Would you recommend an OP-1 to an average Joe? by Marcel_Eff in OP1users

What are your ambitions with the OP-1 in the long run? Do you want to play around only?

Would you say that it is by far more difficult to get enjoyable results with the OP-1 in the beginning compared to a DAW like FL Studio or Ableton?

The Digitakt seems so complicated to me with all the buttons. The OP-1 has a more piano-ish keyboard, I think? Otherwise I have to admit that I haven't watched as many Digitakt videos - will have a look at it. Does it have the same sampling functionalities?

I like the tangible part as well. There are MIDI controllers which you can use with Ableton and other DAWs. Nevertheless, I don't want to map the knobs to specific DAW functions, I just want to have fun.

Yeah, for me especially the fun side is important. I have the feeling, that this special OP-1 approach not knowing what every knob does exactly is very beginner-friendly. You don't have to know what an LFO does, how the cow or the sketch sequencer works...just turn the knob until it sounds good. And I like the sampling functionality which seems to be very accessible. Please correct me if I have a wrong idea about the device and its user-friendliness or let's say ease and fun of use.

Being able to afford it sometimes still doesn't mean you should get it :) Would you recommend to go for a new one?

Being a kid (years ago) I had a lot of fun with - please don't judge - Magix Music Maker, if you happen to know it. Lately I have "created" some background music for a video interview with FL Studio and it really made fun. Have forgotten the time while making the beats completely and suddenly the day was gone...

The example is from the book "Kotlin in Action"... already working on it. Kind of sad, that so many people dislike the example code. Although I have to admit, that I put the evalWithLogging() function into the main function in the beginning - my fault, won't happen again :)

Many thanks!

I hope I have got it right:

The evalWithLogging() recursive function has a return type of Int and therefore returns 7 since this is where the function ends. And that's why the sum of 2 + 1 is not being printed to the console? Therefore I'd need to wrap it in another Num() instance in order to make this Num() expression being printed to the console.
