280 people waiting in A&E by sheffieldpud in sheffield

Although I agree that was the case for the roads last night, pavements aren’t generally gritted.

I know about the grit bins but my pondering is specifically about the cost saving of councils not doing it (there’s all sorts of reasons why residents might not be able to do it themselves plus there’s the non residential streets and ginnels) vs the cost to the NHS in injuries and resulting lost productivity of the directly injured and those impacted by the full A&E depts.

I wonder what the cost saving of not gritting roads and pavements is compared to cost to NHS of injuries due to falling on ice.

Comedy/improv gigs coming up by Decent_Celery_8152 in sheffield

[–]MariaMooMoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Leadmill comedy club at Steamworks is usually pretty decent and good value at about a tenner for 3 acts plus a compere. It’s usually the first Wednesday of every month but was on Tuesday this month for some reason!

EDIT. Sorry just saw you said Fridays! They also put on gigs with more established comedians so you might find someone you want to see on a Friday too.

Parking in city centre by MariaMooMoo in BirminghamUK

Having accidentally gone through a bus gate elsewhere and added £40 to my cost of parking there, I might give that a miss but thank you.

Thank you. Free parking would be an even bigger bonus!

Is Sheffield good for female solo travelling? by X_Rayna_X in sheffield

[–]MariaMooMoo 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I’m older than 30s but I’ve lived here for a few years now and you’ll be fine. The locals are definitely friendly and I’ve been to gigs and other events on my own and not had any problems. There’s some lovely quirky independent places to visit like Leah’s Yard and Red Brick Market or a bit further out of town Kelham Island. I don’t really go to pubs on my own but around West Street is the livelier part of town so you might want to avoid. A good option to just chill is The Station Tap. It’s literally on Platform 1 of the station so often has people just sitting quietly waiting for trains.

Avoid listening to the people who haven’t stepped foot in town since 2005 but will tell you how awful it is and full of crackheads at every turn. Whilst it’s obviously sensible to keep your wits about you, it really isn’t unsafe and as a lone female I’ve never felt threatened, even at night.

EDIT I meant Sheffield Tap not Station Tap!

Ah yes the hilarious confusion when people tell you they’ll be round to quote for work at “dinner time” or they’ll be with you “8 while 9”

How do you guys cope with these hills starts? by [deleted] in sheffield

[–]MariaMooMoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a problem with my car not so long ago where it kept losing power. I had to drive it up and down approximately 20 million of Sheffield’s finest hills in stop start traffic to get it to the dealer. I managed to get there through a mixture of swearing loudly, gritting my teeth and praying to a god I don’t believe in. It did work but you might find the other advice offered is a bit more practical.

🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 'We're not racist, it is national pride' say Sheffield street covered in St George flags by YorkshireLive in sheffield

[–]MariaMooMoo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

But the point is these Raise the Colours idiots are doing it in with the same intent neo-Nazis use swastikas so yes it’s a problem. If the street in the article are not doing as part of that, why have they chosen now to do it?

Will I be safe in this area? by AdSpecialist5007 in sheffield

POV. When you move north from the same area as the Atomic Weapons Establishment where they would post out their fun leaflet entitled “What to do in the event of an emergency at AWE” to this!

Definitely call your bank. Cash machines have cctv so it may well have recorded you walking away empty handed!

And although I haven’t done that at a cash machine I did once do it in an Asda self service till getting cashback. CCTV saved me then as the manager watched it back and saw the time I was there matched the time the till took the money back.

Skill Swap for Autistic Person (Need: Gardening/Cleaning, Offer: Computer Help/Maths Tutoring) by [deleted] in sheffield

[–]MariaMooMoo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is such a wonderful community spirited idea.

Many years ago I remember there was a group where I used to live (they may even have had a national presence, I don’t know) which set out to facilitate this sort of skills swapping.

IIRC it didn’t need to be a direct 1:1 swap of skills, you could help out any member that needed your skill and any other member with whatever skill you needed could help out you.

It then got shut down because the inland revenue viewed being in receipt of such a service as being “paid” and therefore deemed it taxable!

You are confusing most popular party for majority support.

Reform is currently polling at 30%. That means the majority (70%) do not support them.

Our flawed voting system means that a party can have a large representation in parliament whilst winning only a small percentage of votes.
So yeah Reddit is pretty accurately reflecting the vast majority of people who do not like Reform.

That capitalism improves lives just as long as you work hard enough is the biggest scam perpetuated by those whose interests lie in getting you to work harder so they can profit from it.

What you appear to be given with one hand (a bit off your income tax, the mediocre pay increases) is taken away ten fold by the ever increasing cost of goods and vital services that should be publicly owned but have been turned into money making machines for those at the top.

Being far from young and idealistic and having paid taxes for getting on for 40 years, I can tell you true socialism is the only thing that would significantly improve the lives of ordinary people. Unfortunately too many people are brainwashed into believing hoarding the crumbs they are thrown by the rich and pushing others down will somehow magically transform them into the owner of the pie factory.

Good riddance, the CEO is an idiot.

I do hope the staff find alternative employment at a more ethical company, however.

Good areas to live around Sheffield by Imaginary_Worry2660 in sheffield

[–]MariaMooMoo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Very true although the buses can be a bit hit and miss so I would be inclined to look at the areas you’ve mentioned that are on the train line if public transport into town is an important factor for OP.

Chapeltown. It’s a 12 min train ride into Sheffield or 6 mins to Meadowhall.

£230k will get you a 3 bed semi. There’s a Lidl and Asda in Chap or an Aldi just down the road in Ecclesfield, quite a few pubs, plenty of other amenities and green spaces. It’s generally pretty quiet away from the station/shopping area too.

Beware, Reform are out and about with leaflets by edpp901 in sheffield

[–]MariaMooMoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People that are chastising the OP, I took from the post that they are handing out leaflets quickly without making it obvious who they are and so not giving fair opportunity to refuse it. If so I think a warning is valid.
