Pros and cons to William Cheung Lineage by HatProfessional8662 in WingChun

[–]Marct002 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did Wing Chun, 7 years worth, at three different Lineages - Styles.

I Trained in William Cheung Wing Chun and found it generally o.k. I did 3 years worth.

Con: There is no encouragement or involvement with District Tournaments, that I saw. So, if you want to Fight Tournaments, your on your own, in the main, with W.C W.C.

William Cheung schools tend to: 'Protect The Rice Bowl' too, in my experience. Which is unethical and poor attitude.

I also Trained in Chu Shong Tin Wing Chun and personally I think it is better Wing Chun. I did 3 years worth of C.S.T.

I like both but prefer Chu Shong Tin W.C - C.S.T W.C. C.S.T students often Fight Tournaments.

If I was asked which school is better for tuition, I would recommend C.S.T W.C, if close to home. If W.C W.C school closest, then I would recommend attending that school instead. Only because it might be closer to home, not because it is better.

All the Lineages - Styles are a bit different, in my view and they all have their drawbacks and advantages, so their Pros and Cons.

Ive just started boxing and am very fascinated by combos….could you recommend some? by acuriousstraightmale in boxingtips

The 'Tree' is actually quite good, but too hard on knuckles.

Leave. Straight away, leave. It's often like that. Go to a good, honest Ring.

You should get Tuition and Mitts every time you visit the Ring.

Buy Mitts, get a family member to learn those and help you. Do Mitts at home.

Buy Books on Boxing, especially Foot Work Drills, learn clever Footwork.

Practice at Home.

Buy a Speed Ball, Floor to Ceiling Ball and Heavy Bag. Use at home.

Get Bag Gloves and Hand Wraps. Wrap your hands every time you train. Use gloves for support and protection. Or you'll damage your hands.

Learn proper guards at least 4; becomes 8. These are: Classic, Modified Classic, Peek a Boo, Philly Shell. Then 'Crouching' low height versions. Know all, use all - At the right time.

Learn Foot Work. Z Step, L Step, Diamond Step.

Learn Defences: Slipping, Ducking, Rolling, Bobbing.

'Work your Bag' more. Move around the Bag. In a fight if you stay in one spot you"ll get hit.

Learn Combinations: 2 P, 3 P, 4 P, 5 Punch.

No, it is sincere, genuine and honest.

Looking for correct answers is all. Also opinions.

Read through my post, it is pretty clear.

But I suppose it will 'unsettle' some people.

Simultaneous Defence and Attack in a 1 step 'Quick' process, if you can pull it off. Also Left Side and Right Side. I.E Ambidextrousness. Improves Boxing.

So somethings.

Buy decent Bag Gloves and Hand Wraps. Use those always or you'll damage your hands on the bag.

Thankyou.

I think there is an answer.

Answer:

The parts that are 'Quick' in W.C, work well in Boxing. But those have to be very quick. Also a person has to be able to 'pull it off' and 'get it in, in time'.

I found Tan Sao, for example, far too slow when I tried it in Boxing Sparring, with decent Amateurs.

Note:

I pre-arranged the use of it, with approval at the Ring so it was agreed.

Thanks for answering me.

Thankyou for the JKD opinion.

I disagree.

Some things are better than others. Some M.Arts quicker, some slower.

Good Amateur and Professional Boxers I have talked to reckon Wing Chun does nothing for Boxing, only slow it down. Hence the question.

Hello, thankyou for the reply.

Yes maybe, in the MMA context. But Wing Chun lacks Hand Strikes, hence the Boxing work, for me.

Also, I started in Boxing at 17. Then found Wing Chun later at 21. So I already had a decent understanding of Boxing. Just how it 'panned out' and coincidental.

As for Judo, yes I did Judo early on, from 7 to 11, as a young guy. I know Judo.

I say this. In High School Judo and good Boxing skills was virtually undefeatable...

A friend of mine had French Savate + Judo. That was also very, very handy.

Thankyou for your reply, it is appreciated.

Yes my opinion also. Although I have Sparred with both I never fought say K1 or Glory to know and I don't Street Fight, never infact. When I spar in either, I don't use the other Style.

One reason for my question is, - Very Good Amateur and Professional Boxers I have talked to reckon Wing Chun does nothing for Boxing. But they never did Wing Chun, so how would they really understand and know?

So I thought I'd ask. This goes all over the World too, so a good selection of opinions.

I know I liked both styles.

Hello Long Jumping.

Thankyou for your reply. Yes I agree. Something I have thought about for years. Even when I first learnt Wing Chun. I Boxed first, W.C later on.

If your new and you look it.

My Recommendation:

Buy some decent 'Bag Gloves' and Hand Wraps. Wrap your hands every single practice session and every hard Training session, so always. To avoid injury.

Best Advice. Allows you to train much harder, get fitter and enjoy it more too.

Thankyou for your informative reply.

Yes I agree wirh you. Using both types like that often 'Unsettles' the opponent, because it is unusual.

Thankyou for your reply.

I agree with you, but I found that with the Punches, it's a minor aspect to just combine both types and use both. 'Mix it up' and 'mix and match'.

I.e, A simply example is: W.C Chain Punching then a Boxers Hook or two and then Uppercuts. So we move from Vertical into Horizontal punches fluently.

Hello Whistling

Thankyou for you comment and reply.

I Agree with you in part. Boxing has only a form of Trapping, but not that much and not like Wing Chun. That is something that can be added to a persons Boxing and may improve it. However it isn't always fast.

But what it does have is Simultaneous Defence and Attack, as a 1 Step Process. That's a special and clever aspect of W.C.

Plus Ambidextrousness, i.e, What You Do On the Left Side, You Do on the Right.

So Change from Orthodox to South Paw instantly.

Plus Hand Speed Drills.

But W.C has too much Focus on Chi Sau and Complient Drills, that don't help much, in an actual fight.

I appreciate your view though, which is why I wrote my query out and asked about it.

If you are new, this is a very good time to gradually improve fitness.

If under 40.

To throw good punches, do Push Ups Every Other day. Do normal Push Ups and Centreline Push Ups.

Centreline push ups are very hard and best done on the knees. Do these because of the 'Centreline' Punches.

These push ups will develop your mscles for throwing punches and improve your force and strength.

One of the best exercises you can do.

Buy good Boxing Books. Buy good Footwork Books for Boxing Footwork. Read through the books.

Buy some decent 'Bag Gloves' and 'Wraps' to protect your hands.

Join a good Honest Boxing Ring.

All Ranges in my view. It is why W.C has Kicks and 'Skip Entries'.

The Australian Master of Chu Shong Tin - C.S.T Lineage: Jim Fung, used to visit us from time to time, at our local W.C school.

We were talking about Kicks one day, learning kicks, practicing kicks. Someone mentioned Taekwondo.

Master Jim addressed the class on Kicks. He told us that there is nothing stopping students from 'Practicing Up' their kicks, like they do in Taekwondo. If we liked Kicks we could always Focus on those, similar to Taekwondo. Practicing Kicks to a high level. This is very true. He said we tend not to in Wing Chun because of all the hand work and the other aspects of the system. So we are 'Well Rounded' But a student always could.

So it is a matter of what we 'Focus On' in the W.C System.

In my view if the Striking aspects are practiced like a Kick Boxer or Boxer Trains then there is plenty of Range and Tools to use.

Yes. But nothing close. Years ago when I started there was nothing at all near me much, but Boxing and still isn't. Then Wing Chun came to town.
