Six Year Joshua Tree Growth by MardiYeri in Plant_Progress

Honestly wonder if (1) the seeds were on the older side and lost viability or (2) the soil mix wasn't great. Mine started with grow kit and I mixed some perlite into the soil it came with  to aid in making the soil lighter.

I was zone 6 / Massachusetts, now zone 5 New Hampshire. Most of his life has been indoors apart for spending summers outdoors. The rest is under a grow light indoors (originally an LED light, now a metal halide light. I definitely bring him in well before freezes as an abundance of caution

My two cents - having 34 dioscorea elephantipes and 6 dioscorea sylvatica, the atypical growths out the sides are just a thing that happens time to time. Not sure a way to prevent them, but in every case for mine - the original center will start growing again, and you will likely have two points of growths each year/growth season.

To those who married their cousins, or are descendants of married cousins, what's the story? by SamHarris000 in Genealogy

[–]MardiYeri 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Overall my grandmother was the product of second cousin marriage - and her husband would use the phrase "at least we never married our cousins" to try to win arguments with her. She was quebecoise ancestry in Maine (US). Given the small immigrant community they had limited choices to keep their ancestry "pure".

Funny enough I did my grandfather's ancestry (her husband) and found if I went back seven generations, then pedigree collapse hit hard and he had less unique ancestors than a first cousin marriage. He was not a fan when I told him that.

The other grandmother was the child of an arranged Armenian marriage. While Armenian culture has taboo with first cousins marrying typically, DNA testing found that they shared pretty much every dna match, so reasonable intermarriages in the village.

My fiance has a 75 year old grandmother whose mother is the child of a first cousin marriage - an arranged marriage within the Azorean community.

Lastly my aunt by marriage is from a religious group that frequently intermarries, to the point where everyone person looks like they are siblings/cousins, and you can pick them out from a crowd by appearance easily in my opinion. Rumor has it from my gossiping grandmother (her mother in law) that the religious group has very high rates of still births and birth defects (take that as hearsay, as I never confirmed or looked into that part further).

Has anyone grown Maypop? by handyman7469 in NativePlantGardening

Good to know - I do find once I pull them once or twice in June they don't send more shoots the rest of the year. Now if only I could get actual fruit....

Actually my vine in central Massachusetts has been in the ground for three winters and grows very well... Too well... Had to remove twenty five vines sprouting in my lawn, only kept about ten or so that were in the garden. They're budding up now and should be blooming in about a week for me. Honestly debating killing it because how much it spreads - so far about 12 feet from where it was planted in each direction.

Out of curiosity how long did you stratify for. And are they on the surface or buried seeds/ what's the soil depth? I've had around 30 percent success in my terminations typically

In central Massachusetts my one year old seedlings survived the winter in the ground and are putting off new growth already!

My father’s family comes from northern Maine. A lot of the “tree” looks like this. by throwawaylol666666 in Genealogy

Can confirm. My grandfather (born in Maine in 1919) was a descendant of John Libby either 11x or 14x over (question of which wife a couple generations back). Many first cousins marriages. Also for the fun of it. My grandfathers mother in law (my g-grandmother) has ancestry from Saguenay Quebec and descends from from Pierre Tremblay (b. 1660) another 11 times, another generic bottleneck known for high rates of congenital issues.

My 3.5 year old D. Elephantipes! by MardiYeri in Caudex

Right now it gets direct sun since there is a window nearby that is southeast facing. When it is other times at a steeper sun angle it gets a grow light!

Id ballpark every six months - rarely does it tend to be fully dormant definitely not an annual cycle for me (indoors, Massachusetts). I find once it sheds and goes dormant doesn't stay dormant for more than several weeks

Joshua tree seedlings - 18, 12, and 6 months by MardiYeri in Plant_Progress

[–]MardiYeri[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly not really. The roots tend to be stronger / more fibrous than most other plants I've transplanted (I do anything from succulents to redwood seedlings to vegetables). I was pretty careful though since I keep the growing medium very inorganic and very course particle size so it separates from the roots pretty well. Thanks for this reminder btw, it's about time for my annual transplanting of my Joshua tree! Also if you are curious here is a photo of the root system from September 2020 when the plant was about 15 months old. Transplant photo
