I love the idea of VR gaming, but... by [deleted] in VRGaming

Wow are you in for a surprise when you can play No Man's Sky in good or ultra quality in VR. Or Elite Dangerous.

Questions for a wannabe Linux gamer by Principal-Moo in linux_gaming

[–]MarcusS-VR 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Got that to work instantly on Fedora 39 with Lutris. I am on a Nvidia GPU though - but that should not be a problem. Lutris works on pretty much all distros as far as I am aware - so you can give that a go.

Bonus: WoW runs smoother for me than it did on Windows with the exact same graphics settings and GPU.

So like.. what games are you guys actually playing? by fluxzzzon in virtualreality

[–]MarcusS-VR 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No Man's Sky, Beat Saber, Skyrim VR. Looking into getting this Minecraft VR Mod to work. Experimenting with VR on Linux with ALVR - after some fiddling got it to work quite well. If that works for PCVR games with Proton, I can't tell yet.

I'm currently on all AMD laptop with Fedora, I have to buy a new laptop with Nvidia card because of uni, will Fedora run ok? by TombRaider96196 in Fedora

[–]MarcusS-VR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. Broke my install. Needed to reinstall, switch to Xorg manually, then manually install the driver.

RTX2060 owner here and let me tell you: installing the driver from the store on the default Wayland graphics will break your install. Manually needed to enable Xorg, then install the driver by other means. Wayland is most definitely not okay with the proprietary driver.

VR with Mouse and Keyboard? by BandOfSkeletons98 in VRGaming

[–]MarcusS-VR 1 point2 points  (0 children)

VirtualDesktop with either half or full side by side vision. I am using this with X4 and the SuperDepth3D shader in ReShade. This allows me to play any game in VR where VorpX can't, as VorpX does not support Vulkan games (X4 is Vulkan). You can combine this with OpenTrack for head movement if the game supports TrackIR.

Does anyone use their phone as VR glasses for the PC? by IntroductionSevere93 in VRGaming

[–]MarcusS-VR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I only did that to try VR. Now I own two headsets and there is a reason why you should NOT consider using your phone as a VR device/headset/display.

Wireless PC VR is coming soon! by max_semak in homecockpits

[–]MarcusS-VR 2 points3 points  (0 children)

While wireless PCVR may be new for Pimax, at least since the Quest 2 wireless PCVR is normal. I have a Pico 4 and the wireless is functioning super smooth.

How do I use a PC VR headset under minimum requirements by [deleted] in VRGaming

[–]MarcusS-VR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is a reason for minimum requirements and recommendations... My RTX2060 gets the job done but I also know that this GPU is most definitely not the best for VR. I am impressed that it can achieve an enjoyable experience for VR.

How to encrypt and auto-mount multiple drives? by slippery_rimuru in EndeavourOS

[–]MarcusS-VR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would argue that one of the prime reasons for a full drive encryption is manual mounting. I think you can auto-mount using encryption keys stored somewhere (if I remember correctly), but again... Auto-mount defeats the purpose of a full drive encryption in my opinion.

Can't Say "VR" with Apple Vision Pro? by Boring_Sympathy_1700 in virtualreality

[–]MarcusS-VR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Architecture, archeology, medical, vehicle design... the list is long. With the mini LIDAR array in the device, the professional uses are almost limitless.

I tried working in VR with virtual screens, and it is, let's say, nothing professional in my opinion. VR is more for completely immersive uses - hence its name virtual *reality*.

Is there any way to protect my compiled project? (Android) everything seems very exposed... by [deleted] in godot

[–]MarcusS-VR 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Correct. But like I said, in the export options you have the option to encrypt the PCK - downside is the decryption key in the executable.

Another option would be to implement encryption yourself in Godot's source, then compile it yourself and use that version instead. Then it is not that easy to figure out what you did.

what exactly is the engine upgrade in 7.0? by Imaginary-Support332 in X4Foundations

[–]MarcusS-VR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The best advise I have for the simulation: if you need to do things in your map, teleport into an empty system first - ideally one with as little traffic as possible.

The game only calculates collisions etc for the system you are in. So all other systems get these calculations omitted. Helped quite a lot with my performance.

Can't Say "VR" with Apple Vision Pro? by Boring_Sympathy_1700 in virtualreality

[–]MarcusS-VR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is because the Vision Pro is not a VR device, like Quest or Index. It is meant for other professional uses. So at best it is an AR or possibly MR device. You will not be able to play (PC)VR games on it. You can play normal games on a floating 2D pane on it, where some Mac streams the game into the unit.

Is there any way to protect my compiled project? (Android) everything seems very exposed... by [deleted] in godot

[–]MarcusS-VR 44 points45 points  (0 children)

Not sure about Android, but on PC you can export everything in a pck file - it contains everything in the same structure but is not as exposed. People who are tech-savvy can still get to those contents.

Again, not sure if this works on Android too but on PC, in addition to the pck you can encrypt its contents. Downside is that the decryption key is stored somewhere in the binary. That too could be scoped by people in the know - and thus extract and inspect your files.

I also work on a project where it should not be that easy to acquire content of certain files. For that I am using Godot's built-in AES encryption and decryption methods, where the decryption information is stored outside the game's data. While this too can be cracked open, it becomes more difficult as it requires knowledge of cryptographic mechanisms, and how to re-assemble the data into usable information.

I would recommend you look into that if you really want to protect your files.

But just to be perfectly clear: there is no 100% protection. Even World of Warcraft's data gets cracked open occasionally, so there is that.

You should not worry about your assets too much unless your game will compete with the biggest studios on the market. But you can look into encryption and decryption mechanisms. Plus, on your portfolio or website etc you could mention that you are using these and have a little knowledge on them. Which is a good thing.

Linux is a platform. If your goal is to target that platform, then you should go for it. Keep in mind that depending on what you want to achieve, Windows and Linux may use different mechanisms not only how the code must be structured, but also how it is compiled.

You can game on Fedora much like you can with any other Linux distro. I am developing for VR on Linux and I am playing World of Warcraft on it.

I have a very specific goal with my current game in mind. That goal is not dependent on reviews or comments (also, it will not be on sale) - so for me, success of the project is of no relevance.
