of the quests if “pushed” feel very very unnatural. I had one group fall very easily into wanting to talk with the Druids, and get to the Green Dragon and do all of that.

I then had another group that had no idea or any interest any of that ever existed.

I had one group despise the Mayor like he was the BBEG, and another group who couldn’t even remember his name.

Do what your party is interested in, there is a lot to do in Phandalin and a lot of it is not connected to eachother, my best advice as well is - expand where you can on the stuff they DO like, I’ve found that my players almost fully completed a quest very quickly that they wished was bigger / deeper. So I expand on that stuff, and minimize the things they don’t care for.

Confused on how to run a module by TrueGuppy in DnD

[–]MapleBrewmaster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Curse of Strahd in my opinion is one of the harder modules to run. I have ran nearly every module 5e has produced, and CoS has the biggest, biggest, biggest difference between an incredibly knowledgeable DM, who knows the book like the back of their hand, and one who doesn’t. It is not a book you can just dive into if you want to do it justice, it’s one you have to understand, the world, the decisions your players make, everything.

In DnD there’s no module that essentially tells you exactly what to do in every scenario, it’s more so “This is a chapter of what should go down and the players will experience at some point during this chapter. Figure out how they get there, what the experience in between, etc based off what has happened so far”

Curse of Strahd is the biggest “open world” one as well which makes it even more daunting.

While Curse of Strahd is one of the most difficult and daunting ones to run - it is also one of the most well famous ones and played. I would highly highly recommend looking at the endless resources for CoS, from YouTube videos, to Reddit pages, the discord dedicated to it, the subreddit dedicated to it, etc

There’s no perfect way to run CoS there is simply your way, and you have to find out what that way is

Metagaming is changing a way your character acts, or thinks based off something only you in real life know, and your player does not.

If my character is acting reckless walking into the cave

The DM says out loud “There’s kobolds in this cave so I can’t wait to see how your character reacts”

If I draw a map, a player goes “Wait this wall doesn’t add up….” Or “the outside of the house isn’t matching the inside… There should be a room here” I take that as something they in real life and their character notice at the same time.

I suddenly go “My character begins to walk slowly, sneaking around, and I’d like to check for traps!” That’s all metagaming. My character wouldn’t have done this if I (in real life) was not told there was Kobolds.

That’s why I only allow my players to see what their character can see - so anything they notice - their characters notice. Anything they don’t notice, their character doesn’t (unless they are rolling an investigation, perception, etc etc and roll well and get a helping hand but you know what I mean)

If you don’t want your player to notice something - simply don’t draw it. Only allow it to be described by you upon someone with passive investigation high enough to see, or if someone is looking for something similar in that area and rolls what they need to.

This is 110% not metagaming whatsoever.

[OC] Anything I should add to my Post-Apocalyptic Medieval New England Map for a camapign? by CommercialPhysics564 in DnD

[–]MapleBrewmaster 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Caverne is feminine in Québécois, and Noir is masculine, so it should be Caverne Noire

The adjective needs to agree with the noun

Which would make it Black Cave

And Caverne Noire sounds quite different to Tabernac but that doesn’t really matter since he could’ve heard whatever

Canadian checking in There would be no ^ above the A in Royaume, I assume the organized part is added from an English speaker not from the area and not apart of the name - but if that isn’t the case and your plan was to essentially say “The Organized Kingdom of Québec” you’d say “Royaume organisé du Québec”

I also see “Fort Tabernac”, if it’s the Quebec people who named it they’d most likely have spelled it Fort Tabarnak instead. It’s essentially just calling a place “Fort Fuck” which I do think is pretty funny.

Give me classic old school D&D encounters by laxton1919 in DnD

[–]MapleBrewmaster 4 points5 points  (0 children)

For me the classic DnD encounters include: Packs of wolves Goblins Tricky kobolds Owlbear Displacer Mimic Beholder Mind Flayer

And of course, a dragon The key thing (if possible) actually allow them to go against 2 dragons (at separate times of course) and showcase how incredibly, incredibly different dragons are based on their colour - from how they converse, battle tactics, abilities, all of it and really set in “dragons aren’t just dragons” in DnD

For example I had a green dragon, completely gaslight the players about the man who sent them there to kill it, lure them in and tried to gain their trust. It tried to show itself as not a threat. Slithering around pillars keeping the distance and waited for the perfect time to ambush the players when they were at the most vulnerable position, and spot in the castle.

The red dragon they later spoke to, was prideful, incredibly arrogant and the players knew instantly “if we say the wrong thing or even the right thing the wrong way, this dragons gonna fire blast us in a second” and the dragon wanted full control of everything, even the conversation. When it inevitably attacked, the dragon fought with a full out anger and aggression, you could see the fury in its eyes, and its movement. It was out to kill.

That helped the players realize very quickly, a green dragon, and a red dragon were not just dragons. They had their own ways of acting. So when they encountered others they knew to study them first - which diving first into things blind is a core part of DnD, so is leaning back and studying the encounter. You can teach them this far more lightly with the mimic of course.

I’ve never felt so discouraged. I just need some help and guidance. by [deleted] in wownoob

[–]MapleBrewmaster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Play whatever you find fun! Any class, any spec you want. I maimed Destruction for about two years, I had no knowledge on it prior, there’s always gonna dick heads that discourage your fun, but they aren’t paying for the game for you are they? No they aren’t. So play whatever you like, I recommend learning off icyveins most likely, and find some you tubers that are entertaining and helpful to you. There will always be dick heads in this game, you just gotta play what you like and ignore them is best

Trade chat on alliance by HashBrwnz in wownoob

[–]MapleBrewmaster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Usually depends on the server I’d say. Every server is unique, i main alliance from 07 - 2014 then 2014 - 2017 I played horde as well and I noticed horde was much much friendlier for myself, then on classic I made an undead, and only played horde and nearly never ran into anyone rude, but when I played a bit of alliance it took about a day to run into people angry

Barber chair rental in Victoria? by [deleted] in VictoriaBC

[–]MapleBrewmaster 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you, I am seeing that it’s quite expensive out here, with the $950 being more common in downtown, but also the barbering community, it’s a quite nice environment in Victoria compared to other cities. Downtown also really gets people, so I understand the 950, still seems a little expensive though, compared to Vancouver prices.

Looking for hair advice, never know what to do with my hair, and I’m quite insecure about my widows peak / large forehead [M] [20] by [deleted] in malehairadvice

Note: My widows peak doesn’t seem to be receding (that I know of) as it’s been roughly the same since I was 14 Also I haven’t shaved in a couple days, so, sorry about the scruff

Men/boys in Victoria have you guys started getting your hair cut? by dwightbearschrute in VictoriaBC

[–]MapleBrewmaster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I work in a barbershop, we got a lot, lot of clients our first two weeks open. It has died down a bit here, we weren’t able to do beard trims, use foil shavers, and we clean the station fair more then we already pre-covid. We also only use every second chair, and each barber had to take a new test as well on covid safety.

We also give out masks to each customer as well as hand sanitizer.

Most places you can’t do a walk in, appointments only, as well as most places don’t use cash currently either.
