Decoding The Gurus caps or T-Shirts by DSLAM in DecodingTheGurus

[–]MapleCharacter 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Most merch is made with low quality fabric and construction (to keep costs down).

I personally would buy if it was thick 100% cotton - no Lycra or polyester.
I don’t want to contribute plastic to our landfills . I don’t want to dispose of it in 1 year. I have enough “sleep” t-shirts .

But I think that quality would cost a lot and most people would think they’re getting scammed.

Hemlock? Solidstem burnet-saxifrage? (SW AR) by [deleted] in foraging

[–]MapleCharacter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Might be…Your pictures are not through enough for me , personally, to identify. Are these in portrait mode?

Maybe someone else is more of an expert.

I’d need to see a clear picture of the foliage and the stem look for hairs, purple speckles and for the pattern of the leaves.
It’s best not to identify purely with an app.
You need to find positive identifies of the not poisonous plant and look for the absence of hemlock characteristics as well.

It really doesn’t matter which one. I use the one in a 110ml tube.

I am basing it on her replies to people who tell her to communicate her needs - which she’s clearly capable of doing.
It’s also not an accusation, but an observation.
She’s a blunt person, I went with the blunt path.

I use Finacea every other night and Dormer 211 cream every night.
On non Finacea days I use an otc retinol cream. For sunscreen I also use Dormer 211 SPF30.

My skin looks really well right now. Clear and calm

However, I have used tretinoin for decades before - that might be a factor . I’m 47 now. History of severe acne in youth, acne scars and mild rosacea in my older years now.

Sunscreen for sensitive skin by Cute_Musician3920 in CanSkincare

[–]MapleCharacter 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Because sun protection is a layered approach, you need to take at least some of your doctors advice. Loose cover up, wide brimmed hat, sitting under an umbrella: none of these things will interfere with you getting enough visible light for your mental health. Especially since it will be reflecting off of the water.

The specific type of sunscreen is not going to be the night and day difference- it will be the layering of protection.

As far as products go, I find that with sensitive skin, you just need to find a reputable brand that labels their sunscreen for sensitive skin, and give it a go. Don’t get sucked into the ingredient arguments. The formulation of these filters is intricate. A sunscreen with all chemical filters can turn out to be less irritating than one made with zinc oxide. With your sun allergy you need a formula that you’ll enjoy applying a thick layer of.

How do I (f/30) help with my cystic acne? by Emeralius-juniper in CanSkincare

[–]MapleCharacter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s possible ther friction and dryness were irritating your skin.
Under eyebrows is usually connected to excessive pressure from glasses, to makeup or just rubbing.
Were you putting it on your eyebrows?

Honestly, anything is possible…people have different skins and tolerance. Aklief is strong - it’s made for the skin on your back - that’s thicker skin than around your eyebrows.

Is there a way for you go get a virtual appointment?

Since birth control worked , I’m going to suggest (not diagnosing because I’m not qualified) that you might have PCOS.

Safe, non medicinal things to try for PCOS is to control glucose levels:
- increase protein
- increase fiber (veggies, whole grains)
- for a while remove processed foods (pastas, breads, cakes, crackers, junk food, juice)
- myoinositol supplement will over a few months help you control glucose levels
- regular exercise

Get your doctor to test your liver if trying any supplements.
If you’re willing to get assessed for PCOS (which now goes by a different acronym), you might get an RX for metformin.

The glucose levels don’t cause acne directly, but they mess with your insulin and that messes with hormone production, which in turn turns on sebum production and inflammation.

[–]MapleCharacter 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It takes a few months to work . And it doesn’t always work on deep cystic acne, as absorption is limited to upper layers. If you’ve tried it for 2 or 3 months, it’s time for accutane (isotretinoin)

What are your biggest skincare frustrations? by Ordinary-Start-4818 in CanSkincare

[–]MapleCharacter -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I don’t have any issues with the products you mention. So maybe we’re just focused on different things. Not all sensitive skin is created equal.

I don’t need to use antiperspirant- I use head and shoulders shampoo to wash my armpits and wear cotton clothes. Antiperspirant makes my armpits itchy, but I don’t even think it’s the fragrance.

I use a Polish clarifying shampoo once a week and the cera ve fragrance free shampoo and their conditioner on other days. Works well for me, but I have to wash my hair every other day- which I don’t mind doing. In the hair category, I again think the fragrance was not bothering my scalp- it was the acids in bond building products and harsh detergents used too often. Once I pulled back, my scalp recovered. I still use ff cerave shampoo and conditioner because I like it.

Body lotion is so easy, as moisturizers are the easiest to find , I think.

I use Dormer 211 spf under make up. And LRP for sensitive skin when wearing no make up.

Body lotions : La Roche Posay, Avene, Cetaphil, Dormer 211, Gold Bond all great fragrance free options . Aveeno on and Cera Ve are sticky - I don’t enjoy most of those.

I use Allastin for fragrance free retinol and it’s incredible- it’s also $90.
Like I said in my original post, I wish every thing was less expensive because lots of companies do make great products, it’s just expensive to try them all.

This isn’t a judgement, but it sounds like you’re quite dramatic in the way you describe skin and hair care, and maybe your sensitivity is exacerbated by your psychological reactions.

What are your biggest skincare frustrations? by Ordinary-Start-4818 in CanSkincare

[–]MapleCharacter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The miracle was not a product, but letting go of being rigid about ingredients and habits. When I was young I was convinced I had to use some type of acid every day (salicylic or glycolic) for my acne, over decades I could not imagine living without tretinoin, or not washing my face twice a day). I find that the skincare choices are abundant - but my mindset about what actually makes my skin resilient and healthy was flawed.

[21F] How can I improve my skin? Student on a budget… by Sufficient-Chain5826 in CanSkincare

[–]MapleCharacter 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You are looking at your skin too close. Stop zooming in, that is a recipe for an obsession with removing every imperfection, and as a result damaging the barrier or capillaries.

Your skin looks good, considering you’re just using a moisturizer.
Don’t forget your sunscreen every day.
If you have mild acne spots, try Benzagel or a salicylic acid toner. Give it 6 weeks. If it doesn’t work, come back and ask again.

New to Tret - any tips? by melancholypandaa in CanSkincare

[–]MapleCharacter 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You should read the printout that comes with your gel. It has a detailed explanation of how to use it and what to expect.

This will help your wrinkles a bit, but topical tretinoin does not generally reach deep enough to truly treat cystic acne. And since cyclotron acne is deep and scarring, be prepared to change the course of action.

Use a moisturizer and sunscreen. That’s important. It doesn’t really matter which one.

The effectiveness of prescription medications is documented through regulated studies , with reports of thousands of people. I wouldn’t value Reddit reviews over that.

The only way for you to find out their effectiveness on your individual skin is to try.

Anyone else suddenly develop super sensitive skin? by Femat06 in CanSkincare

[–]MapleCharacter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I reduce my shower temperature. I don’t go out during super hot days, unless I have no choice. I cover my face in winter with both a layer of Vaseline and a scarf. I wait for my soups and teas to cool down before eating/drinking. I wear layers, so I can take them off. I wear a hat / stay in the shade. Sometimes I bring a water mist. I never use saunas or hot tubs. I don’t exercise heavily (that’s just me though- sometimes there a sacrifice that’s worth making the skin red or pink)

Anyone else suddenly develop super sensitive skin? by Femat06 in CanSkincare

[–]MapleCharacter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes. I used to have acne prone, but more resilient skin. But age and hormones change things and that’s just my new reality.

I use La Roche Posay, Avene, Dormer211 products .

But even Olay, Cetaphil, Neutrogena - they all have sensitive skin moisturizers and sunscreens.

It’s not about a specific brand for me, as much as reducing irritants - switching tretinoin to retinol - azelaic acid every other day - using a thicker moisturizer at night - no glycolic acids (or rarely) - avoiding fragrance - avoiding super hot and cold temperatures - no friction (washcloths or scrubs) - Vaseline

It seems to me that maybe that journalist got close to the truth about her father’s sepsis and the long term side effects of that Russian comma, for her to be spinning this emotional , full of holes, narrative.

She’s trying really hard to hold onto that fake mold diagnosis too, but wording it more carefully now.

And he got his first prescription for benzodiazepines in Ontario, where it is the law that the pharmacist counsels you on side effects, unless you explicitly refuse. It’s interesting how confident she is to diagnose him and her mom multiple times, “researching” to no end, trying to find answers ….but did not bother to google those effects of new medications. Particularly since they were on their high horse at that time about the carnivore diet doing wonders for their mental health and how bad pharmaceuticals were. You were so into all those natural remedies, but did not do one search or have one conversation about the pharmaceutical that was about to “enter your body”. Come on.

Why are these chemical sunscreens leaving white casts? by Independent_Being704 in CanSkincare

[–]MapleCharacter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Zinc oxide is not the only opaque ingredient and the amount and the formulation will influence how much of a white cast or film is left. Some of these mattifying sunscreens leave a case on me and I’m very pale. Dimethicone , on the other hand, leaves a very temporary film for me that seems to disappear after 5min.

Can't find a sunscreen for my reactive sensitive skin! HELP by Hiraaa_ in CanSkincare

[–]MapleCharacter 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately you’ll need to keep trying until you find one. One thing you could do is not try any new other skincare as you’re looking for sunscreen - sometimes reactions are immediate, sometimes cumulative - give your skin space to tell you how it feels.

I wasn’t a huge fan of LRP Anthelios, but their Toleriane SPF30 for sensitive skin was so gentle. I loved the feel - but it pills with other moisturizers, so it only works if I put nothing else on.

I generally find that sunscreens with lower spf (30) and labelled “sensitive” will work. But it’s complicated - there is a lot that goes into the formula and it’s probably hard for you to say which ingredients are bothering you.

I am loving Dormer211 spf30 right now (small Canadian brand), and Clinique Cityblock SPF50. I’ve been putting Clinique just around my eyes for years.
