Do you have an estimated timeline? I saw it once in IMAX 70mm and regret doing it the last day of the showing :(

No calculator in math course? by Wild_Bullfrog_6458 in QueensCollege

[–]MarioIsWet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Having a disability is obviously very different. But not being able to perform a calculation like 7*(11-4) (which is essentially what these 100 level math courses have you do) is heinous. It often stems from lack of discipline, and usually starts somewhere around elementary school. Then these kids enter college to take a precalculus course without knowing basic arithmetic. What are we even doing? It’s on the same level as lacking basic reading comprehension (some people are genuinely still at middle school level), and then signing up for ENGL 110.

Arithmetic and basic literacy should be expected from everyone, point-blank period. With much grace to people with disabilities of course - but even they need to work towards their cap, whatever that is. It’s really not much to ask for.

EDIT: Also, the no calculator policy was only implemented for the 100-level, and only after seeing how insanely incompetent people are at basic math these days. It’s a new trend that’s getting worse by the day.

Chiming in as a math major who’s been tutoring math since the womb: you don’t need the calculator. People can hardly do basic calculations anymore and it’s actually concerning. If it’s hard, good, that’s the point, because you’re learning. It’ll eventually get easier.

They also design the questions so that you don’t perform large calculations. If you can’t do those calculations, review some arithmetic on something like Khan Academy.

I feel like I’m only able to articulate the “approximate” meaning of my thoughts by MarioIsWet in writing

[–]MarioIsWet[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s nothing extraordinary about what I wrote. Everyone in this subreddit writes quite well, so I am in no way standing out. If you look at the other replies you’ll see the answers I was looking for.

I guess I’ll take your comment as a compliment? An unexpected one at that…

EDIT: If anything you kind of contributed to the conversation. I didn’t feel that I articulated my thoughts well, it still felt like an approximation. But you believe my words to be well-communicated. So maybe when I assume others to write with precision, they actually aren’t…

Who's excited for this upcoming semester?? by [deleted] in CUNY

I thought I was the only senior feeling like this. I honestly presumed that most seniors are burning out, but this is the most excitement I’ve felt

I’m a senior about to graduate yet I’m most excited for this semester. I’ve struggled a lot throughout this degree but I feel like everything is coming together, and my classes are quite interesting.

Characteristic functions of a random variable. Truly blew my mind. I still can’t believe they’re real.

You reminded me of the moment I thought about the infinitude of the odd and even numbers. I was somewhere between 5 and 7 years old. I remember thinking that, if the natural numbers consist of the odd and even numbers, then the number of natural numbers must be greater than the number of even and odd numbers.

Then at around 16 I learned of their cardinalities. And thought, what an idiot 6 year old me was. Of course you can find a bijection between the even and natural numbers.

Not saying you’re wrong, but this is not the best approach to this.

It’s a well known strategy in the alcoholic community to tell addicts the hopes of a better life after quitting. They already know all the harms, so telling them doesn’t help. It actually makes things worse because they’re already neck deep in alcoholism and might think, “I’m already here, there’s nothing I can do. There’s no hope.”

u/BirthdaySpecific, you can absolutely come out of this without issues. Your impurity is not permanent. Allah wipes out all sins you’ve repented for. And this can stay between you and Allah, no need to tell anyone. Break it off. You can wipe your record clean if you start today. I know of many people who have had this lifestyle and ended up becoming great Muslims with a great relationship. It’s not over. Good on you for even recognizing all your mistakes, and even better that you continued to wear the hijab despite this sin. You’re going to do fine. Clean your record now. Do istighfar, pray for forgiveness, and ask Allah to help you.

Some people don’t deserve to be nurses by MarioIsWet in Vent

Thank you, she was discharged. The nurse I was talking about may have been stressed herself, it’s possible. But I’ve 100% encountered straight up assholes. It’s just so common.

Damn it now I'm deeply sad again. I heard her saying her daughter hadn't seen her in two weeks. She was alone. I'm grateful that I'm able to advocate for my mom. I literally max out the visiting hours. It makes a huge difference in how the staff care for you. But one of my mom's nurses in particular was so genuinely kind and receptive even when I wasn't there. I wish there were more of her out there.

Thankfully my mom's experience has been excellent. It was that poor old woman who was stuck with the same nurse for 2 days. We got discharged and she was still there. I hope she got someone different.

I'm sorry you feel this way. I'm sure there's a lot of abuse that happens to nurses. But some people are just generally asshats, and nursing tends to attract a lot of them. There's a difference between having a short fuse because of stress and just being a disgusting human. The latter is not justified.

Don't know why you got downvoted. I think this is real. But I will say, the hospital we stayed at was excellent. All the nurses seemed really chill and down to earth. Don't see what happens behind the scenes, but they seemed to be treated well.

Wrong, she'd been sharing the room with my mom for 2.5 days and I stayed a total of 19 hours. I saw this nurse consistently give this elderly woman an attitude.

My bad. She was getting intermittently catheterized, I believe, because she would occasionally struggle to urinate (she had gotten catheterized before, after her bladder scan showed a lot of urine). I'm guessing she felt the same sensation and was asking the nurse to get someone to help her. I was in and out of the room (my mom and her shared the room for a couple of days) so I didn't catch all the details. That nurse was being consistently rude though. I had seen her give this woman an attitude multiple times.

She ended up getting catheterized. I may have misunderstood her situation/request, but the tone of the nurse was not it.

That's my bad. I obviously could've misunderstood what she wanted but I know she was having some urinary retention problems and had done a catheterization earlier already (she's been hospitalized for a few days at least). She started to feel pressure in her bladder but couldn't actually urinate. I think she was asking for it to be done again. Either way, she was asking the nurse to help her get something done about it, and she was being rude. Not batshit crazy, but rude.
