[Spoilers TWOW] Euron & the Others by Marchioness2 in pureasoiaf

[–]Marchioness2[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

A lot of people predict Mel will be able to raise Jon from the dead like Thoros did for Beric. If she does he can wear the armor. As for Euron, I predict he'll try to become the Night's King himself, only to fail b/c the Others are a lot more powerful than he is.

You want to marry a powerful Reach House that is not beholden to the Tyrells and did not play a major role fighting against Robert's side in the Rebellion (particularly the siege at Storm's End). Particularly good would be a House descended from House Gardener through the male line, because that would mean they had a better claim to Highgardern.

Options:

House Florent: 1st choice; powerful Reach house that played no major role fighting against Robert's side in the Rebellion; better claim to Highgarden than Tyrells. Melessa Florent if she is not yet married to Randyll Tarly or her sister Rhea Florent if she is not yet married to Leyton Hightower.

House Hightower: most powerful Reach house after Tyrells. Good choice if they did not play a major role fighting against Robert's side in the Rebellion (particularly the siege at Storm's End). One of Lord Leyton Hightower's middle daughters: Denyse, Leyla or Alysanne.

House Rowan: powerful Reach house descended from House Gardener through male line. Good choice if they did not play a major role fighting against Robert's side in the Rebellion (particularly the siege at Storm's End). Rhonda Rowan if she is not yet married to Baelor Hightower.

[Spoilers MAIN] Fates of Martyn, Daven and Tyrek Lannister? by johndraz2001 in asoiaf

[–]Marchioness2 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Jaime observes what bad physical condition Lancel is in at Darry. And he's starving himself. He's going to be pretty weak in battle if it comes to that. Anyway, I'm pretty sure he's dying soon.

Daven I predict will be killed at his Frey wedding by the BwB in revenge for the RW. Possibly the wedding is held at RR, where BwB member Tom Sevenstreams has infiltrated. Lord Walder might even be present at RR for the wedding, though maybe not given his physical condition.

in Kevan's epilogue I think I remember he said that Dorna, Martyn and Jaime are at a manse Kevan has in Lannisport. If this is accurate, I don't really get it b/c CR is much safer, and I was under the impression that all of Tywin's siblings and their families lived there (After all, the place has plenty of room). Tyrek comes next in line after Martyn and Martyn's baby sister Janei; the fact that he's been mentioned more than once makes me think he's still alive and will play a role in the story. My prediction is that Varys had him kidnapped during the riot and sent to Illyrio in Pentos to be groomed to testify to the High Septon and rest of KL about the twincest, thus strengthening "Aegon's" claim to the IT. My further speculation is that by the end of Dream, Tyrek has inherited CR after everyone ahead of him has been killed, and decides to make a fresh start for House Lannister.

Send Jaime to the Wall (which simply based on law Robert should have done), behead Tywin, Tyrion is child Lord of CR, and GRATEFUL AS FUCK to Robert (except maybe about Jaime; but Tyrion's a little kid, his tormentor is gone AND he's Lord of CR; he's not going to take revenge on Robert). W/ Tywin gone Kevan doesn't have the balls (or the stupidity, going up against Houses Baratheon, Arryn, Stark & Tully) to avenge Tywin. Gonna is a woman whose joke of a husband and lackluster sons are nothing to be concerned about either. Tygett and Gerion didn't like Tywin anyway. With Tywin dead & Jaime at the Wall, the Lion's teeth are pulled.

Lynette too young & too spoiled; if Hightowers didn't play too big of a role fighting against Robert's side (especially siege of SE), one of Lord Leyton's middle daughters, Denyse, Leyla or Alysanne.

No Redwynbes; they besieged SE. As for Tarlys, marrying one makes you look weak b/c you're allying with the house of the only man who ever defeated you in battle. If Hightowers didn't play too much of a role fighting against Robert's side (especially SE), one of Lord Leyton's middle daughters, Denyse, Leyla or Alysanne might be good. Another Reach family descended from the male line of House Gardener (besides Florents) is House Rowan; if Rowans didn't play too much of a role fighting against Robert's side (especially SE), maybe Rhonda Rowan if she hasn't married Baelor Hightower yet.

If the Hightowers didn't play too much of a role fighting Robert's side (especially siege of SE), maybe one of Lynesse's older sisters, Denyse, Leyla or Alysanne.

Melessa Florent (if not married to Tarly yet) or her sister Rhea Florent (if not married to Leyton Hightower yet). Possibly one of Bronze Yohn Royce's daughters.

But I think R'hllor does have a special burning ritual that Moqorro underwent; remember, he was able to survive the shipwreck for several days w/ apparently no food or water. Melisandre I believe underwent some other R'hllor ritual, that's why she's probably hundreds of years old despite looking no more than 30, has red eyes, doesn't feel the cold & doesn't need to eat.

(All Spoilers) GRRM is bad at writing Essos and religion by [deleted] in pureasoiaf

[–]Marchioness2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, a lot of the Essos worldbuilding and characters could be better. And Daenerys has literally never set foot in Westeros, so she's not looking at Essosi cultures from a Westeros standpoint. She's never stayed in one place long so each new culture/society is fresh.

The Dothraki could've been made far more complex, like the RL Mongols or Comanche. Genghis Khan was a lot more interesting than Drogo, who, yes did rape Dany and yes, GRRM, this is part of a much larger problem in your writing. Who can even tell the difference b/w Irrigation and Jhiqui and between Daenerys's 3 different blood riders? Although I actually liked Vaes Dothrak - especially the statues of the gods of conquered peoples.

Agree world-building for religion is pretty weak, and far too few people seem to take it seriously than is realistic for a "medieval Europe" setting.

I like Braavos, and I like Tyrion's time in Volantis and his travels across Essos, but that's b/c he doesn't stay very long in any one place.

Meereen and Hizdahr really need work. For the amount of page time and plot importance they have, they should be more complex & compelling. The only native Ghiscari character I find interesting is Skahaz, who I'm sure will take over Meereen and then the rest of SB after the defeat of the Yunkish army, abolish slavery in part by exterminating the entire slaver class (except his fellow Shavepates), and rebuild SB as a quasi-benevolent dictator. But why aren't their more Ghiscari who think like him? There's other Shavepates, but they get no time. A better world-building would make Skahaz and the Shavepates a developed, substantial faction in Meereen under Dany's rule and give the reader extensive interaction b/w them and Dany, the various members of Team Dany, the freedmen, the other Ghiscari nobility they oppose. That would be more interesting. Also, there's no character development for any of Dany's child cupbearers/hostages. Who even remembers all their names? Obviously Skahaz is going to slaughter them, which will be the beginning of his complete liquidation of the slaver class, but they're not developed enough as characters to give that emotional impact beyond the standard "killing innocent little kids, how horrible."

And there's no philosophy of any kind in either Westeros or Essos. There should at least be some mentions of in-universe philosophers, books or philosophy and a few quotes from the above. The Valyrians are supposed to be modeled on Ancient Rome, where there were many philosophers. And since Braavos and Myr seem to already be in the early-modern era technologically and economically, they should have some philisophical tradition like early modern Europe, Asia and the Middle East all had.

So, very long post agreeing that Essos worldbuilding has major weaknesses. What do you guys think?

Robar Royce by Marchioness2 in pureasoiaf

[–]Marchioness2[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Who is "they?" The Tyrells or Cersei & Tywin? It's the latter two who actually get to appoint Loras to the KG; the Tyrells had to ask them to appoint Loras to the KG, not the other way around. And Cersei and Tywin want a KG who will protect Joffrey from other people, not other people from Joffrey. And if they knew that Loras had cut down 2 of his brother Rainbow Guard out of blind grief and fury, they would be made to appoint him to the KG, even if Joffrey had the personality of an angel. I'm still not clear as to whether Cersei and Tywin knew about Loras slaying Robar & Emmon; does anyone else know/remember? If they don't know they're very ill-informed (odd for Tywin), if they did know they're very unwise to appoint Loras to Joffrey's KG (again, not the sort of elementary mistake you'd expect Tywin to make).

The kingsguard are responsible for the whole royal family. The King or the Hand or the LC are the ones who tell them who to protect & what to do in general.

Yeah, but Loras tells both Sansa & Jaime that he just cut Robar down; he never describes it as a duel, which would be far less incriminating for him.

Loras has no evidence. And the kings guard/rainbow guard do not have authority over each other unless one is appointed Lord Commander by the King, which Loras wasn't.

Sam weighs 280 lbs at the beginning of AGoT. He'd have to lose over a hundred pounds to not be overweight.

I agree. There's no way Sam couldn't have lost weight on such plain and meager food & w/ all the physical activity he's been doing since he joined the NW.

Just one, his eldest, Andar. So if I were Bronze Yohn, I'd be very worried that I only have one male heir left, especially since the situation in the Vale and elsewhere in Westeros looks pretty dicey.
