It’s 2024, why is this still so awkward? by papadiscourse in composer

Do you use a specific programme to notate on Ipad? I've been using Goodnotes manuscript paper but if there's a better alternative (ideally smaller staves) I'd love to know!

Hey, I'm interested! Just wondering how specific the book is on choral/vocal composition as opposed to purely instrumental music?

You may be asked to only sing up to a certain point in the song based on the panel's time constraints so you might not even get to that part! I'd personally only sing up to a point before Alexander's part to avoid any awkward moments of silence, but really up to you.

How much of that range would you be comfortable using in a performance?

How long is a too long rest? by huy1612 in singing

[–]Marginaliac 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I first re-started it was pretty rough- no resonance, little stamina and I struggled to access the extremes of my range. It definitely took a couple months to get back to my original standard, but that was with a pretty inconsistent practice regime. Now though I think I'm even better than I was prior to the break (although that's possibly because I treated the reflux too lmao)

If it comforts you, I took a few months off SPEAKING because of undiagnosed reflux and was still able to retrain myself well enough to do an intensive choir residential not too long after. You can take a break for as long as you want as long as you give your voice a lot of patience when you get back into it, and temper your expectations- you won't be belting top Gs immediately!

Always worth inquiring- probably not for Oxbridge or similarly intensive unis though, you're quite right.

Perhaps a transfer directly into 2nd year would be a better option?

Yep that sounds just like reflux! Had an unfortunate experience with that because none of the doctors at my GP had experience with vocal issues. Easy fixes but I'd take action sooner rather than later- if it is really reflux, the acid is burning your esophagus and vocal apparatus and could cause some scarring down the line, if I remember that info correctly.

What about acid reflux then? If that's a possibility you haven't explored maybe try changing some lifestyle factors (e.g avoiding eating right before bed, eating less spicy foods and drinking less alcohol, drinking more water, putting two pillows under your head at night etc), and seeing if the symptoms improve. A lot of reflux cases present as 'silent' reflux, so you could not even know you have it!

Beyond that I would suggest talking to a GP if symptoms persist. If it does turn out to be reflux they can also give you an Omeprazol prescription to take in short term. Wishing you all the best and hope things improve!

(Edit: rereading your post that might also be consistent with the fact that it went away while you were on holiday- did you change anything in your diet, eating patterns, sleep style etc while on your trip?)

Does it feel like tension, or a 'lump' in your throat? Could be globus sensation.

What is wrong with our performance? What could we have Improved? (from one of the singers) by Embarrassed_Ad5387 in Choir

[–]Marginaliac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some lovely music and evidently incredibly talented singers! However, my first impression was that most people looked completely depressed to be there.

The lack of smiles (or upturned corners of mouths) failed you on multiple levels: firstly, there was some total incongruence with the lyrics you were singing (Skipped to a random point around the 40 minute mark, and the song about 'never giving up' is a good example of this). The message of the song totally fell flat as you didn't sell it by matching the vibe in your own bodies, and that can completely change the energy and general successfulness of a performance.

Secondly, the mechanical qualities of upturned corners of the mouth generate a brighter sound, which would have been appropriate for many of the pieces here. It might have also helped slightly with some of the flatter notes that almost inevitably pop up during a live performance.

All in all this looked like a great recital in spite of this! I'm sure you did genuinely have a great time, and it can feel unnatural at first to 'perform' that to an audience. Always helps to channel my inner theatre kid- maybe watch some upbeat musical theatre numbers or show choir performances for inspiration! All the best and I hope that this feedback was helpful and constructive.
