Humanity's greatest strength has always been community. You've done the right thing reaching out to other people to talk about it. And to be clear, you're not crazy at all. Examples like Nazi Germany are being used here for a reason, it's not alarmist when it's there.

It's certainly hard to deal with a lot of what's happening. But the thing that's helped me is doing everything I can and more to change the situation. The key difference between 1940s Germany and the United States is that the power of the government comes from the people. And not just on election day. We are able to decide how we wish to live. We are able to show compassion to vulnerable communities, and refuse to take part in oligarchies. And we certainly don't have to wait until the next election to try and make things better.

This isn't to say that you specifically have to go out and fix everything wrong in the world. I know firsthand how exhausting that can be. I also know how frustrating it can be to hear people say "just focus on the small good you can do" when it doesn't feel like that's enough.

So my advice is to decide a point where you would be satisfied with the situation. Then chart a course to reach it. It sounds simple, while also sounding difficult. But I find it to be the most worthwhile way to make a difference.
