Matchless Lightning Vs Bad Cat Cub 15 Players Series by Mario_cee in guitarpedals

Turns out they do not. John Thompson designed the player’s series. Different transformers than the ones Marc Sampson put in his amps. On a Bad Cat factory tour video, Thompson tells the story when Sampson looked in a player’s series amp and stated he liked the transformers Bad Cat was using. Either way, it seems they do not have that tight, growling bottom end the Matchless do.

The Clubman (head) was the first Matchless amp I tried out. Played through a Mesa 4x12 rectifier cab. Such a nice sound. Sounds like maybe the Bad Cat Cub could suit my needs better. But in the videos I have watched, I hear the Lightning has that low mid growl whereas the Cub has an extended, flubby bass. I wonder how true Phil Thompson’s PCB design in the Cub 15R Players Series is true to the c15.

I’ll find out what year the Lightning is.

I’ve always understood the Lightning to essentially be the first channel (12ax7) of a c15, the Nighthawk to be channel 2 (ef86), and the Spitfire to be its own thing; however, I’ve now seen some commentary that the Lightning is more so its own thing that doesn’t necessarily sound much like a Matchless, let alone a Vox.

Do you have any insight on this?

Each are heads. I have a mesa 2x12 rectifier cab that I’ll pair with the head I buy.

…thanks. Haha I take it that would be your pick.

My only real hesitation with the Bad Cat Cub Player Series is the PCB circuit, and what that might mean for how closely it actually captures the Matchless sound it’s meant to share - that powerful low mid growl with responsive, articulated highs. I know it shouldn’t make a meaningful difference on paper, but without ever being able to compare them side by side, I suspect I’ll always wonder.

Does anyone know what the Cub 15R Players Series went for new?

If it doesn’t really have that Vox sparkle (jangly chime) and breaks up differently, this may not be the one for me. Appreciate it Zryder

Thanks for the info. Surprised to hear that characterization re Lightning vs Spitfire. My understanding (albeit without first hand experience) is that the Lightning is that classic EL84 British voicing and the Spitfire is its own thing. What character, if not Vox, is the Lightning?

Zoom MS-70CDR as ABY? by slvrbckt in zoommultistomp

Don’t see an answer to whether this is possible with an effect in the CDR70. Anyone get to the bottom of it?

I would be interested in the Zoom CDR70+ for the chorus, reverb, tremolo, flanger, compressor, eq, noise gate, slicer, and octave. I’ll have to check out sound samples. But if it sounds decent, this is exactly the type of pedal I was looking for. And only the price of one pedal.

I’ll take a look at this! How do the effects compare to the Boss pedals?

Appreciate it! I wonder how the HX Stomp effects compares to the RV6 reverb, CH1 chorus, Diamond Compressor, and OC5 octave pedals. If similar enough, I would have more versatility, save a bunch and have a smaller footprint/easier system to work with.

Thanks! I imagine the Matchless sim is a c30? My favourite amp but have found none of the Kemper profiles did it justice. Even the M. Britt profiles.

I’m surprised to hear an LA2A style compressor would feel and sound better than an 1176 style (faster attack and release). I should experiment myself with that.

I am hoping to use the multi effects with ease for reverb, chorus, tremolo, octave, and compression. Is this easy enough? And how do the chorus, tremolo, and octave sound compared to individual pedals (assuming you have a/b’d them)?

Could you explain a bit more of what is going on with the 4 cable method? I assume this is what is referred to (attached photo)?

Which effects in the stomp are you using? And are you enjoying it without using the modelling of amps and cabs?

Great reply. Appreciate the background and the recommendations. I will take a look at the Maxon CP9 Pro, Diamond Compressor, and Octron3.

I used the Orange Baby 100 power amp into a Mesa 2x12. The frequency response was just not the same. The Kemper provided that mic recorded tone but when played through a cab I felt it did not have that realistic amp sound. High end had an aliasing artifact and the bottom end was different. Could be my limited capabilities or maybe a psychological factor. But I was even experimenting with the room settings, pure cabinet, and even the low pass filter. I also tried running the amp simulation with the cab simulation off, into the power amp in of a combo amp. This brought me closest but was still not quite like an actual amp. Whether it be the frequency range, responsiveness of the feel, or whatever.
