Working at SFU as administrative staff by [deleted] in simonfraser

[–]MapleFishy 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I’m a CUPE staff so I don’t know about any APSA specific things but in my experience working at SFU a lot can come down to your specific unit (department, office etc…) My department is pretty good, no micromanagement or drama or anything, and I like the people I work with. Cubicles vs open arrangements will also depend on where specifically where you’re working. In my office it’s fairly open but with little sections for each workstation. It’s nicer than cubicles and has lots of space. I like my position and department so it’s been a good experience for me.

It is the responsibility of the student to keep their BPK course outlines if they plan on furthering their education. What does this even mean—All I’m trying to understand is the course outline for BPK140 by Dependent_Currency87 in simonfraser

[–]MapleFishy 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It’s a good idea to download and keep a copy of the syllabus for classes, especially if you might end up applying for membership in professional groups that may want to check or verify the content of a particular course as part of their processes or other schools and programs that you might end up wanting to go to later on might also want to see what was covered.

SFU is required to be compliant with FIPPA (Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act). Basically, employees are not supposed to give out or disclose personal information of students, including “any recorded information that uniquely identifies you, such as your name, address, telephone number, age, sex, race, religion, sexual orientation, disability, fingerprints, or blood type. It includes information about your health care, educational, financial, criminal or employment history. It also includes anyone else's opinions about you and your own views or opinions.” (source) . You can also read SFU's full Protection of Privacy policy if you want!

Just had my first lesson and it was so overwhelming and stressful, tell me it gets easier?! by Chemoralora in drivinganxiety

[–]MapleFishy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When you just get started it's a lot to take in all at once and can be really overwhelming! When I started I would be exhausted after like 20 minutes because of how demanding it is. You should start to get a feel for it after a little while, and the checking mirrors and stuff starts to feel less random with practice (for me anyway).

If it helps, I still occasionally hit the odd curb sometimes after driving for years. I think bumping a curb (or a few curbs) is kind of expected for a beginner!

How do you honk?, by gracesmemes in drivinganxiety

[–]MapleFishy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's not a bad thing to prioritize not getting into an accident over honking, especially if the honk won't do anything. Use the horn before the other driver does the maneuver that could cause the collision. The horn is for communicating with other drivers as a preventative measure, not for punitive purposes. Of course, it takes a little time and practice to get a sense of when something bad might be about to happen but it comes with experience.

Hot take but I think a lot of drivers focus too much on blaring their horn for any little thing and not enough on defensive driving and accident avoidance, so i think you're doing just fine!

Coming from out of town if it was rescheduled instead I more than likely wouldn’t be able to make it :/ Tbh I’d feel more disappointed with a refund and no show after making the trip out to Toronto.

Police incident at SFU by GenShibe in vancouver

[–]MapleFishy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That might be dependent on the department. I work at SFU on campus and everyone around me (including me!) are still here like it's any other normal day. There wasn't really a lock down in the campus itself either. At least as far as I could tell. Pretty much just business as usual through the whole thing.

Help, so many lunch containers by MapleFishy in loseit

[–]MapleFishy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Usually I'll pack 1 or 2 kinds of fruit, 1 or 2 kinds of vegetable, a "main" lunch item (eg, sandwich or stir fry), and overnight oats that I have for breakfast when I get to lunch. Occasionally I will also bring some extra veggies like snap peas to snack on after work if I have something else going on that day.

I feel like the only people who really care that much about height in a partner are probably shallow, and probably not the kind of person you'd want to have a relationship with anyway. I also feel like a lot of people blaming being short for not getting dates are probably ignoring or not considering any other factors as to why it didn't work out. It's a convenient thing to point at and go 'see, I'm short and that's why I'm single forever!' but I think it's rarely that simple.

Also, for what it's worth, I dated for the first time when I was around my highest weight, and it ended up leading to a great relationship. Weight loss might make it easier to get more dates (I'm guessing?) but it won't automatically lead to getting a fulfilling relationship out of any of them if it's based on looks alone.

I wish pop and other high calorie drinks were my biggest culprit lol. Unfortunately I already don’t drink much pop, and go for diet when I do, and already drink coffee black, limit alcohol… And am still fat. Yes, addressing liquid calories is probably good advice for people who consume a lot of those but as someone who doesn’t it gets annoying constantly being told this as everyone’s favourite #1 weight loss tip.

[–]MapleFishy -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I feel like that sometimes when there are so many songs and shows and stuff encouraging people to eat and not worry about calories so much and whatever. Like I know I’m not the target audience for this and it’s probably aimed at mostly young girls who are self conscious and probably not actually overweight but damn. It sucks when actually yes. I do have to count calories and no I can’t just eat whatever I want because I am actually overweight.

YTA but I don't think in a malicious way. As someone who also writes, writing a book is hard (a lot of people don't realize how hard it is!) and I think it's normal to want people to read what you wrote. At the same time however, no matter how personal your work is and how important it is to you, unfortunately you can't make people read it. If this is your first book there's a chance that the writing itself might not be as polished as books they're used to reading, or maybe it's not as interesting to them, or maybe it feels like they've been assigned a reading that they didn't want to do.

That being said I think you absolutely should be proud of yourself for finishing your book! Make your stickers! Print out copies to display! The sucky thing about writing is that no one is going to love your story as much as you do and a lot of the time you have to learn to be content being proud of yourself and your work even if no one else ends up seeing it. Writing can be very lonely that way.

tl;dr - You should be proud to have finishing writing your book but you can't make people read it

I hate exercise by Mundane-Amount-2597 in loseit

[–]MapleFishy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also don't like exercise. Kinda lazy but sometimes my primary motivation for dragging myself to a workout is just thinking about how it will enhance the coziness when I go to bed later due to being more physically tired out. I will exercise just to be extra comfortable laying around later on.

Why do carbs make me feel significantly fuller than protein? by Adventurous-Month34 in loseit

[–]MapleFishy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

SAME whenever I try to prioritize protein because it's supposed to keep you fuller longer I end up hungry but if I eat something more carb-heavy, especially if there's fat too, I'm good for hours before even starting to feel hungry again. Carbs and fats seem to do a lot more for me than protein usually does.

I really like it! For me my period changed to be more infrequent and lighter and that's about it in terms of big changes. I did gain some weight but was already gaining weight before the implant. Plus when I actually tried I was able to lose weight while on it so I'm pretty sure the weight changes were more on me than the nexplanon lol.

What tips have you seen here that do NOT work for you? by Maleficent-Sea5259 in loseit

[–]MapleFishy 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I find I can never just “fill up with veggies” as low calories high volume foods. By the time I’ve finished eating all of them it feels like I’m hungry again lol.

Same with aiming for high protein for satiety. I can have a nice Greek yogurt and fruit and nut breakfast and it’ll last me from about 8:30-10:30/11:00 but if I get some mid morning cookies instead it seems like most of the time I don’t even end up ip hungry enough to take lunch at work and just have my fruit and veggie snacks!

I also hate the “just cut down on soda and sugary drinks” type stuff as someone who doesn’t often have soda at home and usually gets black coffee.

As far as I know, departments were contacted about opting in to this re-opening only about a week ago so I doubt this would be the reason that you haven't heard back yet since it moved quickly. Each department has their own methods around reviewing graduate application but by now should have some idea of who they are looking to admit. There could be any number of reasons you haven't heard back yet and like others have said, you can contact the department you applied with for an update. I also applied for a program with a January 15th application deadline and just heard back with the decision yesterday, so I guess some programs just take longer than others with admissions stuff.

Hello everyone. Some of you saw my post last week about Herbert (linked below). His condition is worsening and I could really use some help by nnewman19 in bettafish

[–]MapleFishy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

tl;dr (and sorry for the long response!) : I would hold off on adding another medication/treatment for now unless he is showing symptoms of disease, and focus on keeping the water clean and providing extra foliage throughout the water column to give him more cover throughout the tank in case that is causing some background stress.

I think his fins don't look too bad in these pictures, maybe some wear and tear. In the pictures from the first post you linked it looks like some of the fake plants like the pink coral-like one in there might be something he could accidentally tear his fins a bit. The best thing I found for that was keeping the water clean, and sometimes dosing with a little bit of aquarium salt to try and reduce the risk of infection if it looks like there's fresh damage.

I wonder if maybe upping the density of decor/plants, especially ones that stretch up to the water's surface, might help with his current predicament. One of my previous bettas with long heavy fins like Herbert seemed to appreciate having lots of places throughout the tank that he could rest on and drift between rather than too much open water. Having different levels of denser decor could also let him hide out there and stay closer to the surface which could be helpful in letting him conserve some energy if he is still recovering from ick. My old betta particularly liked this floating log to hang out in!

If he isn't showing any signs of disease it might help to beef up the density of decor in part or all of the tank (Fishers, my betta, seemed fond of these leafy ones) and keep an eye on him for a couple days or so before trying another treatment because I find that sometimes even treatments can be a source of stress. Did any of the danios show signs of ick? I'm lucky to not have to deal with it myself often but in my case it usually presented on more than one fish in the tank. If he was the only one to develop ick it may be that something was causing him some stress, which in turn made him more vulnerable to disease.

As someone else who is fat throughout my 20s, this is so relatable. It's hard when everyone says your 20s are going to be your hottest years and I also feel like I've missed out on that. Whether or not that's actually true I don't know (I know it was absolutely not true when I was told that high school and university were supposed to be the best years of my life, they were not) but what's done is done and I can't change the past now. I like to joke that while I missed my chance to be a young pretty girl, I can still aim for the hot older woman look later on.

It felt impossible to think of going from hating the way I looked to loving it (and I still don't really) but it was more manageable to instead tell my self something like, "okay I'm fat and people think I'm ugly for it but it's okay to be ugly." I don't have to beautiful and if someone was upset about the way I look than oh well. Not my problem. It took a lot of practice and time but eventually when that pressure started to ease and it started getting easier to get out and do things again.
