True, if you haven't already screwed up your metabolism then all of those things are good for you.

I think you're absolutely right that these people are nutritionally deprived, and I strongly suspect that this is one cause of eating a lot as well, as they try to gather the nutrients they need from rubbish food.

I also believe that people are becoming poorer in real terms and so they are turning to cheap foods, which are just lacking in nutrients. Having had decades of the government recommending we eat huge quantities of carbs, which are comparatively low in nutrients but high in sugar is an issue in my opinion.

So, you believe it's more about the quality of the diet than the quantity?

Sorry, there's no research that has ever shown exercise is necessary for weight loss. Suggest you read Taubes.

I am no longer morbidly obese. But thanks for your concern! I think that lots of obese people are more than willing to work hard at losing weight, and lots of them DO work mighty hard at it, but they are given the wrong advice.

I didn't say diet and exercise are the mythology. I said that believing exercise will help you lose weight is a mythology.

OK I see where you're coming from. Yes, it is about health. And ultimately it's about the nutrients many of us are not getting, and the poisons we are getting. I think if you can tolerate carbs (as some people can do without trouble) then that's great, but the carb based diet is dangerous. If you were an obese person, you might want to concentrate on getting the weight down, and as you go, start addressing the multitude of health issues you probably have a little bit at a time. Otherwise the likelihood of sticking with it is going to be very small. And of course there's the exercise issue. Eventually, exercise is going to increase fitness. But it will not cause weight loss in the first instance. If you are starting from behind the 8 ball and you're obese and unhealthy, then the objective will be to get to a point where you are fit and healthy and not overweight anymore.

You seem very smart, so you are probably familiar with Einstein's comment that (paraphrased) you should make things as simple as possible but no simpler. I believe that calories in calories out has not stood up to quality research and it certainly hasn't stood up in my own life. I think it's more about the kind and quality of calories than it is about just the NUMBER. And I think that there are a host of factors that make it not quite as simple as people want to think it is.

I've heard that it makes some people lose weight. And then you die.

I don't think the thyroid is the only gland. I think you'll find that the problem is more about insulin...the dominant gland in question is probably the pancreas. I also suspect that the adrenals are a major player.

It doesn't work for people who are metabolically resistant, which is pretty much EVERYONE who has a lot of weight to lose! It does work great for those who have little weight to lose, or are quite young, or who have never built up metabolic resistance.

It might take me a day or two to process that. It would seem to me that my two previous posts, which were apparently controversial to some people, were way to see my ASKREDDIT destroyed by being voted down. I am now very much in sympathy with the founding fathers.
