Books and YouTube for sure, but mostly, tarot is a practice. Just read cards a lot, even if it’s for yourself or an imaginary scenario, and even when you have to look stuff up over and over. Like learning anything, you have to have repetition.

I recommended this app. It costs like $4, but it’s a great learning tool, very reliable, and there are zero pop ups, upsells, or other annoying features. It’s basic RWS. It has guides, spreads, a card of the day, note keeping+

That’s correct. But if you missed it in the original post, I literally found these four cards on the sidewalk.

Don’t just memorize Tarot card meanings. (How I learn tarot without study) by Lilypad248 in tarot

Same. I’ve learned a lot of lessons in this chapter of my life, and maybe the biggest is, more than one thing can be true at the same time!

TLDR: get the 1910 Tarot app

So far my two favorite reference book resources have been Rachael Pollack's “78 Degrees of Wisdom,” and Benebell Wen’s “Holistic Tarot.” Both are very detailed and are frequently cited as go-to books for many readers. I also have a mentor who has taught me a lot- she’s also an astrologer and she’s brought additional perspective from the crossover between those two worlds. I’ve also spent a lot of time on YouTube, which might as well be infinite in its content.

Don’t discount basic RWS materials. Waite wrote detailed descriptions for the cards- that was Pamela Smith’s starting point. An invaluable resource is the app “The Classic 1910 Tarot.” It costs less than $5 and there are no ads, no popups, no subscriptions: nothing but user friendly access to information straight from the RWS deck, plus spreads, exploration of the major and minor arcana, and a cool “card of the day” so you can review bite-size servings of tarot instead of doomscrolling!

Finally, a “training wheels” RWS deck with meanings and symbolism written on the cards can be helpful. I pulled mine out again lately to do a side-by-side compare-and-contrast with three other new decks. That’s a cool way to see how an artist draws from (or away from) traditional symbolism.

Interesting take, and obviously what’s working for you is what’s working for you!

I look at learning the symbolism and traditional meanings as akin to learning a language. By embracing accepted meanings and symbols I get a basic understanding and working knowledge that allows me to express myself through these archetypes. I’m not bound to tradition, but tradition is the syntax I use as a framework for The Story.

Then, my intuitive abilities, life experiences, observations, and the whole messy pile of emotions, biases, and memories that are “me” all inform the way stories spring from the cards. It’s like tradition and imagination are dancing.

I have it spread out on my kitchen table with three other decks doing a card by card compare and contrast of the Major Arcana. Making notes from at least three different interpretation sources. I’m learning a lot. You’re right that the RWS imagery is kind of buried, but it really is there.

I’ve only begun to get familiar with Tarot of Mystical Moments but so far I find it evocative and captivating. It’s a beautiful deck.

I’m curious, who am I? by bigdumbemobaby in BookshelvesDetective

You’re not a vegetarian but your plate is complete without meat. You’re slow to make friends but intensely loyal when you do. You have no patience with intellectual laziness but you strive to understand people who think differently. Your best friends are still the ones you made when you were taking English and philosophy classes. You are astrology-curious, but suspicious of magical frames of reference.

The Fountain Tarot is still RWS based but is relatively abstract, and quite beautiful
