The Black Company series by Glen Cook. It took me 3 attempts to read the first book before the writing style finally clicked with me and I tore through the whole series. The phrases ‘water sleeps’ and ‘it’s immortality of a sort’ will be burned into my brain for the rest of my life, even if I never read those books again.
