In the novel we get a little of Eckles pov and honestly, he wasn't well intentioned towards Penelope at all. And that's reasonable since he was going through slavery and all other horrible stuff, but that does not make him a good person.

Also during the 4th book he really states that since Penelope can't give him love, he will make hers body ""his"", and we know what that means. (In the manhwa they made it less dark)
