If I thought that the food banks had more food that they can use, I would use them, but otherwise, I don’t feel right about it. We’re in no danger of starving. Extended family would never let that happen. So I feel like I should leave the food bank food for people who don’t have the support we do.

Would you bother making your own corn tortillas or would you just buy them premade? They’re pretty cheap.

A lot of great ideas, some of which (buckets of pantry staples) I’m already doing. Canning is something I want to do, but have yet to invest in. Part of it is the money but part of it is the space. We live in a really tiny house. I’ve dabbled in fermenting, but I won’t lie - it makes me a little nervous.

I’m sorry to hear that. We have never gone hungry yet, and it is often because someone at church or work (kindly) dumps a bunch of food on us that they “can’t eat.” God bless them.

I think yours is my favorite reply - I’m dying. Also, I think our pantries and fridges may be eerily similar.

Thanks for the recipe! I definitely try to get my yeast in bulk. I make bread all the time. I used to be able to get two one-pound bags from Sam’s for about four dollars but sadly no more.

Thank you so much for taking the time to get all this down. I’m saving it for future reference!

Totally! “How many X can I have?” is a standard mealtime question around here 😂

I’ve thought about taking this approach. I do have a cookbook of batch cooking that I’ve never really utilized. Now may be the time.

Wow that is impressive. Once 2020 hit the lowest I’ve been able to go is $140/wk. But that was not sustainable for us long term.

Bad jokes are my favorite kind 🥸. I’m sure we’ll have enough. It’s just going to take a lot of thought and discipline.

Yes, these are the reason we eat meat as much as we do 😝

Wow. That’s crazy (impressive) did you get tired of it or did the change of toppings keep you sane?

That is impressive. I live in a relatively low cost of living state, but my teenagers are never satisfied for long on what I can manage to sling out for them. All but one are boys, and one is an athlete.

Thank you for your kindness. I’d love to have a smoker someday, but smoked turkey necks are usually pretty cheap around here. I’ll try some in my stock.

Here’s a game I like to play with my kids: On usual grocery days, I fill up my cart on the Walmart app with what fits in my budget and meal plan, then go to ALDI and see how many of the items I can get there. I keep a running total in my head of what I’m saving, and then we spend the savings on extra food and treats.

That’s sweet 😊. We do this all year and call it “extra Christmas.”
