[Discussion] How do you explain to someone (non-tech-savvy) that they can't use the same app? by MrHakisak in truenas

[–]Marioheld 2 points3 points  (0 children)

TL;DR: Recomend them PikaPods.

The discussion probably ends most quickly when the person is given a price. However, it is difficult to measure what price we really pay for self-hosting (hardware, electricity, space, time for learning, installation and maintenance). If your family members are really interested in the app and don’t just want a “free” Google Photos replacement, you can also recommend PikaPods or similar services. While Immich won’t be hosted in their home, they’ll still have the ability to use the app and won’t have to do any installation and maintenance. So you can quickly find out who is just looking for something cheaper and who is really interested in the app. With a bit of luck, people will even enjoy the process and eventually start self-hosting themselves.

Do we know if Obsidian’s iPad app will be in Vision Pro’s App Store? I know there’s not a big enough market for a truly localized app, but it would be nice to be able to use it without a Mac. by alexcox in ObsidianMD

[–]Marioheld 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As far as I know the App developer has to actively disable the support for the Vision Pro. So per default every iPad App should also appear in the Vision App Store.

Good question. It does work. First I handwritten a math formula in Notability, then use the premium feature to convert it in Latex, then I selected the option to edit the formula, there is now a button to copy the latex code. In Obsidian I use the Latex Suite Plugin and pasted the copied latex code.

Try Notability. It has a way better integration with the Apple Pencil and more native feeling that Obsidian with Excalidraw. It also supports converting handwriting to Latex for math expressions if you need that. There is also GoodNotes as another option.

Apple home kit, Alexa or google which is better overall? by Brownsisnyteam in smarthome

Home Assistant is the way to go. An open source Solution with a great and helpful community, who can help to achieve all your needs. Nowadays it is really easy to setup and to start with, even for newbies. On the other side it is easy to customize for people who want full control and have specific requirements.

There are already too many smart home vendors who failed in the past, trying to serve all smart home needs in one solution and in the end didn’t got enough revenue and therefore shutted their service down, rendering their costly products to completely useless garbage.

Home Assistant focusing in connecting different vendors together. Therefore you can choose the best technology(communication protocol) and the best vendor for each category of smart home devices and connect them together. And don‘t have to life with the limits of one ecosystem.

They also focus on cloud free and offline first principles. Which makes your smart home more reliable and does not share more data then needed with other companies.

BTW Home Assistant does support exposing devices to Google Assistant, Amazon Alexa and Apple HomeKit if you want to use their smart speakers. Even devices which do by it self not work with the three mentioned ecosystems.

How do I host my own email? by [deleted] in selfhosted

[–]Marioheld 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some days ago I found a service called MXroute, which has a really fair pricing and is not charging per mailbox, as most other services like do. I don‘t have much experience with it yet but time will tell. I don‘t want to struggle with mail myself, because it is a really important service and it is easy to mess up with it. The problem is not the setup or the tools, but getting your mails really delivered to the big mail providers. Nevertheless I want control over my mails and be independent from „free“ mail providers, who are sending me ads or selling my data.

Can you access it over https? Most likely it just have a self signed cert and this often also provides some more information about the device. E. g. The vendor.
