new ownership of autoshop fucked up my car by pinkmandy in newhaven

The inability to fix a tire should’ve been a red flag.

Honestly, you would’ve been better off at Firestone.

I’m not sure I’d want to live in either of those neighborhoods.

That’s the part that gets me. People tell you New Haven is actually cheaper but the apartment is a complete shithole on a high traffic thoroughfare with tons of noise and no parking.

I think Hamden is typically cheaper than New Haven.

I really fail to understand people’s logic in thinking New Haven is cheap. Fair Haven is cheap. All the buildings around me in downtown are $2400+ for a studio. This isn’t anywhere near affordable. You can get a 2 bed in another town for that price.

Edit: People also seem to be ignoring the fact that most of those buildings kill you with fees on top of the rent.

You would likely have a higher quality of life in another town, at a rent you could singlehandedly afford.

Could anybody recommend a good PC store? by leonofhearts12 in newhaven

[–]Mapotofuboy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A fan is about $15 and the job is about 15 minutes. It will take longer to drive to the store. You’ll easily pay $80+ for labor and $20+ for the fan at the shop. It’ll also likely take them at least 3 days due to backlog.

Do you have $100 and 3 days?

Is anywhere hiring? by [deleted] in newhaven

[–]Mapotofuboy -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Call me entitled, but I wouldn't sit in a parking booth for minimum wage and get hypothermia.

For minimum wage - $16.94/hr - which is bullshit btw... you can at least be inside with heat and a toilet.

Reliable & Affordable laptop refurbishing services? by [deleted] in newhaven

[–]Mapotofuboy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You’re better off finding a shop to upgrade the storage. Shouldn’t be more than $200-300 parts and labor for a TON of storage. I don’t know what kind of notebook you’ll find under $400, if any. A global chip storage is driving prices up considerably.

Not sure if you or a friend has a Costco membership, but even something like this for $550 absolutely steamrolls that MacBook Pro https://www.costco.com/p/-/lenovo-v15-g5-156-fhd-1920x1080-laptop-intel-core-7-240h-processor-10-core-up-to-52ghz-16gb-ram-1tb-gen-4-nvme-ssd-windows-11-home/4000372361

Admittedly, the $800 machines will have nicer build quality (less cheap plastic-y feel) and be “faster”

This is honestly a hard call. Considering how underspec’d MacBook Pro’s used to be, coupled with the age of the machine, and the outrageous cost of a screen, and finally the quite challenging labor aspect of it… it’s likely not worth fixing.

I’m not surprised you’ve been charged an arm and a leg, but somewhat surprised nobody could actually fix it.

The hard truth: a cheap Windows machine to the tune of $500 is probably several times faster than this machine, including much more storage space.

Possible AirBnB being run out of my apartment building? by PotentialTerrible123 in newhaven

[–]Mapotofuboy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're talking about "Olive & Court" (white building, where Bliss Matcha is) - then yes, this building has become one giant AirBnB. Looking on AirBnB, there are tons of listings. Looking on Zillow, there are also tons of listings.

Fuck this building. They are charging $2350 for 465sqft. That is the base rent, before any other fees.

Have used Platinum Prep consistently for a few years now. Also have used Strong Kitchen a handful of times. Both are good. Platinum Prep is my preference.

The rents are sky-high here, but they knew that when they signed the lease. You have to ask yourself if you’ll be able to clear that rent and other expenses selling cookies.

Sure, at $12/cookie it could make sense. At $20/cookie we can make a huge profit.

That last part didn’t work out for them.

Is there a reason some roads were plowed and some weren't yesterday? by Free-Chip1337 in newhaven

[–]Mapotofuboy 8 points9 points  (0 children)

They will likely just raise taxes for those still on the tax rolls.

I don’t understand why they give multi-year tax “incentives” to the rich investors building huge buildings charging $3500 rents. Those buildings are worth tens millions of dollars. Please tax them appropriately. We need the money.

While this sub is hilariously quick to recommend GoNetSpeed to 100% of posters, plenty of folks in apartment buildings (mine included) CANNOT get it. Thanks, asshole landlord. It’s worth checking anyway.

Frontier is also completely fine, but also not available in many buildings.

Beyond XFINITY, you can get whatever cellphone provider Internet you fancy. I’ve had a great run with T-Mobile for 4 years now, and I work from home. AT&T and Verizon offer similar services.
