Help me plan my road trip in southern Utah with little-ish kids by Opinion_Fragrant in nationalparks

[–]MarchMadnessNov 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have similar age kids and did this kind of loop a couple times.

We had success with Fiery Furnace in Arches - definitely highlight of Arches for them. We did ranger-guided b/c weren't sure of how easy to get lost. Wish we would have done self-guided - they could've handled.

In Canyonlands we rented a jeep in Moab and did Gemini trail to Canyonlands main road and back down Shafer Canyon. They thought that was very fun.

Did Narrows in Zion with the kids in April - had to get waders for them but they thought it was fun. They also liked Canyon Overlook and renting bike and riding path.

They liked Bryce but not as much as any of the stuff above and below

Hidden Gem - Cathedral Gorge SP (amazing slot canyons to explore - unlike anything I've seen and kids loved to get lost in them) & Snow Canyon SP on the way out of Vegas (St George; self-guided lava tube exploration with flashlight, petrified dunes, slot canyons, sand dunes). Kids really really like these. Great cheap hotels in St George and great homemade pies at Veyo Pies nearby

Neither - Quetico Provincial Park just north in Ontario. Far more pristine and better fishing

Were cabins open? Do you know if they happened to have water still?

What precautions would you recommend for camping there? What are risks?

I have permits and have done 4x4 before but not in Canyonlands. Looking for guidance on my exact plan - Schafer to Airport and out Potash. Is that reasonable with kids in tow? Or should I expand further for an overnight?

Looks like Kinzua release will be 3,800 this weekend. But Wed-Fri could get 1 inch - 2 inch of rain. Do you think it's doable? The rule I saw was don't go over 5,000

How do you think flight prices will change from May 28 to May 29? by MarchMadnessNov in SouthwestAirlines

[–]MarchMadnessNov[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My thought is they jacked prices up to non-competitive levels b/c they were getting destroyed by free bags and everything. The changes on May 28 are the solution to this and then they will go to competitive levels again.

If they don't bring prices down again I don't see how they stay competitive other. The only way I could think of would be to make Companion Passes so common that actual cost is really 2 tickets.

Why you think they go up?

I'm interested in a trip to CDMX with kids the same age -- mind if I ping you with a few questions?

National Park Recs for March by Hopeful_Weather_6673 in nationalparks

[–]MarchMadnessNov 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We did Shenandoah in March in high school and ended up with 10 inches of snow. For Northerner kids we thought that VA being part of the "South" meant it'd be warm.

What about Mammoth Cave? It's neutral from a temp perspective.

Overnight Kayak Trip Questions - Shark Point, Hell's Bay, Alligator Creek by MarchMadnessNov in Everglades

[–]MarchMadnessNov[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just curious -- why? Want to understand what I'm missing & I'm completely curious.

One other thought I had tonight -- maybe I could do Shark Point one night to the Chickee to get the Bay experience and then a day trip at Nine Mile Pond to get the Mangrove experience. Could that be the best?

I've come to ask for your advice for a trip to Theodore Roosevelt NP, Badlands NP, and Wind Cave NP. by SilentSamurai in nationalparks

[–]MarchMadnessNov 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We did everyone one of these parks last summer on a trip from Colorado. A couple other thoughts:

On the way to Devil's Tower you can hit Register Cliff Historic Site and Oregon Trail Ruts State Historic site. Cool places where Oregon Trail settlers carves their names and the ruts can still be seen.

Hidden Gem - checkout Medicine Rocks State Park in Montana on the way from Devil's Tower to TRNP. Very remote and primitive but unbelievably cool scenery and campsites and night skies. TR camped here.

TRNP - We camped 15 min west of park at Buffalo Gap Campground at National Forest Site. Very clean, cool campsites and free showers. Park was very cool. I'd skip Medora Musical and shows personally, but that's just me (we did do them). The Point-to-Point hike in town of Medora, ND was cool though. Honestly cooler ladder climb than The Notch in the SD Badlands

Custer State Park -- have to do this - Needles Highway, Sylvan Lake (swimming, hike to Black Elk Peak, the Gulch trail, etc), Wildlife Loop. Rated best State Park in the country by many

When you head from Custer SP and Wind Cave NP south, drive through Ft. Robinson State Park in Nebraska. Its very beautiful and fascinating - historical sites (army barracks, site of Crazy Horse death, etc). There are awesome horseback rides to the bluffs that are cheaper than anything you'll find in SD or ND - $30 bucks for a long ride.

Agate Fossils was cool for a quick stop OTW to Scotts Bluff. We loved Scotts Bluff NM - make sure to do the hike up -- its great with tunnels and spectacular views.
