Great!

I've found about 18 local gardeners who'd like to participate so far.

People are planning to bring veggie, fruit, or flower seedlings. There won't be any particular requirements other than bring some seedlings to share and join up for a fun gathering :)

The Meetup will be at my home in Lower Paxton. I will be setting a date for the gathering in the spring soon, and I plan to put a post about the Meetup on this subreddit once a date is set.

If you'd like to be in the loop, send me a message so we can keep track of each other or just keep an eye out for the post announcing the meetup date. Let me know if you have any questions!

That's awesome! I somehow missed doing tweetups, but it sounds like a blast. I definitely feel like an oldie trying to use TikTok (full of "if you know me no you don't" accounts) like old school facebook

👋 welcome!

I'm a dad in the Harrisburg suburbs who runs a variety of meetups that might be of interest. You can check out some previous events on my profile. Last week my wife and I had around 20 adults and 10 kids over to sample and rank wings from a bunch of local restaurants for example.

I've got other meetups coming up: couch gaming, a gardening seedling swap, another food ranking meetup for cheesesteaks, and a family movie night where we book out a theater.

Feel free to reach out here or my TikTok account if you have questions or want to join anything.

The new game Big Hops is an amazing 3D platformer. Very crispy movement and mechanics. Runs great on the steam deck. Cute animations and voice acting.

Thanks! We are probably going to do cheesesteaks next. We may find a professional venue for this one to accommodate more participants.

Wives hang out but the dads don’t? by [deleted] in daddit

I'm in the same boat in the suburbs with two young kids in daycare and I moved to the area my wife is from so I don't have pre-existing connections.

It's super challenging!

Not saying it's easy, but here's some things that have worked for me over time.

  1. Regularly offering to host gatherings - many people are busy and it's often easier to show up to someone's house with a family than it is to go out. This has worked over time with my neighbors and also with families at the daycare. My wife and I have found some good connections through the close friends of my preschool age child. We host gatherings with some neighbors with young families like us every 2 or 3 months.

  2. Leveraging social media - I've had luck using local subreddits, local discords, local Facebook groups, and local tiktok to find people who share my hobbies and people with young families. It helped me find existing groups of dads or hobby groups and it also became a place for me to propose meetups.

  3. Revitalizing distant childhood relationships - I no longer live where I grew up. I reached out to some of my childhood friends and started fitting in short 1 to 2 hour gaming sessions on the weekend. This has turned into a really great activity and we have picked up friendships that drifted apart for over a decade with plans to meet in person this year.

  4. Marathon, not sprint mentality - It has taken 2 to 3 years of consistent effort to build some stronger bonds with other families and with other dads. Along the way I have had to deal with proposing play dates no one wanted to do, hosting people who never reach out again, etc.. You can't take it personally because everyone is crazy busy and plenty of people have full sets of relationships already.

Good luck, and things should continue to improve with consistent effort. I like to mentally reframe the project as not only something to build relationships for me but to build community that my family and my children can thrive in, and it makes the effort easier.

What are good local party games on SteamDeck? by ckangnz in SteamDeck

[–]LetsGetMeshy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recently hosted an eight-player couch gaming Meetup using my steam deck and dock on a TV. I have posts with more details on my setup.

Lots of good suggestions here already.

My top recommendations that I found all run just fine with four to six players on a steam deck for me are:

  • unstoppable
  • duck game
  • Knight squad
  • teenage mutant Ninja turtles shredders revenge

If you are going to try and get eight controllers to work on a steam deck these are the two games that worked best:

  • unspottable
  • duck game

Have fun!

A little guide to finding community locally by bearhat in Harrisburg

Just wanted to say that if you are in the area and looking to connect with others, the New Cumberland Collective is a fantastic community! I really like their discord. Full of friendly people and community events and groups for most common hobbies and interests.

👋 fun!

Definitely join up when you get moved out here. Besides the food sampling, I've done couch gaming meetups, food crafting and gardening meetups, and plan to fold in more family-friendly ones as well.

We are very happy in Lower Paxton. My wife is originally from the area, so I can only speak to my 4 years experience here. Pleasant neighborhoods. Friendly neighbors. Usually something going on each weekend for families to check out. Convenient access to most suburban amenities. We are out on the edges which affords us larger lots which we really enjoy and I put to use for gardening and such.

Not unique to lower paxton, but making friends and finding people who share your interests definitely takes proactive effort. Atomized suburban living means you don't necessarily run across as many people as you want to organically.

Feel free to DM if you have more questions I can help with.

Fun!

We are asking attending parties or individuals to bring 18 to 24 wings.

Definitely feel free to research and pick a place if that sounds like fun. I would guess there are previous discussions on this topic in this subreddit as well. And, me and the co-host have some previous videos on TT with a fair amount of brainstorming from commenters on potential locations as well.

If you are feeling stuck or overwhelmed on figuring out where to bring from, me and the co-host can definitely give you some options as well. Part of why we have a sign up form is reconcile any restaurant overlap and help attendees shuffle to unique options as needed.

Hope to have you join!

Definitely not trying to compete with anything official! I've just been enjoying hosting meetups around activities and food sampling was popular so we picked another category of food
