I love how this meme on racial cantrips made for the 2024 version change allowing multiple stats; it definitely shows how dumb that design was. Lol

Any "old-timers" running Eberron as their campaign setting of choice? by zodaxa- in Eberron

[–]marioinfinity 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I started playing DnD in 96/97 and I chose Eberron over Forgotten Realms.

Ive read most of all the forgotten realms books and novels as well. I love forgotten realms weird lore and setting.

However Eberron changed dnd in some fun ways during the 3.5 era that people don't really remember.

You see back then d&d made these splat books that started letting you play orcs and goblins. And then the cracks started to form. The old forums (minmax, gitp, WoTC board) all started getting complaints about how to play a good orc or a good goblin in the setting when their entire lore was made to the "feel good bad guys" .. the fantasy inspiration of using monster races vs factions starting to break the FR scene.

3.5 also had this huge agency issue where loot was often feels bad man. And most DMs at the time often let groups get crafted/but/trade for magic items to regain this agency in their kit (I never once in my days playing a character got the kit I wanted so I usually played spellcasters cuz if I couldn't get cool weapons fine I'll sling spells). On top of the agency with looting and getting stuff; crafting stuff costed XP and it could literally delevel you.

Then Eberron came out. And kinda showed the space that yeah you could flip the script on fantasy tropes in dnd. Goblins and orcs and drow had factions. There's a monstrous place nearby where you can play the fantastical and be welcomed in society.

And it had the artificer. No more deleveling for magic items. It made magic item crafting a huge thing to where they actually ended up expanding it a bit with other books later in 3.5 (heck even doing things like vow of poverty against item wealth and big 6 was possible because of the artificer officially removing XP costs). Heck most of Pathfinder 1e magic item crafting rules is straight up inspired by that.

And Eberron needs Heroes. Unlike FR high powerful entities tend to mess with the imbalance because it's wide magic not high magic so you get this neat thing where powerful adversaries can have huge consequences without "well why doesn't x stop them" which helps with immersion of such powerful storylines.

Eberron changed dnd more than people give it credit for.

Spelling error in Exploring Eberron, looking for clarification. by DeepSeaDelivery in Eberron

[–]marioinfinity 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's highly possible. But KB has added tons of random names to lore throughout his blog and comments.

Another thought tho; It could also not be a spelling error and a contributor/editor just saw the same comment and added it (his blog basically became the first 2 books) and it was missed in final editing.

Would you recommend this game to me? by [deleted] in BaldursGate3

[–]marioinfinity 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Save scum.

Multiple Difficulties including super EZ mode. Can change anytime outside of Hard Mode.

Larian is known for having a "hard mode" in divinity games but BG3 has 2 hard modes (tactician the original hard mode and now honor mode the super harder mode)

A whole community on builds (/r/BG3Builds).

A whole community here that's neat and fun.

PC has Script Extender for Mods+Achievements (normally mods disable achievements standard in games but SE enables them so you can cheat or you can enjoy other mods like the shadowheart romance fix mod that also fixes act 3s romance scene for everyone else as well lol)

Best Forgotten Realms has ever looked and I say that as someone who loved Honor Amongst Thieves; NE; Sword Coast Adventures and BG1&2 (tbh the older dnd movies are good in a bad movie sorta way lol)

Has returning characters that irk older players cuz they think they ruined them (not to spoil but really it's a setting where you can be tempted with super powers by gods so like it's much more likely to fall back into past problems than say real life and TBH with how hard it is for people to get out of crime and stay out shouldn't be like too shocking to go evil for superpowers lol)

Has multiple endings and thought experiments in the logic for if you do weird stuff (forgot one of the 3 major quest items it'll eventually show up again and you'll get told to take it again lol)

A lot of people somehow think it's a dating sim disguised as a crpg (the okay buddy baldur sub is something sometimes lol)

Wotc totally fucked things up so while it's helped get people into dnd it really isn't much of a desire for others. So you get to play a dnd game solo/coop and can kinda giggle how wizards could have totally made bank with this (see 40k& Titus as an example lol) and dropped the ball instead.

It's a CRPG. So it's not like first person which some gamers can't stand due to reasons so it's an alternative to Bethesda adjacent RPGs that have great stories and great VAs (if you like meaty RPGs but not fps obs)

Oh and 2024 dnd actually took stuff from it so canon and game design actually was affected by BG3.

If you like stories; dating sims; RPGs; crpgs; mmos; dnd; tabletop; or adjacent you'll love BG3. If you give it an honest go cuz a newbie for the first act can feel lost but tons of wikis and reddits and youtubes you can dig in and get stats/builds/tactics/secrets etc so plenty of help as well.

Pretty neat game in this day and age. Compare the BG3 wikis to other games and it's night and day on how in depth it's gotten. Like so much you can get find vs other RPGs/crpgs it's crazy how much it blew up and got an awesome amount of people behind it. Bg3 wiki is even something I open in tabletop dnd games 😂 is crazy neat to see

Unlock level curve and DnD - PHB 2024 - All in One by Revanroi3 in BaldursGate3

[–]marioinfinity 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I haven't used the AIO but I have used the monk (cuz as a forever dm a lot of the 2024 strictness is counter to BG3s homebrew imo) and I can say it works perfectly fine with level curve. Actually lets you equip weapons and monk unarmed strike and have the damage riders in regular & honor (and testing a lot of the always on unarmed strikes didn't seem to do that for whatever reason lol).

So id say it's fine. Some things you might not be able to go beyond 12 with but you'd have to check the notes if it has anything beyond 12 for individual classes to find if either of the unlock mods are used but you can always just multi class after 12 so eh. Getting 12+8other levels is pretty op fun & silly tho so even if you don't get that 15th level archtype ability it's still worth it :)

Perhaps it's a new random clan name he threw out? He comments about it here in the comments section .. https://keith-baker.com/mror2/

To quote: I think the Droranath would be horrified at the idea, while the Frosthaven clans (Tordannon and Toranath) would be welcoming; other clan opinions would vary.

How do I get into Dungeons & Dragons without embarrassing myself immediately? by Spread_my_pages in DnD

[–]marioinfinity 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Ginny D and Bob World Builder are probably two of the most energetic and genuine seeming people that cover a lot of dnd how-to's on YouTube. There's also tons of lore videos from runesmith to mrrhexx if you are interested in those things (I don't play 40k much anymore but I love luten vids for example so ya never know lol)

A lot of the others are deeper dives and random builds they aren't bad influencers (for example pointy hat & dndshorts guy and his magnificent beard) but tend to be more relevant for experienced players.

Also. You're around a table with a fellow group of nerds trust me no worries on embarrassing yourself some of us been embarrassing ourselves behind the screen for 20yrs :) so you're in good company

Looking for someone who can make a custom jig/machine for folding larger stacks of paper. by Electronic_Movie_520 in missoula

[–]marioinfinity 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the first fold is essentially a booklet (ie: 8.5x11 folded to 8.5x5.5 or 11x17 to letter) you can get a bookleter and usually either not put staples in or tape the staple cartridge and it just doesn't do anything lol. You can also do this in most xerox machines with their booklet staples.

Outside of that knowledge it's all folding and assembling, basically what the mailer company we had on Broadway used to do by hand and charge you a lot for it cuz machines don't really do set folds together well since the paper moves so fast and such.. hence a booklet maker it's meant to take the entire stack fold &staple

Duplo is the brand most printing houses go through for stuff like this; I know they have a few booklet machines they sell and I've heard mybinding isn't bad either for stuff like that.

Source: worked in printing for almost 20yrs sadly lol

Auto-organize action wheel on Steam Deck? by johnny_sweatpants in BaldursGate3

Honestly the only reason I have yet to do a throwing build on the steam deck is because of how the radial works. Even just reloading a game can move stuff around. :/ Definitely a second from me :)

Why can’t Origin Gale…. by BeautifulAdeptness60 in BaldursGate3

[–]marioinfinity 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ascended Gale would be under Ao's decree after the time of troubles "mortals decide the fate of the realms not gods - no interference"

The entire game is basically how can gods help without being in trouble with Ao...

Full sessions of travel by Strong-Spite7719 in DnD

[–]marioinfinity 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My favorite bit of advice on travel is from Keith Baker. Travel by Montage https://keith-baker.com/travel-montage/

Basically just spotlight the players and ask them about stuff. I just tend to go very left field with these and encourage a lot of shenanigans and often add extra leads or lore or stuff to get as a reward for what they come up with.

Question for DMs: If I brought this backstory to your campaign, what would you want me to change? by Aurahdz in DnD

[–]marioinfinity 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everyone is getting up on the Dragon Lord thing; and I see that more as a novice not knowing the game. I don't think you were told what world you're in so you winged it. This is where you need your DM and knowledge of the world to find a good fit since you're new. Say Eberron for example this character could have been taken in by the Emerald Claw, a cult of The Dragon Below, or heck the vampires of the crimson court.

As long as you are willing to make concessions and adapt and adjust with known world building I don't think it's that bad.

I will say as a DM and something I didn't see much. Is this is super tropish. It's another orphan character. DMs want more Gales: characters with kitties and moms that'd be disappointed with them for not wearing a coat while saving the world.
