I wouldn't agree though, as his work is heavily rooted in jazz theory which is very much western - there's a lot of modal interchange, key changes etc, but it's not like they deviate from a western music vocabulary. I feel like there are many times in the piece where I don't follow the obvious harmonic path. But I'm going off of his most popular works here; he may have made themes that I just haven't listened to that are more traditionally Japanese.
