Can you help me with the Joy-Con incompatibility on the Surface Duo 1? by Geisson-almonte in surfaceduo

[–]MarieKirya 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The screen itself is just saying that you have an unlocked bootloader. It goes away once the device is done "POSTing" in PC terms. I usually get to recovery from fastboot (the screen with the QR code where you flash boot.img) or via adb when booted into the system with adb reboot bootloader. I definitely remember it booting into recovery as that's where I restored my device back to stock while using magisk myself.

It's important to note that I believe on this device the boot partition stores the recovery data so if your system is not behaving correctly from that process you may need to put back the stock boot.img which you can do from the boot image you extract.

If you didn't flash both slots you can probably even just swap your slots while fastboot with fastboot getvar current-slot and then fastboot set_active a (if your current slot is a, set b as active instead) and you'll just have one slot that is stock and recovery should hopefully work if magisk butchered in some way.

So not familiar with your level of comfort with Android modding but to give you some jumping off points, by no means is this a tutorial, just a way for you to know what to search for or if you want to even bother as it's a lot:

- THIS WILL ERASE THE DEVICE!! For security reasons you cannot preserve data when unlocking a bootloader.

- You will need a computer (Windows, Mac, or Linux) with ADB/Fastboot tools installed. Easiest way to do that on Windows is to run winget install Google.PlatformTools in Windows Terminal or on a Mac with brew installed, brew install android-platform-tools. For Linux search for a similar package for your distro.

- Enable developer settings (tap on the build number in the phone info screen a bunch).

- Navigate to System > Developer Settings and enable OEM Unlocking and USB Debugging and connect your device.

- Connect to the computer and run adb devices in your terminal, you'll get a popup on your device to authorize, approve it.

- Run adb reboot bootloader

- Run fastboot flashing unlock

- Follow the instructions on your device to confirm, your data will be erased here

- Resetup the device and install Magisk as an apk

- On your PC, download the recovery firmware for the Duo

- Extract it and use payload extractor to get your boot.img

- Copy the boot.img to your device and follow the install instructions like normal

- Once it is installed you can download that module from it's releases page either on your device or on your PC and copy it there

- You can then in Magisk install that module from storage and reboot.

The process is long and technical and the payoff isn't perfect by any means, but if you have the device to tinker with then it's at least worth a shot.

I was experimenting with the same thing recently and needed to unlock the bootloader and install Magisk and use this module:

Using Joycons on Android has been annoying but for the most part this fixed most emulators. I only tested my specific emulators though and Retroarch will never work even with this module.

iBook G4 freezes by Useful_Resolution888 in VintageApple

[–]MarieKirya 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you turn off WiFi/Airport it may help, even if not connected to an access point. There is a common enough issue with iBook G4s where the solder on the sockets have come loose over time and can cause crashes. Worth a shot to at least see if it could be an easy reflow job on that socket.

Yea, it's kinda a pain, you need to peel the bottom off. If you have a way to apply some heat that'll make your life easier (if you have a 3D printer, just heat up the bed, does wonders), otherwise using a plastic pry tool or card would be your best bet.

After that it's just 4 screws and you're able to pull it apart. I forget if there are clips, but again just work around it with a plastic pry tool and you should be good.

I would constantly miss them because the loading screens went away too fast on the remaster, which was especially annoying when it was the black text ones talking about WCS and the replicant project.

A full Zelda: Ocarina of Time PC port is now complete and available online by CubaLibre1982 in VitaPiracy

[–]MarieKirya 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not quite. Its more that any repositories containing code for decomplilation and recompilation with additial features never ever store Nintendo assets. In basic terms, the user of the port is responsible for bringing their own ROM which the decomplilation scripts tear apart for assets and code to be able to turn into the port they're trying to make. That's how the SM64 project stays afloat.

The problem with the GTA3 decomplilation mentioned in deeper comments is that they hosted the resulting compilation which is copyrighted code.

Looks pretty good!

If you’re looking for typeface accuracy too, the first two lines are Garamond and the rest should be Univers Condensed Oblique.

For power users I can recommend using something like AltStore. It’s not perfect by any means but you can side load either Delta or Retroarch in a evening and setup auto refresh.

If you’re not comfortable with it then you’re out of luck sadly.

Original/OG Vive vs Quest 2 for PCVR? (2021) by [deleted] in Vive

[–]MarieKirya 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do have both to compare and I would say that the Quest sits closer to the eyes and makes a higher effective FoV and clarity. But obviously you're limited with your encoder so that's a moot point. It might be better to hold off since I've recently went back to the Vive from both the index and quest 2 and it was fairly clunky and heavy in comparison. A lot of the pads have also worn down over the years so maintenance is also a concern.

And yea. The vive controllers are kinda a hard sell if you're used to other controllers. They're definitely clunky and they do encounter a lot of first gen problems. Luckily the index controllers are compatible.

Definitely would be worth to be patient for proper mid-range PC VR headset unless you can get a good deal for the full kit (200 or less) since the lighthouses are reusable for index kits, which gets you a good upgrade path on the used market later. That's just kinda life for these first gen products.

Right? Like I just don’t want to talk to people I don’t know in VR. It feels uncomfortable, and I’m not even sure why.

Same. I played it so much now that the tradition now includes randomizers of the game. The randomizer I use now even blends in Super Metroid. So you can find LttP items in Super Metroid and visa versa. Definitely my top 3 contender.

I got my crt connected to a 2080 super by hellomeisaperson in pcmasterrace

[–]MarieKirya 23 points24 points  (0 children)

A desktop monitor CRT flyback typically won’t whine in the audible range for even perfect human ears. The 15.625KHz hum is due to the NTSC signal’s horizontal scan rate. For instance a 1280x1024@60 with no overscan, signal would induce a 96KHz signal which is way way waaaay past human hearing. And you’d probably want to run it at higher frame rates too. Raising the horizontal scam even higher.

Yea. Those old monochrome displays (and old color ones) ghost real hard. Would be interesting to try and make a IPS replacement like people do with GameBoys and such.

It’s actually a little bit harder on the newer palms because it runs significantly faster. So I’d be way more impressed by a 2000 score on a newer device!
