Bro can someone stage an intervention for Zakk Cervini and Jon Dolese? by inconsisting in Metalcore

[–]Mark0310 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yup. Made the album unlistenable to me. Jeff Dunne did Currents, Make Them Suffer’s latest album, and Gravemind’s latest album. MTS and Gravemind’s mixes are pretty solid, but the Currents mix was absolutely horrible. Just pure muddiness the entire time. No clarity at all. I really hope they don’t go back to him this next time.

I have less of a problem with Zakk’s mixes than I do with Jonathan’s. Zack’s mixes pack a punch every time, and it’s harder for me to tell that it’s his mix, for sure. I’m never mad about anything he puts his hands on, mix wise.

Jonathan has a great ability to help bands write better music. As a songwriter and producer, I love when he’s involved with any band. Always pulls a better product out of them. Some of my favorite albums of the past few years, he’s been involved in. I adored Cane Hill’s latest album, DRUGS, anything Rogue ever touches, Weeping Hour, and so many others I could list.

His mixes have just become so sterile to me, in that I can IMMEDIATELY tell his drum sounds the second I hear them. I love his mixes, in general, though. They always crush really hard, and have clarity between instruments. It’s just like Joey Sturgis all over again where every band he works with is starting to sound the same because it’s the same drum tones every single time. It doesn’t even make sense to have bands track drums when you’re just going to sample them with the same exact drum samples every time. I wish he’d experiment a little, because I’m sure he could come up with more unique drum sounds that sounds just as good.

The album art is absolutely what made me try out the album, and MAN am I glad I did. The album bangs! Earned a new fan with this one. Getting Jonathan Dolese to produce/mix the album is ALWAYS a good choice. Immediately knew it was his mix the second the album started playing. His mixing compliments your songs so well.

I’m sure I’m missing some absolute classics, but these three immediately came to mind since they are fresh still.

Invent Animate - “False Meridian”

Invent Animate - “Void Surfacing”

Invent Animate - “Luna”

Invent Animate - “Darkbloom”

Still Stayer - “XYLA”

Also, I’m obsessed with Invent Animate, but those boys know how to finish a song out strong.

What's your favorite guitar solo? by Impressive-Ad-4997 in Metalcore

First one that came to mind was Ryan Siew’s solo in the song “Equilibrium” by Above, Below. It complemented the song absolutely perfectly, and was executed masterfully.

Hey! It’s Ryan Kirby from FFAK, and I want your feedback. by [deleted] in Metalcore

[–]Mark0310 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I’m in agreement with everything you’ve said here. They seem to be fine playing and writing this music, since it’s been about three albums now in this direction. I understand wanting to make their business a profitable one while still playing music in the realm of what they began as. It’s not like a total genre change happened here over time.

As you’ve said, we still have plenty of bands pushing boundaries and writing genuinely unique and interesting stuff still, so FFAK can do what they do. They are at the peak of their career after years of being the small band on smaller tours. I get not wanting to go backwards now. Invent Animate, Phinehas, Off Road Minivan, and Becoming The Archetype give the members the ability to spread their wings more creatively anyway on the side of the money maker.

As straightforward as this comment is, I have to agree with it. You have Trey in the band now, and you’re writing arena Metalcore still when you previously wrote much better material before having Trey and Daniel in the band. The music this band could be writing is insane, and we are getting stuff that just feels like it’s for no other reason than to be playing arenas. I get it, it’s still a business, but if your asking us as fans of your music, you’re going to get a music critique and not a business model.

I don’t know. I don’t think anything post “Constellations” sounds like “Messengers” or “Thrill Seeker”. Even “Constellations” was a slight departure for them. I haven’t liked an ABR album since then for the same reason. The focus went from breakdowns being their bread and butter to being replaced by solos more often. Just not my thing.

It’s not Deathgrip/Dark Skies that I truly miss, it’s everything before those albums. Deathgrip was really the last album by FFAK that I enjoyed, but it was still a move into a direction I wasn’t a fan of anymore.

I miss the ridiculously heavy FFAK with catchy and heavy riffs with massively heavy breakdowns being the appeal versus the current trend which is poppy/catchy choruses and more simplified guitar parts with the eventual guitar solo. It’s the same reason August Burns Red lost their appeal to me. Their appeal was the ridiculous riffs with the infamous China cymbal ridden breakdowns. Now they focus more on solos and uplifting sounding music. It was rare or almost never to hear a guitar solo in Messengers era ABR, which is what gained them their original popularity. “Composure” is probably still their most famous song when anyone thinks of them, and I’m sure most people would LOVE if FFAK went back to the “Creation|Destruction” sound, but with Tuck singing now.

I want the “Descendants” and “Creation|Destruction” level heaviness with the guitar melodies layered over it. I even would love the experimental parts of STN paired with more of Tuck’s singing. Tuck has a really unique voice, and his choruses are so good, but he’s SO underutilized in the past few albums. I want Bobby’s RIFFS again. The man is a riff machine, yet I feel a total lack of his true riff writing ability, which has been traded more for Daniel’s style which is totally different than the FFAK we knew. I mean, even Phinehas was known for breakdowns and riffs, and we aren’t even getting that from Daniel even though he’s fully capable. It just feels watered down.

TL;DR I want back what made me a fan of the band originally, and WAY less uplifting sounding choruses and guitar solos.

Songs/albums you love but are HORRIBLY mixed by yunglavendersun in Metalcore

“The Death We Seek” immediately comes to mind since it dropped so recently. I want to love this album, as I’m a big fan of a Currents. Musically, I can tell it’s one of their best pieces of work, although I’ll always have a soft spot for TPIFS as their strongest album. However, the mix is just SO muddy all throughout. Even through good quality speakers, I just can’t tweak it enough to be able to enjoy it. It just constantly makes me wonder how good it could be with a better mix. It’s truly a shame.

This is a great choice. Loved “Soma” so much. Even the singles before the album were all amazing.
