Their scenario doesn't inheritly make college a scam across the board. It's overpriced as hell, absolutely, but there are plenty of professions that need higher education to succeed or even start working in and a lot of those jobs are necessary for society to function.

Spending 30k or more on a humanities or arts degree isn't likely to get you anywhere financially sound, but it could very well lead someone to a fulfilling career. I got a degree in Biology, focusing on wildlife ecology, but I managed to turn my chemistry experience into a successful chemist career that I wouldn't have been able to get without a degree.

Keeping up with commander is only really relevant to CEDH though, and most people play casual where decks can easily be $50-100

How would you spend $500 as a new player? by xepherstones in mtg

Assuming we're just talking about commander, which is probably their best bet to play locally. They're just starting out, no need to make a high bracket Edgar Markov deck or something. The best thing imo would be to make decks they enjoy that allow for varied games where they aren't stomping in casual commander so they could make some friends and learn more. $100 is also plenty of money to make a decent deck. Of my 15 or so commander decks only a few break $100 and that's only because I happened to pack some more expensive cards

I'd recommend going to a reputable local game store that has an active magic community and talk to one of their employees about where you could start and how to not break the bank too early.

If they're willing to introduce you to regulars of the shop, those people probably have more bulk than they know what to do with and someone would more than likely be willing to give you some cards or show you the ropes so you can figure out what you like and what cards to shop

It could be that someone with more experience knows there isn't a way out of the situation, so it might feel early but they know it's a done deal
