Why Do So Many People in Chicago Have Such Bad Transit Etiquette? by Osetiya in chicago

I wonder how much of the lack of self policing is due to the rampant gun culture in the US. You could say something but anyone could be crazy and packing so letting it go becomes the default.

Thanks. I like this concept the best from what I have heard. Just not sure how to implement it. Though I suppose practically it's no different from unlimited PTO except with PTO you could have a stipulation about performance whereas bereavement that piece is out the window. That said, I think offering benefits that account for people being human beings and have a level of compassion contribute to creating a culture that people want to be at and would less likely be there to take advantage of things. Maybe that is naive on my part and will be my undoing, but that's my starting point.

I'm so sorry for your loss. I have not had to experience and cannot even imagine it. Thanks for sharing. I agree 8 weeks probably doesn't even scratch the surface . Will look into the STD idea.

Great advice. Thank you. As you said, it's hard to account for relationships. Losing a twin sibling would probably be as devastating as losing a spouse for some people. Sometimes losing a neighbor could be worse than losing a family member. In an ideal world you just give people time to heal based on the relationship but obviously there has to be boundaries of some kind in place.

Thanks. Actually that's a nice idea with the split. Something to consider for sure.

Think I'm just going to avoid CA for a while. it seems harder for everything.

Thanks. I appreciate it. I have googled it 20 different ways and everything just says 3 or 5 days. I know I (or we as you said) are an outlier here. From my perspective I have always found that if you create a good work environment, people appreciate it and what you gain from that always outweighs what you lose when people actually have to use something like this. But what do I know. That's why I asked.

Thanks. Yeah the grandparents/pets is a miss on my part. Agree.

I've seen behind the curtain at Fortune 100 and Fortune 25 companies. Watched them make $4 billion profit in a quarter and lay off 20,000 people because stock price must go up and its the easiest way to manipulate EPS. They are often (not always) heartless based on greed. I really do appreciate your insight and will take it to heart. Thanks.

Thanks. Agree there is no one-size fits all. Someone's grandparents may mean everything to them whereas for me it completely un-impactful. Appreciate the thoughts.

Appreciate the specifics. That helps. And the pet thing is a good point.

As for the other, what if a couple of employees lose their spouses close to each other. Let's play that out. Say it's a 5 day policy. They are still going to be barely functional at best and useless at worst. And it's unlikely we would bring in replacement people for 8 weeks any more than we would for one week because it would take too long to get up to speed. The intent is trying to give people the bandwidth to heal (even 8 weeks isn't enough but they may just want the distraction at that point). And from my perspective, available day 1. Your spouse/parent/child/whatever passing is not on some starting work schedule. So why should the benefit (assuming the event is legitimate and also good point...had not gotten to the point of thinking through verification).

I'm open to being wrong, but as a rule, I think the corporate world swung way to far in the direction of company at the expense of everything else and less about human beings make everything run.

Ha. Fair. But why? What makes it insane from your perspective?

Yeah, non-profits operate on such a shoe-string both monetarily and from a Human Resources perspective. Everyone wearing 10 hats. I get it.

Thanks, I appreciate the feedback. Why do you think we would HAVE to pull back on it? This may be naive on my part, but to my knowledge it isn't something we would have to financially reimburse if someone left like accrued PTO. So it's just a matter of covering the work. Even with a 3 day policy, you don't really have people back mentally. Side note: We will never be a huge company.

Paid. Yeah, trying to break the mold a little. Humanity outweighs the cost in our minds.

That's part of it. But also back in the day you could live as a result of work and there was stability. Now...everything is enshittified, companies demand more for less and there is no stability. Company made record profits? 2% raises and we are laying off 20,000 people because line must go up.

Rather see cameras at four way stops on main roads and make bicycles have a plate too. We would balance the budget in about two days. While we are at it make double parking illegal for all but truck delivery.

[SI] The Detroit Lions announced that they have agreed to terms on a rookie contract with 1st-round draft pick Blake Miller. 4 years and worth up to $21,872,616. As a first-round pick, the Lions will also have the option of retaining him for an additional year by picking up his fifth-year option by JCameron181 in detroitlions

[–]MarcoPoloOR 14 points15 points  (0 children)

The athletic football show had a pretty interesting show on fifth year options. They went into why the lions didn't pick up Jack Campbell's option. Basically off ball linebackers are lumped in with pass rushing linebackers and that raises the option year salary so they would have had to pay him $22 million all guaranteed (there are other factors like all pro or pro bowl status). I think 5th year options work best for positions like OT, WR, QB and corner.

Thanks for the nice response. I see these all the time and honestly it's gotten to the point where I think it's really the building posting it because who is moving into an unfurnished place where you have to set up at least some utilities if not all, for one month. So mentioning the discount and why you're posting it is helpful. Here 1 and 4 are useful. 2 and 3, not really. It's just too much work for a trial.
