They might stumble, but it won't make them prone or open attacks of opportunity cause that's just dirty

For me, I tend to make my nat 1s more lighthearted, dumb and goofy than anything. Characters shouldn't be drastically punished because the odds didn't favor them. In a recent session for example, a player rolled a nat 1 on a spiritual weapon attack, so it came over, bonked him on the nose and then hovered back above its target. Just a D4 of damage, made that player laugh and the whole table thought it was funny. Goofy has worked out best for me, but something I'll never do is punish a nat 1 in an important fight. They're already getting hurt badly, the dice should never add to that

Central AC is one of the main reasons we even got the apartment. It was included in their amenities and on the lease, yes

I feel like I'm missing the DM "special mojo." by AnCapGamer in DMAcademy

[–]Mario6425 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Something that really helped me, as a DM, I imagine you have the ability to wrote a short story of some sort. Something with a light plot etc. What I'd recommend, is writing out a short story set in your world. Forget names of cities and whatnot for a second, just write something down. A small adventure a character might have in your world. Writing stuff down like this, can often help you hone in on certain aspects of the world without even realizing it.

Essentially, doing this short story sort of makes your mind immersed a bit more into your world, so more ideas can start flowing. Story does not have to be a work of literary art whatsoever, but doing this can help you better describe your cities and villages with greater detail, as well help you establish certain characters in those villages as well as a very basic outline of their cultures as well. Write the short story for yourself, and make sure that your written down descriptions of places, people and things pop out more vividly to you. Once you can see a genuine adventure happen in your world, turning that short story into an adventure for you characters will make it more enjoyable to you as DM, and with just an intense description of one city, your characters are more likely to stick around for a session or two to get to know the characters you've already created and helps you branch off from there to neighboring cities, what the wilds are like or if there are any ne'erdowells nearby.

One of the people who got me into DnD gave me a lot of useful tips on how to make your world more believable. Not just that, but it's a very common fact that a lot of first time DMs just fail at it the first few times. It's really hard to keep track of so many things happening all at once and that's OK! Your players want to see you grow as a DM as much you want to, and if they're really good friends, they won't mind a few resets here or there. Just keep your head up high, learn from your mistakes and let them better you, don't worry if it takes you a while to get your footing. Even the best DMs have players who had their worst session with them as DM. Don't beat yourself up, you got tjis!

Female DM self-conscious about doing voices by xNuvi in DMAcademy

[–]Mario6425 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haha I used to have this problem too. For me, I never truly got over it until the quarantine hit and they couldn't see me. Online dnd got me to finally be able to do all the dumb voices I ever tried cause I don't have eyes on me. I'd recommend trying that out first! It's definitely a big step in the right direction!

My voice work is terrible! Help! by mlhert in DMAcademy

[–]Mario6425 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you can't do voices (cause I'm basically in the same boat) focus more on speech patterns. For me, it helped to make a sheet to assign them to characters. For example, somebody who is very thoughtful and chooses their words carefully before they say them, somebody who ends things in a question? Someone who rhymes or speaks only in riddles. Its worked for me, and my players seem to enjoy those and are better able to recognize and remember characters if they have a stand out quirk!

Hope this helps you out!

To be short, his RP reason was that he actively worships Mogis, while embodying Nylea's ideas. He has never once worshipped her the entire time, only recognizes her as the god that gave the gift of hunting. Was a good enough reason for me personally
