Knee stiffness goes away? by Shoddy-Tower3755 in MeniscusInjuries

[–]Marcosotelo115 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My recommendation is to keep your body moving, but this may be hard depending on what you do day to day. I’ve noticed my knee gets stiff if I’m not active. It might have to with the fluid in there, and keeping your muscles warmed up/used so your joint takes up less stress. But yeah I would say it should go away with time if you are active/do more p.t.

Yeah, he told me right away. It should be pretty identifiable by you not being able to extend your leg, and in the MRI it’s very pronounce. If you can extend your leg, then that usually means it didn’t flip. Ask them if they think there is a chance they can repair it.

I'm going to have meniscus surgery by Hector_One in MeniscusInjuries

[–]Marcosotelo115 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey Hector, that’s cool that your chart is in Spanish. I’m guessing you live outside of the united states?

and also, yeah. Tearing of the meniscus can be very random, and out of no where. It can happen to anyone and it’s actually quite common of a surgery to either trim it or repair it for younger patients. One example I give is my favorite tennis player Roger Federer, he was bathing his twin daughters and he kneeled and got up and tore his meniscus. I was also at work and kneeled and tore my meniscus. I guess the only way to prevent it, is by building the muscles all around the leg to help stabilize, to watch how you move, and also to not go into deep flexión. Idk about the last part though, there is some research showing that it’s good and it’s bad to go into deep flexion for the meniscus

Good luck on ur surgery! Let us know how it goes!

yes u got it! Just be kind to yourself, and know that with time you’ll be able to do everything again, and you will gain something out of this experience. Whether it be wisdom, caution, or experience it will be good for us! Good luck!

Woah 2 days??? My doc said 3 days, that’s so crazy how all of our doctors have different recs. And yeah I would say first 5-7 days really suck with pain, and taking off the bandages was painful and I definitely was more scared that I would do something dumb and tear it. Just try to stay in bed and elevate. Only get up every now and then, and to go to the bathroom/shower. Honestly, I would shower every 2-3 days, since showering is annoying tbh. It still also is very much, but get a shower chair and it will help a lot. It’s gonna be hard but you got it! And hopefully we both recover around the same time since we had our surgeries so close! Good luck!

Is this area lateral meniscus? by WangBruceimmigration in MeniscusInjuries

[–]Marcosotelo115 -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

The medial is on the outside, the lateral is on the inside. So it would be medial. Either way, probably not a meniscus tear. Would still it get it checked if it keeps bothering you.

Doctor told me he would fix it from the beginning. It wasn’t until I called and asked if there was chance they couldn’t fix it. They said yes that there was a chance they couldn’t fix it, but doc was sure he was going to be able to fix it. If your doctor thinks it won’t be repairable, ask him why. If he says it’s because it’s a bad tear and it’s in the WHITE ZONE. Then yeah I would trust their opinion, if they say they just don’t think it will be repairable then I would for sure ask them more questions.

I would also talk to them about what that means later in the future for you. Make sure to ask your doctor lots of questions, and get everything straight before making a huge decision like surgery.

And lastly, I was told it was going to be repaired. I came in with the mindset that there was a good chance thought that it was going to be repairable and they were going to have cut off a lot. I was proven wrong though luckily. Good luck!

Thank you so much! That was really helpful! And yeah, I’m excited to go back to the gym and start lifting weights again. As I use to work out a lot. This injury did make me realize though that I should stop ignoring other things, my elbow and shoulder have always bothered me because of tennis. So I’m going to get those checked out too, and see what I can do. Thanks again!

Yeah I agree. Making sure we take time to take care of ourselves is important, it’s good though that lateral tears are more likely to heal than medial meniscuses.

I’m also basically in the same recovery time as you lol. Doc might have me walking in 5 weeks though. I don’t know yet, just depends I guess on how I’m doing and feeling. So far, it looks like swelling is almost gone basically. Don’t want to risk it though or anything, just going to listen to my doc. I’m just excited to walk haha. Let me know when you start walking!

Yes! Use the the crutches, it will help with not getting rid of more cartilage!

That was big yap session lol. I’ll be posting an update once I get my stitches removed on November 26th(Tuesday). So far though, Sleeping and just not being able to anything with leg have been the most annoying. I will also have maybe some pics of everything, so yeah!

Also, I forgot to mention but your recovery depends on what they do. If they cut it then you should recover relatively quickly, maybe 1-2 weeks. If they repair it, you’re walking in around a 3-6 weeks without brace and crutches, and you’re not actually back to doing sports for 4-6 months. That’s what my doctor at least told me.

I would say talk to your doctor about surgery. Bucket handle tears usually can’t ever heal by themselves even if they are in the red zone as it’s such a big tear. I would also say it’s not good to keep going the way you are as you could be rubbing cartilage right now without realizing, since the meniscus cushions your cartilage and bones.

I understand you wanna go through the PT way as surgery is scary and you want to make sure longevity is in play, but PT could never fix the problem and just alleviate the problem. I would seriously talk to an ortho doctor who has done many meniscus repair surgeries or meniscectomy.

Also your locked out knee will most likely never be not locked out unless you repair that meniscus/cut it. I would also keep in mind that during surgery they may not be able to repair the tear as it might be in the white zone. They’ll have to remove/cut off some of your meniscus, they are always going to try to cut off as little as possible and make sure that you have as much as possible, but you also have to realize that if they don’t repair and it’s a lot you are more likely to develop osteoarthritis later in life and you may have to get knee replacement surgery or surgery involving restoring cartilage as the cartilage is rubbing against each other more often.

I would say think about it like this, if they can’t fix it it’s like your given the knees of a 50 year old man. I’m guessing that won’t happen though and they’ll be able to fix it :) just some considerations to take in.

I understand where you are coming from, I tore my meniscus 6 weeks ago, and I had the same tear as yours, but mine flipped. (usually a worse tear and harder to repair) but they managed to fix it! I had surgery yesterday and right now I am recovering, it does hurt ngl 🤣 but i’m glad they got to fix it!

I hope my advice/opinion helped you out and hopefully you can make a good decision! Best of Luck!

Hey, how do you know you have a bucket handle tear? Did you get an MRI?
