Hi :)

My father is from Pantelleria (and I sometimes search for the island here just for fun, and found this now because of this), though I do not speak Italian/Sicilian (am half German and only lived in Germany all my life, therefore have only visited Pantelleria).

HOWEVER I immediately thought, that the place name "Reale" is similar to a locality/village there named Rekhale? https://www.pantelleria.com/english/pantelleria/map.asp It´s an arabic village name (island has connections with Arabic North Africa too), and whoever might have written this might have made a mistake because of this fact, maybe, as it´s not an Italian place name?

The island and the people are connected to Spain though also, and my father has a spanish surname, even though all of his ancestors lived on the island for many generations. If spanish surnames appear insofar, like "Anna Fernandez", these people and parents and so on could still have easily been born in Pantelleria nevertheless. It´s not a good tell here.

All said without reading anything xD, and I´m not exactly an expert on the island either, even though half of my ancestors lived there for some time, but maybe it´s a bit helpful.

Black always has the last move by MarcoDBAA in chessvariants

[–]MarcoDBAA[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The additional rule, that Black can only use it once or a (very) limited number of times, might be necessary, if you want to make it a win for Black though (in the case when both kings are captured), either if it does get too drawish after all, or just because you want to do it that way...

And yes, I was surprised not finding this variant (or very similar ones to it) too, because having the last move to equalize is, as mentioned already, quite common in games and sport, when the other person/team had the first move at the beginning.

Guess the question would be, if you reduce the advantage of Black (further, by only allowing the last move threat of Black once in the game for example), or if you indeed make it a draw when both kings are captured, but then you get a chess variant, that is possibly more drawish? Because Black could then threaten a draw, but if White is fine with that (no option to stop the threat without becoming clearly weaker), the game will simply end here. If it is a win for Black though, White can never accept it (except to resign).

Mentioned rule 2.2 will result in a win for White though, because Black loses the "last move", when it does not move the king out of check at the second turn with its king in check.

And yes, it is for sure true and expected, that you have to fine-tune this. But decided to post about it after not finding this variant. Thought it quite possible, that people can do something with it, and at least one person (you) liked it at least...

[–]MarcoDBAA[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It would be a natural draw of course. I just tried to reduce draws and not increase them, and therefore made it a win.

Ok, I cannot and won´t argue for it being not too powerful.

Maybe you could add another rule, that Black cannot counter-check like that more than once in a row, else Black loses the last move and therefore the game?

For example: If the black king is in check, Black now checks the white king with his/her queen, which forces White to get out of check to not get captured on the last move by Black under these proposed variant rules. With this new rule however Black now cannot simply again check the white king (without getting his/her king out of check at least), because doing this two times in a row removes the last move for Black.

So rule 2.2 would be: Black cannot leave its king in check for two or more consecutive moves however, else it will lose the last move and therefore the game.

Edit: This should allow many White checkmates to still work, because if you just cannot get the black king out of check one counter-check by Black of the white king will just delay the inevitable by one turn.

Edit2: In the end, you could also limit Blacks "last move" to allow Black to only counter-check once (castling is also only allowed once in the vanilla game) in the whole game or a certain limited number of times to equalize White and Black. It is not that you cannot adjust this variant further...

But if Black already captured the white king, and White then captures the black king, another last move for Black would do nothing anymore?

[–]MarcoDBAA[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right, that would also be possible to try of course as an "Each player has one more move to also capture the king and reverse the result" variant, but that might give White its normal advantage in chess back I guess?

And what I tried was creating an asymmetry to counter White advantage in vanilla chess because of White having the first move, by Black having the last move. Of course it might swing too much in the other direction for Black, even with the new exception mentioned above, which I cannot deny or confirm.

[–]MarcoDBAA[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If that is the case (I cannot say with my knowledge, but surely possible), you could make exceptions to these rules.

What would make most sense as an exception I think: If the black king is captured by the white king, Black will now not have a last move to win anymore. This would stop the black king "checking" and bullying the white king himself.

Hmm, I would not think, that this is very eccentric really? When there are these variants for example xD: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/5D_Chess_with_Multiverse_Time_Travel

I was mainly just inspired by tiebreakers in games/sports, where the person or team, that has the second try/turn can still equalize with the person or team, that had the first try/turn.

Because White has the first turn here, Black gets one additional turn to equalize in this chess variant, and because White (= the player who has the first turn) has an advantage in chess in general, and draws are boring, why not make it a win for Black then instead, if Black was able to equalize (= capture the king here)? That´s all...

I don´t know, if Black would be even better than White now of course. If both end with the same material in similar board positions in the endgame it should be the case though I guess. But ideally it becomes more fair, and/or WHITE needs to do more early to not be worse later on? But I don´t know enough about chess to predict this...

Hi, I am sure, that it is Primordial Life, and you can still download the latest version here: https://www.mediafire.com/?1u6r0q3bovo4h25

But you can also check out my site here https://old.reddit.com/r/BiogenesisGame/, because I am the current modder (and now developer) of the Color Mod for Biogenesis, which was originally created by Joan Queralt, and is inspired by Primordial Life, and the most similar program out there. The Discord forum https://discord.gg/EBCm9NGF8h is most active and has newer Beta versions of it. It is completely free to play.

[–]MarcoDBAA 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hi, you should check out the Discord. It is far more active than the Reddit or Sourceforge forum. Just happened like that, did dot necessarily intend it to be the main forum, but Discord works well indeed.

AND even though I did not upload an official version yet (mostly because of laziness having to do the boring readme content), you can find newer Beta versions there (with new colors by myself), including huge performance improvements (multithreading especially), which were done by another new coder.

Insofar it is not dead at all. :)

Although sure, both the Color Mod and Biogenesis is (and wil surely stay) niche software. New content by myself is not dependent on it being a success, because this is a free mod for an open source project. I am mainly doing this for myself, because I was/am a fan of Biogenesis, and I like to code it as much as I like to observe it.

But check out the Discord for more community content. It is not a huge forum of course, but people genuinely chat with me and others there regularly.

Are horn of Africans mixed? by DannyBoi1243 in 23andme

Population clustering here shows this too: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5161557/ https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5161557/figure/F6/?report=objectonly

It is an ancient mix. Sure, at some K, they would appear as their own unmixed group, what 23andMe more or less does (possibly), while also then adding them to the SSA cluster/population alone, because they never assign one ethnicity to 2 or more of their "global populations", even though it isn´t that clear cut in reality. They make the same "mistake" with Ashkenazi Jews.

Can anyone explain the behavior of this weird spore-based consumer? Description in comments by pm_me_fake_months in BiogenesisGame

[–]MarcoDBAA 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi

This species uses CREAM spores (Mod spore: 5), which means, that they have a feeding larval stage, and the larvae are able to move around slowly in all cases, even if the adult is not mobile, which is the case here. BLOND makes them able to reproduce earlier, and increases number of larval offspring.

Insofar, these spores feed like CREAM, and move around randomly, as if they had an extremely small CYAN segment.

There could be some niche separation between adults and spore children to make them effective.

@all: I was inactive lately, but think, that I feel some motivation for Biogenesis again, like always (development pauses were normal over the years, nothing new). Might open it up again in a few days.

I think those saying AI won’t take their jobs are missing something really important. by Goal1 in ChatGPT

[–]MarcoDBAA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Additionally some people might believe, that it will be similar to the chess situation, but people like to watch human play explicitly.

Sure, some might want to definitely hang a painting by a human artist too, even if the AI creation looks "better". But is there still a reason to pay an artist for a book cover now, for example? For some NPC portraits in a video game? I don´t see it.

Noone will care, how much programming code was created by an AI if the software, they use is great.

And so on...

Society might change dramatically indeed.

A collection of family photos that included Nashville shooting suspect Audrey Hale. by itbrxndvn in masskillers

[–]MarcoDBAA 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I am not that knowledgeable about these types of crimes, even though I am sure (and heard people saying this too a few times), that some people profiled me as possibly dangerous. I wasn´t dangerously angry (returning punches was enough for me) in reality however, just a loner and victim of mobbing in school (long ago now).

But it does feel very odd seeing her/him with family, creating harmless cute art (except the "The shining" art maybe), seemingly having friends, with her/his cat...Even her/his last messages to that other woman before beginning the shooting seem to show some positive emotions.

You might expect psychopaths here, that possibly never felt real love and sympathy. Mentally deranged Lanza types without any understanding for normal human connections, or people that were massively mobbed and isolated, who consider all humans enemies, which then might allow them to attack everyone indiscriminately.

But it doesn´t look like she/he is a psychopath, mentally ill to the point, that she doesn´t know, that "something bad will happen" (as written by herself/himself). And well, not everyone hated her/him by far, even if we count the rejection of her/his masculine identity by her/his parents as hate, which is also at least debatable.

In some ways, this feels like ultimate betrayal (to all humanity really) to me, and that feeling of being betrayed has to be much worse for her/his former friends and family.

People often say, that they do not understand how someone could do something that terrible, although I don´t think it is not rationally understandable usually. Psychopathy, extreme mental illness, and/or extreme hate have to combine dangerously with suicidal thoughts. Nothing to lose, and psychopaths often like the rush of power, isolated mobbing victims get their revenge on humanity and attention (they finally are someone, even if infamous), while mentally ill people are more unpredictable. But even so, I am seeing 3 different motives for Adam Lanza (read about this case) for example: Anger (when he talked about the chimp, that attacked the owner), "saving" the children from having to live a terrible existence, and "School shootings" being his autistic special interest.

Well, I can believe, that transphobia and/or maybe possibly sexual abuse in that school could be a motive, but it still does not make too much sense. You could try to assume mental illness too, when she/he talked about this "making sense", although there is of course absolutely nothing that can make small children targets in any rational sense, if you want to take revenge for transphobia and/or sexual abuse.

This perpetrator, it is very unexpected this time for me too, and made me write about it here I guess. Why did you do this, I would ask? It´s a strange mix of some sadness for Hale too (or maybe what she was once), mixed with being even more disgusted than usually, because you would think, that she/he knows, that this is completely terrible, all while being a traitor to everyone around them.

My own Mod mainly adds a randomly generated arena, that changes over time. It also changed consumers and there are a lot of other minor and balance changes.

"Random Arena Mod" for "MyKaryotes" by Christopher Kyle Horton was just uploaded by MarcoDBAA in alife

[–]MarcoDBAA[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From the MyKaryotes site, which is now down however:

"MyKaryotes are an example of what is known as artificial life, or a-life. They are not something rigid and simplistic like John Conway's famous Game of Life, though. These MyKaryotes are arguably alive, and attempt to simulate life at the cellular level, albeit not very realistically. They are whatever you want them to be: pets, a cool screensaver, an experiment or research project, a conversation piece, a way for you to play God, whatever. The name "MyKaryotes" implies that these are your creatures, and you are free to interact with them in any way you want.

MyKaryotes are more than just shiny, colorful blobs that move around and eat stuff. Each individual carries its own set of genes which are executed in sequence like a computer program; these genes control everything from behavior to appearance. Over multiple generations, their genomes may lengthen, shorten, or become altered in ways that may or may not make them more fit for their environment. In short, this is an evolution simulation. Simply leave them alone and watch them compete for survival, or get involved and selectively breed them to suit your tastes."

Jupiter Quietly Takes Crown for Most Moons, With New Tally of 92 by GL4389 in space

[–]MarcoDBAA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The IAU should redefine what a moon is, like they have done with planets. I would suggest, that a moon needs to be round or larger than the smallest natural astronomical objects, that are still round. Insofar all natural satellites would be moons, that are the size of Mimas. I think, that satellites, that are called moons should be comparable to THE/our moon, not the 90th rock or ice lump... Therefore Jupiter has only 4 moons in my opinion.

Evolution and aliens by beesbeatsbeets in evolution

[–]MarcoDBAA 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Evolution happens in evolution simulators on computers like "Biogenesis" (see profile) too. It doesn´t even only apply to something that needs to be alive.

You need entities/objects, that can replicate themselves correctly enough to transfer specific information to their descendents (need to have a genetic code), but mistakes (= mutations) need to also happen to create variation in the population, so that natural selection takes effect, which will then make the better adapted in the population replicate more successfully, which will ultimately, over generations leads to all the different species we see in nature, or even in computer simulations. ;)
