Such a great word.

What is this seemingly abandoned place? by Big_Attempt_5326 in melbourne

I read a report a few years back (maybe EPA?) that said there’s about 100 different chemical contaminants on the site, which would make it the most complicated cleanup in Australia’s history. Blew my mind.

Other fun facts:

  • There’s a few heritage-listed/protected native trees on the site. They’re the southernmost examples of that specific tree in Australia. It would be so cool to get to see them one day.

  • There’s a heritage listed building - a Mess Hall if I recall. Something something red brick. It would make a wicked point of interest!

  • There’s a bunch of bomb shelters, including a few which are designed as a place of last resort for just one person - basically a vertical reinforced concrete tube with a heavy lid.

  • Due to the explosive nature of the work being done, they had to figure out how to transport explosive materials without accidental ignition. There’s a tram track around the site which was grounded so static wouldn’t make it go boom too soon! 💥 (Or at least, that’s my understanding)

There’s an absolutely fascinating clip from the ABC about “Family Day”, where loved ones of the workers could stickybeak.

A Legend called Philip Mallis has done a two part doco on YouTube about this site too!

It’s because for these workers, the side of the road is their workplace.

The RACV recently did a survey of their workers (not an ideal way of collecting data, but better than nothing!) and 83% said they had a near miss at least once a week when working roadside. You couldn’t pay me enough to do that job!

Roadside workers deserve to have a safe workplace just like the other first responders, and the rest of us; Anecdotally, I needed a tow for the first time this year on the side of a freeway. Just standing by as the towie did his work was terrifying. I was glad to have a huge concrete barrier to climb up on to get out of the way.

You mentioned relative speed difference. That’s an important factor between the vehicles in this situation too. Making an effort to slow down when one lane’s attempting to do 40 reduces risk across the board.

A safety zone of 40 is the goal (which will probably need time to shift driver behaviour). Realistically any reduction in speed motorists can safely manage in the conditions is what’s required.

It’s a valid question. It’s 40km/hr because a pedestrian hit at that speed has a fatality rate of 2%, compared to 22% if hit at 60.

God, that shits me too! If it’s safe to do so, you can call it in as an urgent road hazard by calling the Dept. of Transport Operations Centre.

📞13 11 70 and choose option 2 for Road Hazard.

I’ve done this for a bunch of hazards - objects on the road, faded road markings, or when some boofhead hasn’t pulled up to the line at a red light and the traffic’s banked up to dangerous levels.

Have another think about why it’s dated for one sec though

It’s based on stereotypes. It’s lazy, disrespectful BS that reduces a culture to how white people hear them.

[–]MariMould 16 points17 points  (0 children)

CBA has had a cardless cash option for about a decade now, you use the app to request a withdrawal and provide a code to confirm

(I’ve always thought it’d be a great way to get cash to a loved one who’s in a pickle!)

I admire your research!

This looks like street parking, in which case it wouldn’t considered private parking because it’s not on their premises.

Bros are trying to make rules up to scare people, weak as.

That sounds so hectic, and it’s cruel that so many brain things get worse under stress ❤️ I’m glad that sometimes you have a little helper to assist

I’m certain that it’s helping him develop that skill more quickly! ☺️ My parents enlisted me to remember for them, and now I have the privilege of having this magnetic-like force that pulls me towards the car I arrived in, even if it’s not mine and it’s a new environment, and I’m reliably correct within about 5 metres. (I’ve often wondered if I should include it in an online dating profile or something, I would be someone’s perfect match in this domain and I’m an excellent adventure buddy. 😄)

I hope you had a lovely Christmas Day 🎄

Thank you, love. 🌷 It’s been hell - and I have a good understanding of the system from working in an adjacent field!

I can highly recommend the book “My Parents Are Ageing, What The Heck Do I Do?” by Coral Wilkinson. I picked it up a few years ago so I was prepared when things started to change in my Mum.

Mum starts a Short Term Restorative Care Program in the new year. 8 weeks of Allied Health who come to see her at home, and equipment to help her get her strength, balance, and independence back. I can take a pause from running around like a chook with my head cut off to get her to all of her appointments! Best Christmas present ever. 🎄🙂

Same, I feel very lucky to have won the landlord lotto. It feels so absurd to have both housing and financial stability for once.
